Book Comparative Higher Education

Download or read book Comparative Higher Education written by Philip G. Altbach and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-04-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education is increasingly international. The issues that affect universities in one country are important globally. There are a myriad of links among academic systems worldwide. Comparative Higher Education is the first book to systematically explore many of the most important implications of the globalization of higher education. It explores the links among universities, including foreign students and scholars, the impact of the Western higher education idea on universities throughout the world, and especially the current importance of American academic ideas worldwide, and the patterns of inequality among academic systems. Teachers and students are at the heart of the academic systems. Comparative Higher Education focuses on professors and students-especially the political involvement of both professors and students-and seeks to understand their roles in a comparative framework. The book concludes with a discussion of higher education development in the newly industrializing countries. These Pacific Rim nations are examples of how higher education has been used in the process of development. Comparative Higher Education reflects more than three decades of research in the field, and places key elements in the globalization of higher education in a useful framework. Worldwide examples are used to illustrate analyses of such key topics as international exchange, future trends in university development, the complex relationships among academic systems in the industrialized and developing countries, and related issues.

Book Stratification in Higher Education

Download or read book Stratification in Higher Education written by Yossi Shavit and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-13 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass expansion of higher education is one of the most important social transformations of the second half of the twentieth century. In this book, scholars from 15 countries, representing Western and Eastern Europe, East Asia, Israel, Australia, and the United States, assess the links between this expansion and inequality in the national context. Contrary to most expectations, the authors show that as access to higher education expands, all social classes benefit. Neither greater diversification nor privatization in higher education results in greater inequality. In some cases, especially where the most advantaged already have significant access to higher education, opportunities increase most for persons from disadvantaged origins. Also, during the late twentieth century, opportunities for women increased faster than those for men. Offering a new spin on conventional wisdom, this book shows how all social classes benefit from the expansion of higher education.

Book Application Oriented Higher Education

Download or read book Application Oriented Higher Education written by Ye Zhang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-21 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the higher education system in Germany and China, and analyzes the differences between academic higher education and application-oriented higher education. It explores the past, present, and future of application-oriented higher education in these two countries, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this type of education. Using multiple data collection methods across case studies and student questionnaires, it demonstrates the necessity of a dual track higher education system based on separate entrance test and admission system to tertiary-level education, which ensures that students have transitional options. Further, it highlights the improvement of teaching quality and student satisfaction with application-oriented higher education and concludes that the international perspectives from higher education should be considered as one of the most significant methods of educational strategies.
