Book Optimization Under Uncertainty with Applications to Aerospace Engineering

Download or read book Optimization Under Uncertainty with Applications to Aerospace Engineering written by Massimiliano Vasile and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an expanding world with limited resources, optimization and uncertainty quantification have become a necessity when handling complex systems and processes. This book provides the foundational material necessary for those who wish to embark on advanced research at the limits of computability, collecting together lecture material from leading experts across the topics of optimization, uncertainty quantification and aerospace engineering. The aerospace sector in particular has stringent performance requirements on highly complex systems, for which solutions are expected to be optimal and reliable at the same time. The text covers a wide range of techniques and methods, from polynomial chaos expansions for uncertainty quantification to Bayesian and Imprecise Probability theories, and from Markov chains to surrogate models based on Gaussian processes. The book will serve as a valuable tool for practitioners, researchers and PhD students.

Book The Evaluation of High Temperature Materials

Download or read book The Evaluation of High Temperature Materials written by John C. Wurst and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the evaluation of candidate materials systems for high temperature service and is presented in two separate parts: the first pertains to the development of laboratory tests for the evaluation of refractory alloy coatings; the second, to the arc-plasma-jet evaluation of ablative materials, impregnated porous ceramics, refractory composites, and sprayed ceramic coatings. Part I describes analytical and experimental approaches leading to the development of an orderly series of tests designed to characterize the oxidation behavior of refractory alloy coatings and to determine their influence upon the physical and mechanical properties of the base metal. Part II describes the screening of 78 different high temperature materials with an arc-plasma-jet testing facility. The systems evaluated fell into four general categories: ablative materials, impregnated porous ceramics, refractory composites, or sprayed ceramic coatings. Testing procedures were adjusted for each class of materials to emphasize particular performance characteristics. (Author).

Book Investigation of Char Formation and Surface Recession of a Composite Ablation Material with a Silicone resin Base

Download or read book Investigation of Char Formation and Surface Recession of a Composite Ablation Material with a Silicone resin Base written by Allen G. McLain and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A composite ablation material containing a silicone- resin base, silica fibers, and phenolic and silica hollow microspheres has been subjected to a wide range of test conditions to study its charring behavior. The ablation tests were performed at stagnationpoint pressures ranging from 0.016 to 1.3 atm and heating rates ranging from 1.34 MW/m2 to 14.8 MW/m2 in air and nitrogen. The resulting char-layer surfaces fell into three categories - black char, glassy-coated char, and gray char - as heating rates (and char surface temperatures) were increased. The char layers formed contained large percentages by weight of silicon dioxide. Silicon carbide was found to be in chars formed at high heating rates. Empirical correlations of surface recession were determined. For the higher heating rates where steady-state ablation was approached, char-layer constituents and mass loss could be predicted adequately with chemical equilibrium in the reactions at the surface assumed.

Book Flight and Ground test Evaluation of Pyrrone Foams

Download or read book Flight and Ground test Evaluation of Pyrrone Foams written by Allen G. McLain and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Pyrrone materials, pure Pyrrone foam with a density of 481 kg/cu m and hollow glass microsphere-Pyrrone composite with a density of 962 kg/cu m, were tested in the Langley 20-inch hypersonic arc heated tunnel at pressure levels from 0.06 to 0.27 atm and heating rates from 1.14 to 11.4 MW/sq m. The 481-kg/cu m Pyrrone foam was also flight tested as an experiment aboard a Pacemaker test vehicle. The results of the ground tests indicated that the thermal effectiveness of the 481-kg/cu m Pyrrone foam was superior to the 962-kg/cu m glass sphere-Pyrrone composite. The 481-kg/cu m Pyrrone foam had approximately one-half the thermal effectiveness of low density phenolic nylon. The 481-kg/cu m Pyrrone foam experienced random mechanical char removal over the entire range of test conditions. Char thermal property inputs for an ablation computer program were developed from the ground test data of the 481-kg/cu m Pyrrone foam. The computer program using these developed char thermal properties, as well as the measured uncharred material properties, adequately predicted the in-depth temperature histories measured during the Pacemaker flight.
