Book Comparative Studies of the Population Ecology and Life History Patterns of an Alkaline Salt Lake Insect

Download or read book Comparative Studies of the Population Ecology and Life History Patterns of an Alkaline Salt Lake Insect written by David B. Herbst and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasonal abundance and life history traits were compared between populations of the brine fly Ephydra (Hydrokyrus) hians Say (Diptera:Ephydridae), from two western Great Basin alkaline salt lakes. Abert Lake, Oregon, has a relatively low salinity (20-30 g/1 total dissolved solids) and more co-inhabitant benthic species than the higher salinity Mono Lake, California (75-90 g/l). During a period of declining salinities at both lakes, the abundance of this osmoregulating insect decreased at Abert Lake, and increased at Mono Lake. This suggests that abundance may be maximized at intermediate salinities due to biotic limitations imposed by competing and predatory species at dilute salinities, and physiological limitations imposed by osmotic stress at high salinities. Experimental rearing of larvae at high salinities, or reduced algal food supply levels, produced low survival, prolonged development, and smaller size at maturity. When food is not limiting, Mono Lake larvae exhibit greater independence of the inhibitory effects of increased salt concentration compared to larvae from less saline Abert Lake. Selection for enhanced salt tolerance may thus have occurred at Mono Lake, but appears to be limited above 150 g/1 because survival of first instars, and maturation of final instars are impaired at 200 g/l. Besides direct physiological effects, increased salinity also reduces algal growth and may thereby limit food availability to E. hians. Heritable differences in body size exist between populations in addition to environmentally induced changes in growth and size. Abert flies are inherently larger than Mono flies, and develop more rapidly at comparable salinity. Reduction in pupal size severely curtails emergence, and any small-bodied adults that do emerge possess only slight lipid stores, and have a low resistance to starvation. Improvements in algal food supplied to adults increases the proportion of flies reproducing, fecundity, and egg production rates. Reproductive effort has a negative impact on survival only when food is limiting. These results suggest that direct and indirect effects of changing salinity may play an important role in shaping life history patterns and regulating population dynamics of the alkali fly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limnological research on saline lakes is practiced by a growing cadre of scientists active worldwide in a diversity of disciplines. Every three years since 1979, an international symposium on inland saline waters has served to strengthen and expand the scope of the studies. Promising areas for further research especially well suited to saline lakes include the comparative physiology of adaptation to osmotic stresses, the role of microbial and protozoan communities in nutrient dynamics and biotic interactions in ecosystems with few species. The Third International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL). The symposium was sponsored by and received financial or other support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (International Program), United Nations Environment Program, University of California, Santa Barbara, and University of Nairobi. The proceedings occurred for three days (28-31 August, 1985) and were attended by 33 scientists from 14 countries (see list of Participants). On the day prior to the first formal session an afternoon trip to Lake Magadi and salt works was held. The tribulations of this excursion served to acquaint the participants with each other and with the realities of exploring the African bush. A three day post-congress expedition to the rift valley included visits to spectacular saline lakes such as Nakuru and Bogoria. Much of the meeting's and excursion's success is owed to the efforts of the local organizer, Dr. Stephen G.

Download or read book The Mono Basin Ecosystem written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1987-02-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mono Basin is a closed hydrologic basin spanning the border between California and Nevada. Los Angeles has been diverting streams since 1941 that normally would flow into Mono Lake. It has been predicted that continued diversion will have major ecological consequences for the natural resources of the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area. This book studies the ecological risk assessment that considers the effects of water diversions on an inland saline lake. It examines the hydrology of the Mono Basin, investigates the lake's physical and chemical systems, studies the biological relationships, and predicts the effects of changes in lake levels on the ecosystem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Biodiversity is a much underestimated component of global biodiversity, both in its diversity and in its potential to act as models for fundamental research in evolutionary biology and ecosystem studies. Freshwater organisms also reflect quality of water bodies and can thus be used to monitor changes in ecosystem health. The present book comprises a unique collection of primary research papers spanning a wide range of topics in aquatic biodiversity studies, and including a first global assessment of specific diversity of freshwater animals. The book also presents a section on the interaction between scientists and science policy managers. A target opinion paper lists priorities in aquatic biodiversity research for the next decade and several reactions from distinguished scientists discuss the relevance of these items from different points of view: fundamental ecology, taxonomy and systematics, needs of developing countries, present-day biodiversity policy at European and at global scales. It is believed that such a platform for the interaction between science and science policy is an absolute necessity for the efficient use of research budgets in the future.

Book Applications of Conservation Physiology to Wildlife Fitness and Population Health

Download or read book Applications of Conservation Physiology to Wildlife Fitness and Population Health written by Terri J. Maness and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great challenges in ecophysiology is linking physiological measures in wild animal populations with changes in individual fitness. Physiological variables that indicate nutritional state, stress, disease, or injury are used extensively in veterinary practice and captive settings to assess the health and likelihood of reproductive success of many animals. The development and refinement of sampling methods that limit disturbance of animals, coupled with advancements in analytical methods have allowed researchers to begin to examine the relevance of these physiological parameters in wild animals for predicting population trends and response to environmental perturbations. However, despite extensive research in this field, consistent correlations between fitness and/or population health and physiological measures remain rare.

Book A Natural History of Oregon s Lake Abert in the Northwest Great Basin Landscape

Download or read book A Natural History of Oregon s Lake Abert in the Northwest Great Basin Landscape written by Ronald James Larson and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully detailed exploration of flora and fauna. Author Ron Larson offers a natural history of a Great Basin landscape that focuses on the northern region including Lake Abert and Abert Rim, and the adjacent area in southcentral Oregon. Although the jewel of this landscape is a lake, the real story is the many plants and animals—from the very primitive, reddish, bacteria-like archaea that thrive only in its high-salinity waters to the Golden Eagles and ravens that soar above the desert. The untold species in and around the lake are part of an ecosystem shaped by ageless processes from massive lava flows, repeated drought, and blinding snowstorms. It is an environment rich with biotic and physical interconnections going back millions of years. The Great Basin, and in particular the Lake Abert region, is special and needs our attention to ensure it remains that way. We must recognize the importance of water for Great Basin ecosystems and the need to manage it better, and we must acknowledge how rich the Great Basin is in natural history. Salt lakes, wherever they occur, are valuable and provide critically important habitat for migratory water birds, which are unfortunately under threat from upstream water diversions and climate change. Larson’s book will help people understand that the Great Basin is unique and that wise stewardship is necessary to keep it unspoiled. The book is an essential reference source, drawing together a wide range of materials that will appeal to general readers and researchers alike.
