The success of prediction, i.e., whether the next note played in a song is the same as the one predicted by the listener, depends on various factors. In the paper, we present two studies, where we assess how music familiarity and music expertise influence melody prediction in human listeners, and, expressed in appropriate data/algorithmic ways, computational models. To gather data on human listeners, we designed a melody prediction userstudy, where familiarity was controlled by two different music collections, while expertise was assessed by adapting the Music Sophistication Index instrument to Slovenian language. In the second study, we evaluated the melody prediction accuracy of computational melody prediction models. We evaluated two models, the SymCHM and the Implication-Realization model, which differ substantially in how they approach melody prediction. Our results show that both music familiarity and expertise affect the prediction accuracy of human listeners, as well as of computational models.

Two computational models of rhythm and meter are evaluated: The first one explores a relatively new field in Mathematics, namely Combinatorics on Words, specifically Christoffel Words and the Burrows-Wheeler Transform, together with integer partitions. The second model uses filtered Farey Sequences in combination with specific weights that are assigned to inter-onset ratios. This work is assessed within the context of the current state of the art of tempo tracking and computational music transcription. Furthermore, the author discusses various representations of musical rhythm, which lead to the development of a new shorthand notation that will be useful for musicologists and composers. Computational Models of Rhythm and Meter also contains numerous investigations into the timing structures of human rhythm and metre perception carried out within the last decade. Our solution to the transcription problem has been tested using a wide range of musical styles, and in particular using two recordings of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould. The technology is capable of modelling musical rhythm and meter by using Farey Sequences, and by detecting duration classes in a windowed analysis, which also detects the underlying tempo. The outcomes represent human performances of music as accurate as possible within Western score notation.

Book excerpt: Music's isolation from the kinds of survival pressures common in typical natural selection narratives, the social and cultural capital musical preferences confer, and the apparent ubiquity of music across human cultures throughout history make it a potential tool for modeling the structure and development of human society more broadly. Investigating the provenance of musical functionality in both psychological and sociological domains may offer crucial insights into the imperatives common across human cultures. This dissertation aims to start this ambitious project by focusing on the relationship among musical genre, cultural psychology, and computational models of prediction and affect. First, I propose a culture-cognition mediator model of musical functionality, situating music as a crucial link in the mutually constitutive cycle of cultures and selves, and discuss the implications of this model on transdisciplinary music scholarship and the epistemology of musical function. I then discuss experimental and conceptual instantiations of this model in three domains of musical functionality and perception: syncopation, emotion, and genre. These implementations draw on Bayesian probabilistic modeling; theories of affect valuation and mood regulation; and differential topology and computational models of perceptual classification, respectively.

Expanding on the theories of Leonard B. Meyer, the author develops one parsimonious, scaled set of rules modeling implication and realization in all the primary parameters of music. Through an elaborate and original analytic symbology, he shows that a kind of "genetic code" governs the perception and cognition of melody. One is an automatic, "brute" system operating on stylistic primitives from the bottom up. The other constitutes a learned system of schemata impinging on style structures from the top down. The theoretical constants Narmour uses are context-free and, therefore, applicable to all styles of melody. He places considerable emphasis on the listener's cognitive performance (that is, fundamental melodic perception as opposed to acquired musical competence). He concentrates almost exclusively on low-level, note-to-note relations. The result is a highly generalized theory useful in researching all manner of psychological and music-theoretic problems concerned with the analysis and cognition of melody.
