Book Comparative Biochemistry V6

Download or read book Comparative Biochemistry V6 written by Marcel Florkin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Biochemistry: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume VI: Cells and Organisms focuses on the complex composition of cells and organisms. The book opens with discussions on the biochemistry of morphogenesis. Bacterial germination and sporulation; seed germination; egg development of sea urchins; sporulation of cellular slime mold; and amphibian differentiation are described. The volume looks at the comparative aspects of metabolic control, biochemical basis of chemical needs, biochemistry of insect metamorphosis, and hormones in invertebrates. The text also highlights the presence of protein hormones in vertebrates. The differences between neurohypophyseal and melanocorticotropic hormones are identified. The book ends with discussions on the comparative biochemistry of digestive mechanisms and detoxication. Digestion in special physiological and systematic groups of vertebrates, carnivorous plants, and invertebrates; detoxication and adoption of terrestrial habitat; and the developmental aspects of detoxication are discussed. The book is a good source of data for readers wanting to explore the complex composition of organisms and cells.

  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-09-24
  • ISBN : 1483262278
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Photophysiology written by Arthur C. Giese and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photophysiology, Volume I: General Principles: Action of Light on Plants focuses on the fundamental mechanisms by which non-ionizing radiations affect the living cell at the molecular level when such analysis is possible. The selection first offers information on the development of photochemistry, including photosynthesis, photoaxis, vision, phototropism, diurnal rhythms and visible light, and medical uses of ultraviolet light. The text then takes a look at the principles of photochemistry and photochemical methods and electron spin resonance and its application to photophysiology. The publication examines the photochemical action of light on macromolecules, absorption spectra, spectrophotometry, and action spectra, and photochemical reactions of photosynthesis. Discussions focus on photosynthetic phosphorylation, measurement and interpretation of action spectra, instrumentation for absorption spectra, and inactivation of viruses by visible and ultraviolet light. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers interested in photophysiology.

Book Derivative Spectrophotometry and PAM Fluorescence in Comparative Biochemistry

Download or read book Derivative Spectrophotometry and PAM Fluorescence in Comparative Biochemistry written by Vladimir S. Saakov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents various examples of how advanced fluorescence and spectroscopic analytical methods can be used in combination with computer data processing to address different biochemical questions. The main focus is on evolutionary biochemistry and the description of biochemical and metabolic issues; specifically, the use of pulse amplitude modulated fluorescence (PAM) for the functional analysis of the cellular state, as well as results obtained by means of the derivative spectroscopy method characterizing structural reorganization of a cell under the influence of external factors, are discussed. The topics presented here will be of interest to biologists, geneticists, biophysicists and biochemists, as well as experts in analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and radio chemistry and radio activation studies with protonen and alpha-particles. It also offers a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in biological, physical and chemical disciplines whose work involves derivative spectrophotometry and PAM-fluorescence.

Book Biochemistry and Physiology of Protozoa

Download or read book Biochemistry and Physiology of Protozoa written by M Levendowsky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry and Physiology of Protozoa, Second Edition, Volume 1 is organized into 13 chapters, beginning with a discussion on fine structure and phytogeny of phytoflagellates. This book discusses the structural features of protozoan cytochromes. Subsequent chapters explain sterol and carotenoid distributions in various groups, phycobiliproteins in cryptomonads, halotolerance in Dunaliella, physiology of coccolithophorids, the ameboflagellates, and bioluminescence of phytoflagellates. This edition also describes the most severe and best known of the toxins, saxitoxin, produced by species of Gonyaulax. Lastly, the physiological ecology of red tide flagellates is explained.

Book The Science of Photobiology

  • Author : K. C. Smith
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 1468417134
  • Pages : 431 pages

Download or read book The Science of Photobiology written by K. C. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are several excellent books covering a few of the specialized areas of photobiology, at the present time there is no book that covers all areas of the science of photobiology. This book attempts to fill this void. The science of photobiology is currently divided into 14 subspecialty areas by the American Society for Photobiology. The first 14 chapters of this book deal with those subspecialty areas, each written by a leader in the field. Chapter 15, entitled "New Topics in Photobiology," highlights areas of research that may be desig nated sUbspecialties of photobiology in the future. This book has been written as a textbook to introduce the science of photobiology to advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The chapters are written to provide a broad overview of each topic. They are designed to contain the amount of information that might be presented in a one-to two-hour general lecture. The references are not meant to be exhaustive, but key refer ences are included to give students an entry into the literature. Frequently a more recent reference that reviews the literature will be cited rather than the first paper by the author making the original discovery. Whenever practical, a classroom demonstration or simple laboratory exercise has been provided to exemplify one or more major points in a chapter.

Book The Significance of Zoochromes

Download or read book The Significance of Zoochromes written by A.E. Needham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title indicates, the theme of this book is the functions of biochromes in animals. Recent works on zoochromes, such as those of D. L. Fox (1953), H. M. Fox and VEVERS (1960) and VUILLAUME (1969), have been concerned primarily with the chemical nature and the taxonomic distribution of these materials, and although function has been considered where relevant this has not been the centre of interest and certainly not the basis for the arrangement of the subject matter. Functional significance is a profitable focus of interest, since it is the one theme which can make biochromatology a discrete and integral subject, and because it is the main interest in all biological fields. At present chromatology seems to be a particularly schizoid subject since it is clear that in metabolic functions biochromes are acting in a chemical capacity whereas integumental pigments function mainly biophysically, in neurological and behavioural contexts. It is profitable to attempt an integration by studying the functions of as many chromes as possible, from all aspects.
