This innovative resource introduces service learning and why it can be such a helpful tool for students, the elderly, and the larger community. Successful service learning projects are described throughout the book, which highlight how they work as well as the benefits of getting to know the often overlooked senior population within our communities. Forthright discussions of the challenges and benefits highlight why service-learning projects can be a satisfying, fun, and memorable way to learn.

Chapter I provides an overview of the problem of illiterate older adults and literacy education for them. Chapter II addresses the planning of a literacy program for older adults, including special planning concerns, the planning committee, outreach strategies, and program promotion and publicity. Chapter III focuses on direct-service management issues--tutor and peer support recruitment, volunteer training, and older student recruitment. Strategies for success are presented in Chapter IV. They include matching students and tutors, choosing a site, providing support, recognition, and program evaluation. Chapter V provides results of an in-depth study of 27 sites that participated in Project LEEP (Literacy Education for the Elderly). Chapter VI describes LEEP programs in five communities. Chapter VII is an annotated listing of organizations that can be useful to anyone interested in developing literacy programs for older adults. It is divided into sections on training and technical assistance, coordination and support, funding and resource development, and clearinghouse/information and referral. Sample project materials are appended. (YLB)

Book Home and Community Based Services for Older Adults

Download or read book Home and Community Based Services for Older Adults written by Keith Anderson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As older adults and their families opt out of nursing homes, a range of home and community-based services (HCBS) have risen up to provide care. HCBS span platforms and approaches, from home health care to assisted living to community-based hospice to adult day services. These models are, for most, preferable to nursing homes and allow older adults to “age in place”—live longer in their own homes and communities. Home- and Community-Based Services for Older Adults examines the existing and emerging models of HCBS, including the history, theory, research, policy, and practices across care settings. Emphasizing the multidisciplinary and interprofessional practice approaches used to deliver care, this book is an essential learning tool for students interested in medicine, nursing, social work, allied health professions, case management, health care administration, and gerontology. As the population of older adults grows, the authors ask, how can we best meet the needs of older adults and their families in the most effective, cost-conscious way while honoring their care choices?

Book Community Resources for Older Adults

Download or read book Community Resources for Older Adults written by Robbyn R. Wacker and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is intended for courses on community services and programmes for the elderly, typically found in gerontology departments and departments of social work. Rather than simply focusing on building awareness of the various programmes and services available, the authors stress the importance of the theoretical knowledge that will assist in understanding the social and psychological dynamics of help-seeking behaviour. By understanding the social and psychological needs of the elderly and their families, as well as the services available to them, students will be better able to take advantage of resources available to help their clients. This new edition will update the key policy updates affecting older adults as well as the census data offered throughout the text. It will also update the many unique pedagogical features such as the sections titled FYI, best practices, case studies and the web and national resources. Increased attention will be focused on aging and diverse populations and the idea of cultural competency than previous editions, as this area has continued to become a critical part of delivering effective care. Also, international issues, faith-based services, services for LGBT elders, rural elders, immigrants, and other special populations will also be covered or expanded in the new edition.
