Book excerpt: Voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) are key components in frequency synthesizers for Radio Frequency (RF) wireless communications. The design of monolithic VCOs with standard CMOS processes has been the object of several recent research projects. The common goal of these attempts has been to investigate the possibility of meeting the very demanding VCO phase noise specifications without making use of bipolar processes or external components. Two categories of VCOs are studied in this thesis, one involving an inductor, and the other is inductor free, which is a ring oscillator. The study of the phase noise performance of complementary LC VCO shows that most of the phase noises come from the tail current. A modification has been made based on this topology, where the tail transistor is removed. However this brings another problem: higher power consumption. To overcome this problem, sub-threshold techniques have been used leading to sub-threshold LC VCO. A Ring oscillator is designed at the end because of its wide tuning range and ease of implementation. Schematic simulations, layout and post-layout simulations are accomplished using TSMC 0.18 um CMOS technology. The performances of the three types of VCOs are compared regarding the oscillating frequency, phase noise and tuning range. All of these can be used in the Bluetooth applications. In addition, the figure of merit (FOM) of the designed VCOs is compared with work by other researchers.

Book excerpt: Design of High-Performance CMOS Voltage-Controlled Oscillators presents a phase noise modeling framework for CMOS ring oscillators. The analysis considers both linear and nonlinear operation. It indicates that fast rail-to-rail switching has to be achieved to minimize phase noise. Additionally, in conventional design the flicker noise in the bias circuit can potentially dominate the phase noise at low offset frequencies. Therefore, for narrow bandwidth PLLs, noise up conversion for the bias circuits should be minimized. We define the effective Q factor (Qeff) for ring oscillators and predict its increase for CMOS processes with smaller feature sizes. Our phase noise analysis is validated via simulation and measurement results. The digital switching noise coupled through the power supply and substrate is usually the dominant source of clock jitter. Improving the supply and substrate noise immunity of a PLL is a challenging job in hostile environments such as a microprocessor chip where millions of digital gates are present.

Book excerpt: Active Inductors are useful in reducing the large chip area typically consumed by spiral inductors, as well as providing larger inductance values and higher quality factors that otherwise cannot be achieved by spiral inductors. Integrated inductors find application in many radio frequency (RF) front end integrated circuits, including impedance matching, filtering, biasing and in oscillator circuits. Nonetheless, because of the interdependent relationship of the self-resonant frequency and quality factor it is often difficult to meet desired circuit requirements. Additionally, active devices pose problems of higher power consumption, noise figure and potential instability. This thesis begins with the study of active inductors, the Wu active inductor in particular, and considers tuning methods based on the Wu active inductor topology. Starting with the small-signal model, the emulated inductance and quality factor expressions are derived. Next, the operation of active inductors under large-signal is closely examined. Comparisons between a passive and an active VCO are made. The active inductor based voltage-controlled oscillator (Active VCO) is studied extensively, and the methods of improving the performance under large signal-behavior are discussed. Then a design procedure based on gm/ID methodology is proposed. A Matlab script that can be applied to gyrator-C based active inductors is developed to determine the sizing of the transistors for a desired inductance and resonant frequency. Cadence Virtuoso is used for simulations, and extraction based on an IBM 8RF technology file. Finally, a low power active VCO is designed, simulated and laid out.

Design examples for multi-standard 802.111a/b/g as well as for GSM/WCDMA are fully described and experimental results from 0.18 micron CMOS test chips have demonstrated the validity of the proposed design and optimization techniques. Equally important the work describes techniques for robust high volume production of RF radios in general and for integrated PLL/VCO design in particular including issues such as supply sensitivity, ground bounce and calibration mechanisms. CMOS PLLS and VCOs for 4G Wireless will be of interest to graduate students in electrical and computer engineering, design managers and RFIC designers in wireless semiconductor companies.
