Book Advanced Aerosol Characterization Using Sun sky Photometer and Multi wavelength Mie Raman Lidar Measurements

Download or read book Advanced Aerosol Characterization Using Sun sky Photometer and Multi wavelength Mie Raman Lidar Measurements written by Qiaoyun Hu and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two objectives in this study : (i) aerosols characterization using multi-wavelength Mie-Raman lidar and (ii) the retrieval of aerosol properties through lidar and sun/sky photometer joint measurements. The measurements investigated were recorded in two observation sites : Lille (France) and M'bour, (Senegal). The measurements in M'bour were conducted in the SHADOW2 (Study of SaHAran Dust Over West Africa) campaign, in the framework of Labex CaPPA. Aerosol characterization presented in this study concerns Saharan dust in M'Bour, long-range transported dust and Canadian smoke, as well as dust-smoke mixtures. In the second part of this study, lidar volume linear depolarization ratio has been included in the aerosol retrieval algorithm GARRLiC/GRASP. Sensitivity tests are performed to test the performance of GARRLiC/GRASP under different aerosol content, with different sphere fraction and with different error levels of molecular depolarization ratio and calibration coefficient. Then GARRLiC/GRASP is applied to real sun/sky photometer and lidar measurements and the retrievals are compared with results from independent methods for verification. The comparison shows that GARRLiC/GRASP retrievals are very consistent with the results from independent methods, but tend to produce 10% lower dust particle depolarization ratio compared to the lidar measurements. Over all, our results are relevant to the European scientific community since GARRLiC/GRASP is being implemented in the ACTRIS data and service center. This work will benefit to the evaluation of future European space missions.

Book Aerosols Properties as Retrieved from the GARRLIC Synergetic Approach Applied to Multi Wavelength Raman LiDAR Observations Performed Over Lille and Dakar Sites

Download or read book Aerosols Properties as Retrieved from the GARRLIC Synergetic Approach Applied to Multi Wavelength Raman LiDAR Observations Performed Over Lille and Dakar Sites written by Valentyn Bovchaliuk and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerosol particles are a highly variable component of the atmosphere and are now studied by a wide community. Since 2005, LOA is developing a recognized expertize in LiDAR observation devoted to aerosols profiling. Since 2011 this activity is supported by ACTRIS (Aerosol Cloud and Trace gas Infrastructure) and CaPPA (Chemical And Physical Processes in the Atmosphere) projects. The first objective of this work was to built, set up and characterize a new multi-wavelength Raman Polarized LiDAR (LILAS) operating at LOA observation platform located on the Campus. This system has also been operated during the SHADOW-2 field campaign (2015-2016) at Dakar (IRD station, Senegal). The second objective of the thesis consisted in developing aerosols retrievals and analyzing aerosols retrievals in term of optical and microphysical properties. An innovating synergetic approach (GARRLIC/GRASP) has been used and improved to interpret several aerosol events (local pollution, mineral dust transported to Lille and mineral dust detected at Dakar, close to sources). This new technique is combining primary data obtained from sun/sky photometer (spectral AOD and spectral radiance) and elastic LiDAR backscattering profiles (355, 532 and 1064 nm). Ambient aerosols properties being also sensitive to the atmospheric humidity, a last part of the work has be devoted to profiling water vapor mixing ratio from LILAS night time data.

Book Advances in Atmospheric Remote Sensing with Lidar

Download or read book Advances in Atmospheric Remote Sensing with Lidar written by Albert Ansmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lidar or laser radar, the depth-resolved remote measurement of atmospheric parameters with optical means, has become an important tool in the field of atmospheric and environmental remote sensing. In this volume the latest progress in the development of Lidar methods, experiments, and applications is described. The content is based on selected and thoroughly refereed papers presented at the 18th International Laser Radar Conference, Berlin, 22 - 26 July 1996. The book is divided into six parts which cover the topics of tropospheric aerosols and clouds, Lidar in space, wind, water vapor, troposheric trace gases and plumes, and stratospheric and mesospheric profiling. As a supplement to fundamental LIDAR textbooks this volume may serve as a guide through the blossoming field of modern Lidar techniques.

Book Copahue Volcano

  • Author : Franco Tassi
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-09-21
  • ISBN : 3662480050
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Copahue Volcano written by Franco Tassi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-21 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of the volcanological, petrological and geochemical features of the Copahue volcano, located at the border between Argentina and Chile. Scientific studies are limited for this volcanic system, due to its remote location and difficult access in winter. However, Copahue is one of the most active volcanic systems in the southern Andes. Monitoring the volcano's activity is of utter importance, as it provides means of existence for the nearby village of the same name, hosting the world's highest-located hot-springs resort. This book's aim is to present the current monitoring activities, and to describe future research programs that are planned in order to mitigate volcanic hazards. Special attention is therefore devoted to the social and industrial activities close to the volcano, such as health therapies and geothermal energy exploitation. In a special section, the Copahue volcano is presented as a terrestrial modern analog for early-Earth and Mars environments.

Book Fiber Optics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fedor Mitschke
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-08-16
  • ISBN : 3662527642
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Fiber Optics written by Fedor Mitschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells you all you want to know about optical fibers: Their structure, their light-guiding mechanism, their material and manufacture, their use. It began with telephone, then came telefax and email. Today we use search engines, music downloads and internet videos, all of which require shuffling of bits and bytes by the zillions. The key to all this is the conduit: the line which is designed to carry massive amounts of data at breakneck speed. In their data carrying capacity optical fiber lines beat all other technologies (copper cable, microwave beacons, satellite links) hands down, at least in the long haul; wireless devices rely on fibers, too. Several effects tend to degrade the signal as it travels down the fiber: they are spelled out in detail. Nonlinear processes are given due consideration for a twofold reason: On the one hand they are fundamentally different from the more familiar processes in electrical cable. On the other hand, they form the basis of particularly interesting and innovative applications, provided they are understood well enough. A case in point is the use of so-called solitons, i.e. special pulses of light which have the wonderful property of being able to heal after perturbation. The book will take you from the physical basics of ray and beam optics, explain fiber structure and the functions of optical elements, and bring you to the forefront of both applications and research. The state of the art of high speed data transmission is described, and the use of fiber optic sensors in metrology is treated. The book is written in a pedagogical style so that students of both physics and electrical engineering, as well as technicians and engineers involved in optical technologies, will benefit. The new edition is largely updated and has new sections on nonlinear phenomena in fibers as well as on the latest trends in applications.
