Book excerpt: Lady Health Workers (LHWs) are community health workers who work under the Pakistani government's National Programme for Family Planning and Primary Health Care, and provide basic medication, contraceptives, and nutrition and prenatal advice to expectant mothers. LHWs are a pivotal bridge between mothers, especially those who live in traditional households, and medical practitioners and policymakers. Several studies indicate that LHWs have been instrumental in decreasing maternal and infant mortality rates, lowering the incidence of tuberculosis in urban and rural populations, and treating depression among patients. In addition, they conduct vaccination campaigns including the WHO-supervised polio campaign. Since 2007 tensions have emerged between LHWs and the government regarding pay and working conditions. The LHWs have staged sit-ins, demonstrations as well as a march to the capital to highlight their plight and demand better working conditions from the government. This has resulted in disruptions in vaccination and awareness campaigns. Reports suggest that a higher morale amongst workers translates to higher productivity and more effective work results. Thus, understanding the issues affecting LHWs is essential to a more productive health care work force. By analyzing the dynamics underpinning the relationship between LHWs, the Pakistani government, and the community, policymakers can obtain a better understanding of how the intersecting influences of gender, culture and spaces impact the implementation of health care policies. This analysis could also shed light on the issue of worker retention in the medical field. Drawing from a series of semi-structured interviews conducted over a four-month period in the Pakistani city of Karachi, I analyse how LHWs view their work in relation to gender, agency, self-worth and human security in an urban setting. In addition, I locate the workers' experiences within neocolonial and postcolonial systems. Findings indicate that while LHWs are extremely devoted to their work, a lack of security, compounded by irregular pay and gender discrimination, has contributed to low morale. The masculine and hierarchal systems LHWs operate within have contributed to the workers' struggle to be recognised professionally. In addition, international development organisations' agendas and government policies have had unintended and often negative consequences on LHWs' morale and experiences.

Its overall objective being to improve health sector results in concerned countries, it aims at building country capacities (and strengthening country processes) for the development, negotiation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of robust and comprehensive NHPSPs with a view on promoting UHC; health in all policies; and people-centered primary care -as indeed, investments in quality primary health care (PHC) will be the cornerstone for achieving UHC around the world. The purpose of this publication is to document accomplishments of the UHC-P in 2022 for the 125 partner countries. The annual UHC-P report serves as a single report to all nine donors supporting the Partnership. It will provide a synthesis of activities and results achieved in all the participating countries; present a range of country examples related to the major areas of work; and also elaborate on how the UHC-P achieved sustainable buy-in of partners and stakeholders at the country level in the different countries concerned.

The field surveys enable the effective construction of a sophisticated hybrid value chain by connecting a sustainable business ecosystem of local value chains with global value chains. Joint social business entities formed between local NGOs and foreign companies, multinational corporations with global value chains, among others, appear to be the keystones. In Part I, the case of Grameen Euglena in Bangladesh and that of Sari-Sari stores leveraging micro-financing in the Philippines, along with other interesting cases, are analyzed as effective social business models. Analysis also shows that the IT service industry in emerging countries helps to enlarge formal sectors so as to absorb younger generations into informal sectors. The e-health service business in Bangladesh and the business process outsourcing (BPO) IT service industry in the Philippines are examined in each part of the book. Part II, particularly, shows that IT and the digital technology-based service industry can lead to a new industrial development path in these countries instead of the conventional one based on manufacturing. In other words, digital technology-based service industries, as formal sectors, can absorb working people from informal sectors. As a result, poverty issues which form a key issue in SDGS will be alleviated. This book is highly recommended not only to academicians but also to businesspeople who seek an in-depth and up-to-date overview of new sustainable and inclusive businesses in the age of SDGs.

This had wide-ranging representation which included WHO Deputy Director-General, Executive leadership from USAID, IANPHI and WFPHA. The overarching aim was to examine this topic together and identify actionable steps to build an integrated approach to health system strengthening that brings together health security, humanitarian, disease-specific and life-course-specific programmes. The specific objectives of the meeting were to: facilitate strategic discussions on prevailing practices in health systems resilience for health protection and high-quality health services, to determine actionable next steps for global guidance; inform policy options for WHO, USAID and partners to maximize joint country support for health systems resilience; and identify immediate priorities for next steps following the meeting. To inform and support the proceedings of this meeting, complementary desk reviews were conducted to synthesise evidence, and inform the discussions and way forward. Together, this package consists of (i) a technical meeting report and (ii) two complementary desk reviews.
