Book Community Participation in Solid Waste Management

Download or read book Community Participation in Solid Waste Management written by Sonwabo Mazinyo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management in high density low-income areas is a problem that manifests itself in ubiquitous illegal dumpsites and unhealthy living environmental conditions. Community participation in solid waste management in C-Section in Duncan Village a township in South Africa, has been found to be part of the solution to this problem. This study investigates community participation in SWM at household level, community waste project level and at informal salvaging/scavenging level. The integration of community participation into existing municipal waste management plans and the nature of the relationship between different interest groups are investigated. The nature of the relationships between stakeholders is fraught with conflicts. The study suggests that this conflict is due to a lack of communication, and should be addressed and that integrated participation of all stakeholders must be encouraged for effective solid waste management in high density low-income communities.Recommendations from this study should be useful for municipal managers and town planners struggling with solid waste management in a third world urban context.

Book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India

Download or read book Improving Municipal Solid Waste Management in India written by P U Asnani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a matter of great concern in the urban areas of developing countries. The municipal authorities who are responsible for managing municipal solid waste are unable to discharge their obligations effectively because they lack the in-house capacity to handle the complexities of the process. It is heartening to see that the World Bank has prepared this book covering all important aspects of municipal SWM in great depth. The book covers very lucidly the present scenario of SWM in urban areas, the system deficiencies that exist, and the steps that need to be taken to correct SWM practices in compliance with Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 ratified by the Government of India. The book shares examples of best practices adopted in various parts of the country and abroad, and very appropriately covers the institutional, financial, social, and legal aspects of solid waste management, which are essential for sustainability of the system. It provides a good insight on how to involve the community, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to help improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the service, and shows how contracting mechanisms can be used to involve the private sector in SWM services. This book will be a very useful tool for city managers and various stakeholders who deal with municipal solid waste management in the design and execution of appropriate and cost-effective systems.

Book South African Urban Change Three Decades After Apartheid

Download or read book South African Urban Change Three Decades After Apartheid written by Anthony Lemon and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of South African urban change over the past three decades. It draws on a seminal text, Homes Apart, and revisits conclusions drawn in that collection that marked the final phases of urban apartheid. It highlights changes in demography, social as well as economic structure and their differential spatial expression across a range of urban sites in South Africa. The evidence presented in this book points to a very complex set of narratives in urban South Africa and one that cannot be reduced to a singular statement so the conclusions of the various investigations are in many ways open. As urban apartheid represented one clear outcome, its post-apartheid urban legacies varies greatly from city to city. As such this book is a great resource to students and academics focused on urban change in South African cities since the demise of apartheid, and scholars of urban policy-making in South Africa and Southern urbanists generally.
