Book Impact of Asphalt Thickness on Pavement Quality

Download or read book Impact of Asphalt Thickness on Pavement Quality written by Rebecca S. McDaniel and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 537: Impact of Asphalt Thickness on Pavement Quality documents transportation agency policy for lift thickness and minimum compaction requirements on resultant asphalt pavement quality. To achieve expected pavement performance, it is important that asphalt concrete (AC) have adequate density. A critical factor in achieving this density is the ratio of lift thickness to nominal maximum aggregate size (t/NMAS). The information in the report is designed to help make agencies aware of a range of practices other agencies use to achieve a desired t/NMAS ratio, ensuring that density of AC is adequate to meet expected pavement performance.

Book Compaction of Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Compaction of Asphalt Pavement written by Charles S. Hughes and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1989 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to construction and materials engineers, paving contractors, equipment manufacturers, and others who are involved in assessing the performance of asphalt pavements. Information is presented on various issues related to compaction of asphalt pavements. Compaction is one of the most important factors affecting the performance of asphalt pavements. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the theory, methods, equipment, and specifications related to the compaction of asphalt pavements. A brief history of, the importance of, and factors affecting compaction are also discussed. Construction influences, density measurements, and trends are also considered.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Thick lift Paving with Tamper Bar Pavers

Download or read book Thick lift Paving with Tamper Bar Pavers written by Bryan T. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research studied thick-lift asphalt concrete construction using a tamper bar paver. Tamper bar pavers were deployed on three paving projects to place asphalt layers ranging from 6 to 10 inches thick. On each project, test sections were constructed in one and two lifts, evaluating different lift thicknesses, paver screed settings, and rolling patterns. The research team monitored the mat cooldown time; measured mat density throughout compaction; tested the mat after construction with a rolling density meter, 3D Radar, and an inertial roughness profiler; and sampled 172 cores for laboratory testing of air voids and air void uniformity. The cooldown time of the mat increased by 0.7 hours per additional inch of thickness. Overall mat compaction was acceptable for all test sections. Additional roller passes had the biggest effect on air voids but with diminishing returns. Construction in two lifts produced higher air voids because the bond interface itself had high air voids. Thicker lifts, when compared to the mixture nominal maximum aggregate size, increased the air voids. Thicker lifts also increased vertical segregation, but a single thick lift was still more uniform than two lifts of the same total thickness. The effect of the tamper bar screed itself was not significant, though there were several confounding variables interfering with the analysis. Pavement roughness was expected to increase when placed in a single lift, but the analysis was inconclusive. Guidelines for thick-lift paving were developed. They provide scenarios for when thick-lift paving is appropriate and give recommendations for paving equipment, compaction practices, concerns about opening to traffic, and managing ride quality.
