Book Understanding the Social Economy

Download or read book Understanding the Social Economy written by Jack Quarter and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for courses addressing community economic development, non-profit organizations, co-operatives and the social economy more broadly, the second edition of Understanding the Social Economy expands on the authors’ ground-breaking examination of organizations founded on a social mission – social enterprises, non-profits, co-operatives, credit unions, and community development organizations. While the role of the private and public sectors are very much in the public light, the social economy is often taken for granted. However, try to imagine a society without the many forms of organizations that form the social economy: social service organizations, arts and recreation organizations, ethno-cultural associations, social clubs, self-help groups, universities and colleges, hospitals and other healthcare providers, foundations, housing co-operatives, or credit unions. Not only do these organizations provide valuable services, but they employ many people, and purchase goods and services. They are both social and economic entities. Understanding the Social Economy illustrates how organizations in the social economy interact with the other sectors of the economy and highlights the important social infrastructure that these organizations create. The second edition contains six new case studies as well three new chapters addressing leadership and strategic management, and human resources management. A much-needed work on an important but neglected facet of organizational studies, Understanding the Social Economy continues to be an invaluable resource for the classroom and for participants working in the social sector.

Book Concepts of community in Community Economic Development

Download or read book Concepts of community in Community Economic Development written by Sara Paige Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Economic Development (CED) is an alternative form of development that assesses the social and economic needs of a community and engages community members in the creation of locally relevant development initiatives. Many communities in Winnipeg's North End are pursuing CED initiatives to address the problems of poverty, unemployment and violence. Although the concept of "community" evokes images of unity and cooperation, communities are composed of diverse individuals, groups and agendas. CED organizations must understand the unique forms of community belonging in their target communities. This understanding will increase awareness of the factors that influence exclusion and inclusion in communities and their impacts on community development. In this thesis I explore the meanings of "community" to North End community members and CED organization staff, and the ways in which CED organizations and community members negotiate these diverse concepts of "community" to imagine and implement constructive, communal and sustainable development initiatives.

Download or read book In a Voice of Their Own Urban Aboriginal Community Development written by and published by Canadian Centre Policy Alternatives. This book was released on 2006 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper focuses on urban Aboriginal community development. We draw upon the experiences of 26 Aboriginal people who have been and are active in various forms of community development in Winnipeg's inner city. The study shows how Aboriginal people have been constructed as the 'other' in Canadian society. The process of colonization caused great damage to Aboriginal people. Over and over the 26 Aboriginal people with whom we spoke referred to the process of colonization as being at the root of Aboriginal people's problems. In many cases their personal testimonies were painful and moving.

Book Community Economic Development CED and Social Enterprise in a Western Canadian City

Download or read book Community Economic Development CED and Social Enterprise in a Western Canadian City written by Shivani Sajwan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are Community Economic Development (CED) principles helping to improve the economic sustainability of Winnipeg's North End? This core question guides my research. The main objective is to study how CED principles have been incorporated in a program, to examine how they have been implemented, and how the program contributed to neighbourhood economic stability. In Winnipeg's North End, residents have experienced poor quality housing, low educational attainment, high unemployment rates and visible poverty. This has contributed to the deterioration of the neighbourhood. To help revitalize these neighbourhoods, local organizations are using CED principles in their programs; they focus on addressing the physical, social and economic gaps, and the challenges many residents face. Inner-City Renovations is one social enterprise applying CED principles to improve the economic stability by utilizing the available local resources. This paper aims to identify how CED principles are contributing to the economic sustainability of Winnipeg's North End.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of Aboriginal street gangs such as Indian Posse, Manitoba Warriors, and Native Syndicate, Winnipeg garnered a reputation as the “gang capital of Canada.” Yet beyond the stereotypes of outsiders, little is known about these street gangs and the factors and conditions that have produced them. “Indians Wear Red” locates Aboriginal street gangs in the context of the racialized poverty that has become entrenched in the colonized space of Winnipeg’s North End. Drawing upon extensive interviews with Aboriginal street gang members as well as with Aboriginal women and elders, the authors develop an understanding from “inside” the inner city and through the voices of Aboriginal people – especially street gang members themselves. While economic restructuring and neo-liberal state responses can account for the global proliferation of street gangs, the authors argue that colonialism is a crucial factor in the Canadian context, particularly in western Canadian urban centres. Young Aboriginal people have resisted their social and economic exclusion by acting collectively as “Indians.” But just as colonialism is destructive, so too are street gang activities, including the illegal trade in drugs. Solutions lie not in “quick fixes” or “getting tough on crime” but in decolonization: re-connecting Aboriginal people with their cultures and building communities in which they can safely live and work.

Download or read book Solving Poverty written by Jim Silver and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-30T00:00:00Z with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty in Canada’s inner cities is deep, complex, racialized and often intergenerational. In this collection of essays published over the past decade, Jim Silver argues that urban poverty today includes not only low incomes, but in all too many cases also poor housing, poor health, low educational achievement, high levels of neighbourhood violence, racism, colonialism and social exclusion. As a result many poor people experience low levels of self-esteem and self-confidence and may blame themselves, which is reinforced by the dominant blame-the-victim discourse about poverty. Silver argues that today’s urban poverty is qualitatively different than the urban poverty of forty years ago, and that there are no quick, easy or one-dimensional solutions. In Solving Poverty, Jim Silver, a veteran scholar actively engaged in anti-poverty efforts in Winnipeg’s inner city for decades, offers an on-the-ground analysis of this form of poverty. Silver focuses particularly on the urban Aboriginal experience, and describes a variety of creative and effective urban Aboriginal community development initiatives, as well as other anti-poverty initiatives that have been successful in Winnipeg’s inner city. In the concluding chapter Silver offers a comprehensive, pan-Canadian strategy to dramatically reduce the incidence of urban poverty in Canada.
