Book Community Based Monitoring Initiatives of Water and Environment Evaluation of Establishment Dynamics and Results

Download or read book Community Based Monitoring Initiatives of Water and Environment Evaluation of Establishment Dynamics and Results written by Mohammad Gharesifard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizen participation in water and environmental management via community-based monitoring (CBM) has been praised for the potential to facilitate better informed, more inclusive, transparent, and representative decision making. However, methodological and empirical research trying to conceptualize and evaluate the dynamics at play that might enable or hinder these initiatives from delivering on their potential is limited. This research contributed to the conceptualization of CBMs through development of a conceptual framework that is suitable for Context analysis, Process evaluation and Impact assessment of CBMs – the CPI Framework. This conceptualization provides an interpretation of what 'community' means in the context of a CBM initiative. In addition, this research contributed to the existing empirical knowledge about the establishment, functioning and outcomes of CBMs by testing the CPI Framework for studying two real life CBMs throughout the lifetime of an EU-funded project - the Ground Truth 2.0. The first CBM is called Grip op Water Altena that focuses on the issue of pluvial floods in 'Land van Heusden en Altena' of the Netherlands. The second CBM is Maasai Mara Citizen Observatory and aims at contributing to a better balance between biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihood management in the Mara ecosystem in Kenya.

Book Blue Genes

  • Author : Brian Harvey
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2013-06-17
  • ISBN : 1136570853
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Blue Genes written by Brian Harvey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advance of genetic sciences has led to a 'blue revolution' in the way we use aquatic biodiversity. By 2020, the world will be eating almost as much farmed as wild fish, marine bacteria could yield the cure for cancer and deep-sea bacteria may be exploited to gobble up oil spills. Science is moving ahead at a staggering speed, and the demand for genetic resources is growing rapidly - yet governance and policy lag far behind. This groundbreaking work is the first to look at the ownership, governance and trade in aquatic genetic resources. Blue Genes describes the growing demand for aquatic genetic resources and the desperate need to fill the policy vacuum about the management and conservation of aquatic biodiversity, which would help create a foundation for rules dictating access to, and use of, aquatic genetic resources. Special attention is paid to indigenous and local people having the right to access these resources and their role in managing and conserving aquatic biodiversity. The book concludes with policy recommendations specifically tailored to aquatic resources, with the use of six case studies from four continents to illustrate key issues.

Book Risks and opportunities in the biodiversity management and related stakeholder involvement of the RWE Hambach lignite mine

Download or read book Risks and opportunities in the biodiversity management and related stakeholder involvement of the RWE Hambach lignite mine written by International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), Global Business and Biodiversity Programme and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is part of a joint undertaking by IUCN and RWE to explore the possibility of integrating biodiversity values into RWE policies and practices. It was felt that a closer examination of the biodiversity management undertaken by RWE at the Hambach mining site during the past 35 years and the methods of the company's stakehodler engagement processes were needed. This examination offers IUCN the best opportunity to understand RWE's past approaches to biodiversity and for RWE to learn about today's needs for the integrated biodiversity management approaches advocated by IUCN. The report aims to provide the basis for development of a company-wide strategic approach to the management of biodiversity and related stakeholder needs.

Book The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss

Download or read book The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss written by Alexander Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is losing species and biodiversity at an unprecedented rate. The causes go deep and the losses are driven by a complex array of social, economic, political and biological factors at different levels. Immediate causes such as over-harvesting, pollution and habitat change have been well studied, but the socioeconomic factors driving people to degrade their environment are less well understood. This book examines the underlying causes. It provides analyses of a range of case studies from Brazil, Cameroon, China, Danube River Basin, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Tanzania and Vietnam, and integrates them into a new and interdisciplinary framework for understanding what is happening. From these results, the editors are able to derive policy conclusions and recommendations for operational and institutional approaches to address the root causes and reverse the current trends. It makes a contribution to the understanding of all those - from ecologists and conservationists to economists and policy makers - working on one of the major challenges we face.
