Book The Danish Industrial Foundations

Download or read book The Danish Industrial Foundations written by Steen Thomsen and published by Djoef Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial foundations are foundations that own companies. Typically, they combine charitable and business goals. Some global companies such as IKEA, Robert Bosch or the Tata Group are foundation-owned, but nowhere are they as numerous as in Denmark. Three of the four largest Danish companies - the pharma company Novo Nordisk, the shipping company A.P. Moller-Maersk, and the Carlsberg brewery - are all foundation-owned. Surprisingly, very little has been written about what industrial foundations are, and how they operate. The Danish Industrial Foundations provides a comprehensive overview. The book covers aspects such as theory, law, taxation, economic importance, company performance, governance and philanthropy. The book is the result of a large collaborative research project, led by the author, on industrial foundations. [Subject: Business, Economics, Industrial Foundations]

Book August and Marie Krogh

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2013-05-27
  • ISBN : 1461475309
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book August and Marie Krogh written by Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August Krogh, the son of a brewer, studied zoology in Copenhagen and earned his doctoral degree under the physiologist Christian Bohr, the father of the world-renowned nuclear physicist Niels Bohr. Krogh's unusual ability to construct instruments and complex apparatuses and his intuitive understanding of physical principles made it possible for him to improve on Bohr's methods. His findings led him to challenge Christian Bohr's ideas about oxygen secretion, and when Bohr refused to accept his findings, Krogh unwillingly came into a painful conflict with his own mentor. Krogh's continued studies of how oxygen is supplied to the tissues led to his realization that the blood flow in the finest blood vessels, the capillaries, has to be regulated through a mechanism that opens and closes the capillaries according to the tissue's need for oxygen. This idea and his scientific proof were at the time so new and revolutionary that he was promptly (in 1920) awarded the Nobel Prize. His fame in Denmark and all over the world continued to grow until his death in 1949. His scientific discoveries extended from respiration, exercise physiology and capillary physiology into comparative osmoregulation, isotope studies, active transport of ions in plants and animals, and finally insect flight. Another dramatic story of Krogh's life began when he introduced insulin production in Denmark in 1922. This move saved his own wife's life as well as numerous other lives and helped make Denmark's Novo-Nordisk the largest producer of insulin in the world today. Krogh's wife, Marie, became a physician and a renowned scientist in her own right. Throughout their harmonious marriage and partnership, Marie played an important role in her husband's life both scientifically and personally. Written by the proud daughter of August and Marie Krogh, this biography is based on numerous letters, scientific papers, interviews, symposia, and other sources as well as the author's own knowledge of her parents. The intertwining of the scientific work and personal lives of these two remarkable people is beautifully illustrated in a well-rounded picture of their struggles and triumphs. It is a unique book, full of human warmth and scientific understanding.

How should firms handle cultural and institutional differences between markets? This textbook provides students with the core research in international business and strategy, including organization, efficiency, external relationships and the challenges found in an increasingly multicultural world. Each part begins with a presentation of the issues and controversies faced in that particular area, followed by a synthesis of the research which provides avenues for future research. Compiled by two of the World's leading scholars of international business, and supplemented with critical commentaries and a range of integrative case studies, this comprehensive textbook provides advanced students of international business and strategy with a resource that will be invaluable in their studies and beyond.

Book The Corporation in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book The Corporation in the Twenty First Century written by John Kay and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND SCHRODERS BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024 "Original and thought-provoking... A brilliantly erudite account of the major waves in the theory and practice of management" - The Financial Times "The doyen of British thinkers on the evolution of business...One of the great attractions of his [work] is that he stands above and apart from conventional political attitudes" - Literary Review For generations, we have defined a corporation as a business run by a capitalist elite, that uses its accumulated wealth to own the means of production and exercise economic power. That is no longer the reality. In the twenty-first century, our most desired goods and services aren't stacked in warehouses or on container ships: they appear on your screen, fit in your pocket or occupy your head. But even as we consume more than ever before, big business faces a crisis of legitimacy. The pharmaceutical industry creates life-saving vaccines but has lost the trust of the public. The widening pay gap between executives and employees is destabilising our societies. Facebook and Google have more customers than any companies in history but are widely reviled. John Kay, one of the greatest economists of our time, describes how the pursuit of shareholder value has destroyed some of the leading companies of the twentieth century. Incisive and provocative, this book redefines successful commercial activity and leadership, the knowledge economy and what the future of the modern corporation might be.
