This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook on Global Community Corrections assesses and analyzes the status of community corrections systems around the world, highlighting inter-regional and intra-regional variations in their design, implementation, and impact on policy and practice. Covering both probation and parole, this handbook brings together leading international experts to examine the myriad of systems developed under the broad heading of community corrections to manage community corrections populations at the pre-adjudication, adjudication, and post-release stages. Chapters are designed to consider the following questions: How many offenders are placed in community corrections systems around the globe? What are the key design features of these community corrections systems? What do we know about the effectiveness of community corrections within and across global regions? This is an essential reference text for all those engaged with community corrections, probation, and post-release policy in criminal justice.
Download or read book Corrections in the Community written by Edward J. Latessa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrections in the Community, Seventh Edition, examines the current state of community corrections and proposes an evidence-based approach to making programs more effective. As the U.S. prison and jail systems continue to struggle, options like probation, parole, alternative sentencing, and both residential and non-residential programs in the community continue to grow in importance. This text provides a solid foundation and includes the most salient information available on the broad and dynamic subject of community corrections. Authors Latessa and Lovins organize and evaluate the latest data on the assessment of offender risk/need/responsivity and successful methods that continue to improve community supervision and its effects on different types of clients, from those with mental illness or substance abuse problems to juveniles. This book provides students with a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of community corrections and prepares them to evaluate and strengthen these crucial programs. This seventh edition includes new chapters on pretrial, and graduated responses as well as updated information on specialty drug and other problem-solving courts. Now found in every state, these specialty courts represent a way to deal with some of the most devastating problems that face our population, be it substance abuse or re-entry to the community from prison. Chapters contain key terms, boxed material, review questions, and recommended readings, and a glossary is provided to clarify important concepts. The instructor’s guide is expanded, offering sample syllabi for semester, quarter, and online classes; student exercises; and research and information links. A test bank and lecture slides are also available at no cost.

Book excerpt: Documented evidence suggests that community safety is best achieved through policies promoting human services rather than relying totally on prisons and that promoting intervention in an individual's own environment (known as 'ecological integrity') is closely associated with effective intervention. This is the first book to focus on the transfer of knowledge of worldwide effective offender rehabilitation programs. Prominent researchers and practitioners in the criminal justice field have contributed their extensive knowledge of what it takes to implement effective correctional practices with ecological integrity. * Reviews "real world" challenges of program effectiveness and survival * Offers effective, evidence based, innovative alternatives to imprisonment of offenders * Offers a common multi-level systems perspective as a framework for the international case studies featured * The first book to focus on the transfer of knowledge and best practice through the concept of "technology transfer"

Download or read book Addiction Recovery and Resilience written by Townsand Price-Spratlen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an era of substance misuse colliding with public health shortcomings. Consequences of mass incarceration and other racial disparities of the "drug war" are felt acutely in the neighborhoods and communities least equipped to deal with them. More than 600,000 people are released from US prisons each year; nearly two-thirds of returning citizens have a substance use disorder (SUD) and have limited access to treatment. Even among the general public, only one in ten people with SUD receive any type of specialty treatment. Community organizations make important contributions to improve access and help to heal these societal fractures. Using a social ecology of resilience model, Addiction Recovery and Resilience is a yearslong ethnographic case study of a faith-based health organization with a focus on long-term recovery. It explores the organization's triumphs and missteps as it has worked to respond to the opioid crisis and improve the health of affiliates and the neighborhood for nearly twenty years. Addiction Recovery and Resilience concludes with best practices for individual, organizational, and community health and public policy at a time when nontraditional health care providers are increasingly important.
Download or read book Crime in Texas written by Ken Anderson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas criminal justice system has come a long way since the early 1990s, when a vicious crime spree by paroled murderer Kenneth McDuff convinced lawmakers and citizens that the system had broken down. In this book, District Attorney Ken Anderson describes major reforms that followed the McDuff case as he provides a complete overview of the criminal justice system in Texas. Using simple language that any citizen can understand, Anderson describes all aspects of the system--officials (police, prosecutors, judges), criminal procedure, criminal law, criminal punishments, victims' rights, and the juvenile system. He illustrates his points with real-life stories of crime and punishment. Throughout the book, Anderson emphasizes two facts--that crime prevention programs, stricter law enforcement, and increased prison space have dramatically lowered the crime rate in Texas and that citizen activism is very effective in bringing reform to the criminal justice system. This book will be essential reading for everyone--public and professional--concerned with criminal justice in Texas.
