Book excerpt: Comparative Vertebrate Morphology provides a comprehensive discussion of vertebrate morphology. The structure-function concept at the level of organs and organ systems is fundamental to an understanding of comparative evolutionary morphology. It is upon these three interrelated aspects-structure, function, and evolution- that that contents of this volume have been organized and presented. The book opens with a discussion of general concepts on vertebrate evolution. This is followed by separate chapters on vertebrate phylogeny, skeletal components, the cranial and postcranial skeleton, muscula ...

This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Morphology and Biology of the Fungi, Mycetozoa and Bacteria I do not deem ii necessary to say anything in explanation of the reasons which have led to the preparation of this translation of Professor de Bars book on the morphology and biology of Fungi. Mycetozoa and Bacteria. It brings within reach of all English-speaking students the most thorough and comprehensive treatise upon these groups which has appeared in any language; and the picture that is presented of the state of our knowledge of the subject at this time, along willi tiie suggestions and indications of the lines upon which further investigation is especially wanted, will, it is to be Hoped, not only instruct readers, but also stimulate them to research. To render adequately some of the precise terminology has been a serious difüculty in the translation. The terms which have been adopted are consistently used, and the occasional notes, along with the 'Explanation of Terms' which I have added should prevent all misconception of their signification. It must be remembered that tiie definitions and synonymy given at the end of the book have reference 10 terms only as they are used in the text; they are not exhaustive. The extension of the original meaning of Berkeley's term 'sporophore' and its use as the equivalent of the German 'Fruchtträger' is a prominent innovation to which attention may be directed in this place. Several friends have been so kind as to give me their opinion and criticism upon questions of terminology, and I have specially to acknowledge suggestions front Professor Bower, Mr. A. W. Bennett, Dr. S. II. Vines, and Professor Marshall Ward; for help in some difficulties I have to thank the author himself. Book Comparative Vertebrate Morphology

Download or read book Comparative Vertebrate Morphology written by Douglas Webster and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Vertebrate Morphology provides a comprehensive discussion of vertebrate morphology. The structure-function concept at the level of organs and organ systems is fundamental to an understanding of comparative evolutionary morphology. It is upon these three interrelated aspects—structure, function, and evolution— that that contents of this volume have been organized and presented. The book opens with a discussion of general concepts on vertebrate evolution. This is followed by separate chapters on vertebrate phylogeny, skeletal components, the cranial and postcranial skeleton, muscular tissues, muscular system, and development of the integument, nervous tissues, sense organs, nervous system structure, nervous pathways, and endocrines. Subsequent chapters deal with the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory and water balance, and reproductive systems. This book was designed to meet the needs of a one-semester course for students who have already had an introductory course in biology. It is assumed that the lectures will be supplemented by a laboratory with its own laboratory manual. The organization of the text allows the instructor to coordinate the laboratory and lecture portions of the course.

Download or read book Ecological Morphology written by Peter C. Wainwright and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-08-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological morphology examines the relation between an animal's anatomy and physiology—its form and function—and how the animal has evolved in and can inhabit a particular environment. Within the past few years, research in this relatively new area has exploded. Ecological Morphology is a synthesis of major concepts and a demonstration of the ways in which this integrative approach can yield rich and surprising results. Through this interdisciplinary study, scientists have been able to understand, for instance, how bat wing design affects habitat use and bat diet; how the size of a predator affects its ability to capture and eat certain prey; and how certain mosquitoes have evolved physiologically and morphologically to tolerate salt-water habitats. Ecological Morphology also covers the history of the field, the role of the comparative method in studying adaptation, and the use of data from modern organisms for understanding the ecology of fossil communities. This book provides an overview of the achievements and potential of ecological morphology for all biologists and students interested in the way animal design, ecology, and evolution interact.

Download or read book Morphological Integration written by Everett C. Olson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in genetics, development, anatomy, systematics, and morphometrics, the synthesis of ideas and research agenda put forth in the classic Morphological Integration remains remarkably fresh, timely, and relevant. Pioneers in reexamining morphology, Everett Olson and Robert Miller were among the first to explore the concept of the integrated organism in both living and extinct populations. In a new foreword and afterword, biologists Barry Chernoff and Paul Magwene summarize the landmark achievements made by Olson and Miller and bring matters discussed in the book up to date, suggest new methods, and accentuate the importance of continued research in morphological integration. Everett C. Olson was a professor at the University of Chicago and at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was a former president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Robert L. Miller was associate professor of geology at the University of Chicago, associate scientist in marine geology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and a member of the board of editors of the Journal of Geology.

Book excerpt: Homology, the similarity between organisms that is due to common ancestry, is the central concept of all comparative biology. However, the application of this concept varies depending on the data being examined. This volume represents a state-of-the-art treatment of the different applications of this unifying concept. Chapters deal with homology on all levels, from molecules to behavior, and are authored by leading contributors to systematics, natural history, and evolutionary, developmental, and comparative biology. - Commemoration of the 150th anniverary of Sir Richard Owen's seminal paper distinguishing homology from analogy - Contributors who are renowned leaders in compative biology - Coverage that is both comprehensive and interdisciplinary
