The glass powder is mixed with a foaming agent and placed in a kiln where the foaming agent produces gas bubbles that become trapped in the melted glass as the mixture leaves the kiln and hardens. The resulting material has a porous structure with isolated and/or interconnected cells. The cellular structure of the foam glass makes it able to carry substantial stresses while being very lightweight. The foam glass sheets from the kiln can be broken into sand- and gravel-size particles, called herein foam glass gravel (FGG). Several trial field tests have used FGG as pavement subbase to decrease the pressure on soft subgrade and insulate and improve roadways over permafrost soils, and as lightweight fill to remediate slope failures and reduce lateral earth pressure behind retaining structures. The aim of this testing program was to build on previous research performed with FGG at New Mexico State University and study the shear strength and laboratory compaction properties of soil-FGG mixtures. This research studied three FGG gradations, two sandy soils, and several soil-FGG mixtures. The FGG was tested for gradation, intraparticle porosity, water absorption and desorption, maximum and minimum bulk densities, and shear strength. The soil samples were tested for gradation and shear strength. Soil-FGG mixtures at different ratios were prepared so that the unit weight of the conventional soil was decreased while maintaining a granular soil matrix around the FGG particles. Modified Proctor compaction tests on the soils and soil-FGG mixtures were done to determine compaction characteristics. A direct shear test was performed on the soil and soil-FGG material to determine the effect of FGG on the shear strength of the soil. The results showed that FGG has shear strength comparable to dense and medium-dense granular soil. The soil-FGG mixtures in the ratios considered reduced the unit weight of soil 2 to 3 kN/m3, and the shear strength results suggested that the strength of the composite material was influenced by the FGG but still displayed the stress-deformation behavior of a granular soil.
