Download or read book A Comparative Study of K 12 Foreign Language Education in American and Chinese Public Schools written by Sha Li and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study aims to provide a more complete picture of how the U.S. and China have developed their foreign language education, particularly in secondary public schools, and how it is structured in each country. An analysis of the foreign language education systems from a historical perspective up until the current foreign language curricula setting situation will be addressed as well in this paper in order to compare and contrast the effective and ineffective aspects of what each country has done and is doing in foreign language education. My study focused on a small sample size of focus group involving three foreign language instructors in public middle schools from China, and three in the U.S. The two research instruments that were used in this study were online surveys and focus group. It is thus hoped that this study may make a contribution to the literature, facilitating both countries' understandings of each other, exploring the problems of both countries, adding new knowledge about the significance of foreign language education, and suggesting the best practices to establish and improve foreign language programs. It is thus also hoped that both country may apply the effective practices and discard the ineffective practices.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A comparative study of the language learning strategies used by students in international schools and local schools Submitted by Mak Kwok Ying Grace For the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics At the University of Hong Kong August, 2005 This is a comparative study of language learning strategies used by international and local school students in Hong Kong. The aims of the study are: 1) to investigate the use of strategies in learning English as a second language in both international and local schools; 2) to explore the relationship between the factors for the students' strategy use and the characteristics of the two school systems. The focus of the study is on the senior form of secondary schools and the subjects are year 12 students in international schools and form six students in local schools. A questionnaire adapted from the Strategies Inventory of Language Learning (SILL Version 7.0 for ESL/EFL learners) was administered, followed by semi-structured interviews with six students from different schools. The frequency of use of overall learning strategies for both groups was similarly within the medium range. Both groups followed a similar pattern in the frequencies of use of learning strategies; they used either compensation strategies (by local school students), or cognitive strategies (by international school students) the most frequently, followed by metacognitive, social, memory and affective strategies being used least frequently. There are no significant differences between these two groups of students' use of the first four categories of strategies: compensation, cognitive, metacognitive and social strategies, but significant differences are shown in the use of memory and affective strategies (local school students used memory and affective strategies to the medium extent, whereas international school students used these strategies at low frequency). In addition, international school students consistently used strategies less frequently than local school students. The similarities of learning strategy use seem to be closely related to some similar features in these two school systems like the need to sit for public examinations and some common content in English lessons. International school students' overall less frequent use of strategies can probably be interpreted as an indication of more effective language learning in international school; some students reported use of fewer strategies when their English proficiency had improved. The significant differences shown in memory and affective strategies between the two groups of students are interpreted in relation with the learning environments and other characteristics of the two school systems. Book Developing Critical Cultural Awareness in Modern Languages

Download or read book Developing Critical Cultural Awareness in Modern Languages written by Elinor Parks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the relationship between language and culture while considering its implications for the teaching of modern foreign languages in higher education. Drawing on a comparative empirical study conducted at universities both in the UK and US, this text problematises the impacts of a separation of language and content in German degree programmes. Illustrating the need for a curriculum which fosters the development of intercultural competence and criticality, Parks reconceptualises established models of criticality (Barnett) and intercultural communicative competence (Byram). The chapters in this volume discuss a range of important topics including; language graduates with deep translingual and transcultural competence, observed differences and similarities between British and American universities and faculty and student voices: developing intercultural competence and criticality. Aimed at scholars with research interests in intercultural communication, language education and applied linguistics, this volume provides a thorough discussion for the ways in which modern language programmes in higher education can be improved. Additionally, those carrying out research in the fields of language teaching and language policy in higher education will find Developing Critical Cultural Awareness in Modern Languages to be of great relevance.

Download or read book The Relationship Between Foreign Language Anxiety and Beliefs about Language Learning written by Najwa Majid Aown and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined and compared the interaction of foreign language anxiety lev el and beliefs about language learning of EFL learners at two universities in Le banon, one using English and one using French as a medium of instruction. A tota l of 233 students enrolled in the Intensive English Course and Communication Ski ll Program at the American University of Beirut where English is the medium of inst ruction and in the Necessary and Sufficient English Program at Saint Joseph Univ ersity where French is the medium of instruction participated in this study. The participants completed the Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory, the Forei gn Language Classroom Anxiety Scale and a background questionnaire. The results ind icated that there were differences in beliefs about language learning between st udents at the two institutions. Also, a stepwise multiple regression revealed th at some belief variables, such as perceived self- efficacy and confidence in lea rning English, the difficulty of learning English, the difficulty of speaking En glish and formal learning of English/ foreign language aptitude contributed sign ificantly to the prediction of foreign language anxiety. Finally, a multivariate analysis of variance showed that certain background variables, namely gender, e xperience abroad, having native English-speaking acquaintances, and expected course grades influenced students' anxiety English-s peaking levels and language learning beliefs. The pedagogical implications of th ese findings were discussed, as were suggestions for future research.
