Book Comparative Developmental Physiology

Download or read book Comparative Developmental Physiology written by Stephen J. Warburton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative developmental physiology is a growing discipline examining a diversity of organisms as they transform from single cells to mature, reproductive individuals. This collection of original, innovative essays emerged from a Roundtable on Comparative Developmental Physiology held in Glen Rose, Texas in the summer of 2002. This meeting brought together investigators studying the physiology of developing animals in an effort to identify the field's potential contributions to biology. The participants honed in on common emerging themes and future goals, which are reflected in the chapters within. The nascent community of comparative developmental physiologists was challenged to amplify the power of data collection and tool development by focusing on a few select model organisms, while still employing the power of the broader, more traditional comparative approach. Evolution has provided comparative developmental physiologists with remarkable biological diversity, which they have used to investigate a broad range of questions critical for understanding how life works. This goes beyond the basic nuts and bolts of cellular mechanisms to the functional whole, from the mechanistic level to behavior within and between organisms. The union of developmental biology with the breadth of comparative physiology holds much promise for a deeper understanding of evolutionary processes.

Book Atlantic Cod

Download or read book Atlantic Cod written by George A. Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive handbook, covering all aspects of the Atlantic cod including the biology, ecology, life histories, behaviour, commercial exploitation and conservation Not only is Atlantic cod one of the most valuable food fish in the world’s oceans, it is an important component of North Atlantic ecosystems and has been subject to much research into its biology, ecology and exploitation. After hundreds of years of exploitation, overfishing in the last half of the 20th Century caused many stocks to collapse, most famously the Northern cod stock off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Since then, most cod stocks have been better researched and managed, but remain in a variety of states, from fully recovered to continued decline. This book, written by world experts, describes that research and management, and the importance of cod and its fisheries on North Atlantic cultures and economies, with impacts well beyond the range of the species. Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish offers insightful chapter coverage of cod nomenclature, taxonomy, phylogeny and morphology; physiology and ecophysiology; reproduction and spawning behavior; early life history and pre-recruitment processes; migrations, movements and stock identity; feeding, growth and energetics; the place of cod in the ecosystem; the exploitation of cod through history and present day commercial fisheries and precautionary management for sustainable fisheries; impacts of climate change on cod biology and ecology; and the future of the species and its fisheries. Discusses the major commercial importance of Atlantic cod through history Provides a comprehensive treatment of the bio-ecology of the most researched and highly exploited fully marine species Examines how the decline (and recovery) of cod stocks is of great political and scientific interest An essential purchase for marine fisheries scientists Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish is a vital book for all fisheries scientists, managers and fish biologists.

Book Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes 1993

Download or read book Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes 1993 written by Miroslaw Luczynski and published by E. Schweizerbartsche Verlagsbuchhandlung. This book was released on 1995 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coregonid fishes are an interesting and important group of freshwater and anadromous fishes. Coregonids are highly adaptable to diverse environmental conditions and are widely distributed throughout the Holarctic. They support substantial commercial, subsistence, and recreational fisheries. Also, Coregonid fishes are the basis of aquaculture operations in some countries and rearing techniques are important for aquaculture and for sustaining and augmenting natural populations. Coregonids are fascinating subjects for the study of evolutionary and zoogeographic problems. These fishes are also useful in the study of general fish biology and interspecific interactions. This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on the Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes. The objectives of the symposium were to address all aspects of biology, genetics, aquaculture and management of coregonid fishes, throughout their entire geographic range. The conference themes were: biology, life history and population dynamics; genetics and systematics; aquaculture; fisheries and fisheries management and human interventions.
