Book excerpt: This historical exploration of the Green Book offers “a fascinating [and] sweeping story of black travel within Jim Crow America across four decades” (The New York Times Book Review). Published from 1936 to 1966, the Green Book was hailed as the “black travel guide to America.” At that time, it was very dangerous and difficult for African-Americans to travel because they couldn’t eat, sleep, or buy gas at most white-owned businesses. The Green Book listed hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and other businesses that were safe for black travelers. It was a resourceful and innovative solution to a horrific problem. It took courage to be listed in the Green Book, and Overground Railroad celebrates the stories of those who put their names in the book and stood up against segregation. Author Candacy A. Taylor shows the history of the Green Book, how we arrived at our present historical moment, and how far we still have to go when it comes to race relations in America. A New York Times Notable Book of 2020

Book The Little Black Book of Data and Democracy

Download or read book The Little Black Book of Data and Democracy written by Kyle Taylor and published by Byline Books. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much data does Facebook really have on me? What is a cookie on the Internet? Is my Amazon Alexa listening to me? Why can’t I seem to stop scrolling endlessly down my Instagram feed? Did social media really help cause an attempted coup in the United States? How did we go from short, 140-character tweets to attempted coups in less than two decades? How much data does Facebook really have on me? Is my Amazon Alexa listening to me? The Little Black Book of Data and Democracy demystifies these seemingly complex topics to help you understand how our very way of life is under threat and what you can do about it before it’s too late. Powered by your personal data, social media has transformed our way of life, from how we get information, meet people and create increasingly siloed communities. This has had a profound impact on democratic society. Our shared reality – the way we collectively understand the world – has rapidly been replaced by conflicting micro-realities that are often fueled by conspiracy theories, lies and “fake news.” This has been driven by a business model that supposedly gives us everything for free. All we have to do is give up our personal data and privacy. If you aren’t paying for the product, then you are the product.

Book The Convergence of Race Ethnicity and Gender

Download or read book The Convergence of Race Ethnicity and Gender written by Tracy Robinson-Wood and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students, beginning and seasoned mental health professionals will be better prepared for diversity practice by this accessible, timely, provocative, and critical work, The Convergence of Race, Ethnicity and Gender: Multiple Identities in Counseling, Fifth Edition. Author Tracy Robinson-Wood demonstrates, through both the time honored tradition of storytelling and clinically-focused case studies, the process of patient and therapist transformation. This insightful, practical resource offers behavioral health professionals a nuanced view of diversity beyond race, culture, and ethnicity to include and interrogate intersectionality among race, culture, gender, sexuality, age, class, nationality, religion, and disability. With a keen focus on quality patient care, this important text aims to help professionals better serve patients across sources of diversity. Readers will recognize their roles and responsibilities as social justice agents of change, while identifying the ways in which dominant cultural beliefs and values furnish and perpetuate clients’ feelings of stuckness and inadequacy, in both the therapeutic alliance and within the larger society. This remarkable text reveres the lifelong commitment of using knowledge and skills as power for good to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Download or read book Taylor s Power Law written by R.A.J. Taylor and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taylor's Power Law: Order and Pattern in Nature is a broad synthesis of this ubiquitous property of natural and man-made phenomena. This stimulating and approachable work surveys the biological and non-biological empirical data, describes the statistical uses of Taylor's power law (TPL) and its relationship to statistical distributions, exposes the mathematical connections to other power laws, covers the competing explanatory models; and develops an argument for TPL's genesis. Taylor's power law relates the variability of a process or population to its average value. It was first described in relation to insect populations and then more broadly to other animal and plant populations. Subsequently it has been recognized in microbiology, genetics, economics, astronomy, physics, and computer science, and it is thought to be one of the few general laws in ecology where it is routinely used to describe the spatial and temporal distributions of populations. Biologists who know the law as Taylor's power law and physical scientists who know it as fluctuation scaling will be interested in the bigger picture on this fascinating subject. As the relationship between variance and mean is found in so wide a range of disciplines, it seems possible it is a deep property of number, not just a phenomenon in ecology as was thought originally. Although theories abound that purport to explain or predict TPL, none is entirely satisfactory either because it fails to be very predictive, or it does not account for all the available empirical data. To uncover such a property requires a synthesis across disciplines, an acute need that is approached by this exciting work. - Provides a single reference describing the properties, scope, and limitations of Taylor's power law - Reports the empirical, analytical, and theoretical work without opinion and ends with a critique of the work in order to develop a synthesis - Collects together thoughts and suggestions of the hundreds who have written and speculated about Taylor's power law in order to review examples (and counter-examples), as well as examine the various models developed to account for it

Book Feminist Community Research

Download or read book Feminist Community Research written by Gillian Creese and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist community research is a collaborative methodology that holds the promise of building a more just society. But in the absence of critical analysis and responsible use of power, the approach can lead to naive or harmful practices. This interdisciplinary volume acknowledges the challenges that researchers can encounter, and discusses strategies that have been employed to overcome them. By sharing collective wisdom gained from research among diverse groups -- from immigrant and Aboriginal women in Vancouver to poverty-reduction practitioners in Vietnam -- this book will help researchers and government agencies build better bridges between research institutions and communities.
