Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1955 John D. W. Watts presented the faculty lectures at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschlikon. Amos and prophetic studies have not been the same since. Three years later, in 1958, Vision and Prophecy in Amos appeared as an instant must in studies on Amos and on biblical prophecy in general. Watts' form-critical analysis of the visions of Amos became an immediate classic in its field. Long out of print, this new edition of Vision and Prophecy is available for all students and scholars of biblical prophecy. Moreover, Watts has added new material on Amos. He explores Amos forty years later both in terms of its literary whole and in the context of the Book of the Twelve.

Book El Octavo Or culo del Profeta Am s

Download or read book El Octavo Or culo del Profeta Am s written by Ponguta Silvestre and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Coming from a remote area of Judah, and from a farming background, Amos was called to a prophetic ministry to the nation of Israel. His prophetic message was a blend of mercy and judgment, as he challenged an erring nation to seek the Lord. In addition to strong condemnation of errant Israel, Amos also held out the -promise of restored fortunes, and particularly of the continuing place and significance of the Davidic family. Allan Harman's commentary is a careful exposition of the text. While using the ESV translation, he gives particular attention to the Hebrew, discussing words that are most significant for the translation and -interpretation of this eighth-century BC covenantal messenger. He also includes sections of application, that preachers will find particularly helpful. The author has spent a lifetime in teaching the Old Testament, and brings his skills to another biblical book. This commentary complements his other commentaries on Exodus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Isaiah, Joel, and Daniel, all of which have been aimed at making plain the significance of the text, without unnecessary reference to other writers.

Chapter Three shows how the words of Amos were reactualized and composed in their seventh century setting. This book also serves as a useful resource for understanding pre-exilic prophecy because of the many similarities between Amos's message and other prophetic traditions which Coote highlights.

Book The Prophet Amos Speaks to America

Download or read book The Prophet Amos Speaks to America written by Bruce G. Epperly and published by Energion Publications. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophet Amos is known for fiery messages directed at the elites of the northern kingdom of Israel in ancient times. Can this prophet also speak to us in America today? This book looks at the message that Amos proclaimed and applies it to parallel situations in modern America. Issues such as the worship of wealth (greed), privilege, and elites living off the labor of others are more similar in these two times and places than one might initially assume. How can we respond as people of faith to the evils of our own time? Are we responsible to notice and take action? Is taking such action part of our faith? If we listen to the prophet Amos, the answer is a resounding “yes.” God cares about the weak, the oppressed, and the downtrodden, and looks to those with the means to help implement change. We are truly asked to take responsibility for the well-being of our neighbor. Christians would be especially challenged by this book and the message of the prophet Amos, because so much of that message was also proclaimed by Jesus, who based judgment on how one treated the least, rather than those who are great. With study and thought questions with each chapter, and an abundance of suggestions for practical action, this book is a great tool to use in a church-wide study combined with a call to action.

Someone who seems to have it all together with the perfect clothes, the perfect kids, and the perfect marriage? But what's behind that perfect facade? Who are you on the inside? We may look like we have it all together, when, in reality, we're rotting away like the bones inside a beautifully decorated tomb. God sent Amos to give the people of Israel a message of judgment and destruction. They looked like they had it all together, but their focus was on the pleasures of this world. In this Bible study, the reader will work through the words of Amos as he pleads with the people of Israel to replace their decaying foundation with one that is living, fresh, and whole. Amos's words will resonate with 21st-century readers who encounter the same challenges in new forms. Are you tired of acting like you have it all together when inside you're falling apart? Join author Kristi Burchfiel as she guides you through a study on how to experience abundant life and drive outThe Decay Within. 'The examples are great and speak right to what point Kristi's trying to get across. It's very thorough.' -Derrick Henslee, Tulsa Campus Pastor, LifeChurch.tv

Book The Eighth Century Prophets Amos Hosea Isaiah Micah

Download or read book The Eighth Century Prophets Amos Hosea Isaiah Micah written by Bernhard W. Anderson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernhard Anderson has written a commentary that gives new perspective and clarity to the prophetic tradition and demonstrates the timely nature of the prophets' messages for today. 'The Eighth Century Prophets' treats the four Old Testament figures as a 'prophetic quartet' that produced a powerful and startling consensus about Israel's relationship to God and the world. The core of the prophetic message is shown to be both religious and political as Anderson describes and explains the great themes of Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, and Micah: divine judgment, the present and the future, justice and mercy, the covenant, walking humbly with God, and waiting for God. Included is a bibliography and time chart of Eighth Century Israel.

Book Explanations for Exile in Amos

Download or read book Explanations for Exile in Amos written by Martha Campos and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In four places, Amos announces Israel's coming exile to Assyria: 4.1-3, 5.25-27, 6.1-14 and 7.7-17. It will be Yahweh's punishment for social injustice. But who is to blame? Most scholars think it is the women (and men) of the mid-eighth-century bce Israelite upper class. Not so, says Campos. It is the kings who are the culprits. Kings should champion social justice, as we know from ancient Near Eastern texts and biblical books like Jeremiah, and the endurance of the kingship depends on their upholding justice. Kings must also remain loyal Yahwists, and keep clear of alliances with foreign powers. Israel's kings have failed on all counts. In this forensic overturning of time-honoured readings of Amos's oracles, and with a fresh eye for his metaphors, Martha Campos outs the successors of Jeroboam (7.9) as the cows of Bashan (4.1), manufacturers of images for non-Yahwistic worship, especially of Ninurta/Sakkuth (5.26), lounging on couches at their banquets (6.4). And Amos himself is a tin wall (7.8), strong enough to fend off the arrows of his opponents. Explanations for Exile will be a breath of fresh air for scholars and students of the prophet Amos.
