Download or read book ISS 2 Identity Education and Belonging written by Fethi Mansouri and published by Academic Monographs. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity, Education and Belonging examines the social and educational experiences of Arab and Muslim Australian youth against a wider political backdrop. Arab and Muslim Australian youth have long faced considerable social obstacles in their journey towards full integration, but as the discourse of insecurity surrounding these conflicts intensifies, so too do the difficulties they face in Australian society. Events such as the war in Iraq, Australia's presence in Afghanistan and perceptions of Iran as a nuclear threat—together with domestic events such as the Cronulla riots—place Arabs and Muslims at the centre of global instability and exacerbate feelings of tension and anxiety. At a time when fear and confusion permeate their experiences, Identity, Education and Belonging is an all-important study of the lives of Muslim and Arab youth in Australia.

Download or read book The Martin Presence written by Peter Beilharz and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean Martin was a pioneer of sociology, inventing a version of the discipline that was uniquely suited to Australia in the post-war period. Jean Isobel Martin (1923–79) made herself a sociologist before the discipline was established in Australia. Regarded as a founder of Australian sociology, her writing, teaching and policy helped shape Australia in the period of economic growth and social development that followed World War II. The Martin Presence is a biography that examines her life and her work across the concerns of the time – the needs of country towns, the factory work floor, families and urban structure, poverty and inequality, education and immigration – and explores her far-reaching influence on the social sciences in Australia.

Chapters examine the emergent curriculum, alternative curriculum models, conceptual schemes in curriculum inquiry, and teachers' narratives about curriculum practice in schools. In Part 2: Cultural Dimensions in the Curriculum the authors examine cultural pluralism and multicultural education in the curriculum, and discuss innovative projects for promotion of active citizenship, peace and tolerance in schools. In Part 3: Curriculum Innovations and Teaching the authors evaluate history curriculum reform, Complex Instruction as a curriculum innovation, and the concept of the outcomes in education in Australia. In Part 4: Case Studies the authors, using comparative research methodology evaluate children’s images of picturing teaching, multicultural education in the curriculum and the politics of curriculum reforms. The authors, including Laurie Brady, Margaret Clark, Gustavo Fischman, Sydney Grant, Talmadge Guy, Ian Macpherson, Cynthia Nance, Jacob Perrenet, John Schell, William Schubert, Margaret Secombe, Edmund Short, Jerzy Smolicz, Jan Terwel and Joseph Zajda present a rich tapestry of curriculum theorising and practice in schools in different parts of the world.

Book excerpt: A study assessing the welfare of immigrant and refugee youth in Australia is reported on in this document, which is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes findings and presents recommendations for government action and policy; overall, it was found that the personal, social, educational, and employment needs of the teenage immigrant population are not presently being acknowledged or met. Chapter 2 describes the background of the Ethnic Liaison Officer Working Party No.2, the government-appointed body that prepared the report. Chapter 3 reviews Australian literature on schooling and the adolescent immigrant. The review points to a need for research on the English language, education, and training needs of immigrants and refugees who arrive in Australia as young adults. Chapter 4 provides an overview of educational choices available to the immigrant student, including English as a Second Language and bilingual education programs. Chapter 5 assesses the educational needs of immigrants who are beyond the age of compulsory schooling. Problems of unemployment and acculturation are given special focus. The appendices list the Working Party's terms of reference and membership, and outline the information needs identified by the Working Party. (KH)

Download or read book Culture Motivation and Learning written by Farideh Salili and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of culture on learning and motivation has been the topic of much research in recent years. Educational and psychological researchers are now aware that the findings of their studies may not apply to other cultures, and that in this age of globalization and multiculturalism it is very important to examine the applicability of psychoeducational constructs to other cultures. Understanding learning and motivational characteristics of students of diverse backgrounds will enable educators to develop appropriate curriculum and teaching strategies to motivate these students. The aim of this book is to present research findings and views of scholars and researchers in the field of motivation and learning, from a multicultural and international perspective. Educators and scholars from different parts of the world have examined recent learning and motivation theories in different cultural contexts in order to explore the dynamics of sociocultural processes affecting student motivation. Others have focused on teaching and learning strategies that are known to be effective with culturally diverse students.
