    Book Details:
  • Author : Béla Bollobás
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2006-09-14
  • ISBN : 1139936662
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book The Art of Mathematics written by Béla Bollobás and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a Christian escape from a lion? How quickly can a rumour spread? Can you fool an airline into accepting oversize baggage? Recreational mathematics is full of frivolous questions where the mathematician's art can be brought to bear. But play often has a purpose. In mathematics, it can sharpen skills, provide amusement, or simply surprise, and books of problems have been the stock-in-trade of mathematicians for centuries. This collection is designed to be sipped from, rather than consumed in one sitting. The questions range in difficulty: the most challenging offer a glimpse of deep results that engage mathematicians today; even the easiest prompt readers to think about mathematics. All come with solutions, many with hints, and most with illustrations. Whether you are an expert, or a beginner or an amateur mathematician, this book will delight for a lifetime.

Book Statistical Field Theory Volume 1 From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory

Download or read book Statistical Field Theory Volume 1 From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory written by Claude Itzykson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-29 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1: From Brownian Motion to Renormalization and Lattice Gauge Theory. Volume 2: Strong Coupling, Monte Carlo Methods, Conformal Field Theory, and Random Systems. This two-volume work provides a comprehensive and timely survey of the application of the methods of quantum field theory to statistical physics, a very active and fruitful area of modern research. The first volume provides a pedagogical introduction to the subject, discussing Brownian motion, its anticommutative counterpart in the guise of Onsager's solution to the two-dimensional Ising model, the mean field or Landau approximation, scaling ideas exemplified by the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory for the XY transition, the continuous renormalization group applied to the standard phi-to the fourth theory (the simplest typical case) and lattice gauge theory as a pathway to the understanding of quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. The second volume covers more diverse topics, including strong coupling expansions and their analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, two-dimensional conformal field theory, and simple disordered systems. The book concludes with a chapter on random geometry and the Polyakov model of random surfaces which illustrates the relations between string theory and statistical physics. The two volumes that make up this work will be useful to theoretical physicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in the exciting developments which have resulted from the synthesis of field theory and statistical physics.

Book Matrix Variate Distributions

Download or read book Matrix Variate Distributions written by A K Gupta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful in physics, economics, psychology, and other fields, random matrices play an important role in the study of multivariate statistical methods. Until now, however, most of the material on random matrices could only be found scattered in various statistical journals. Matrix Variate Distributions gathers and systematically presents most of the recent developments in continuous matrix variate distribution theory and includes new results. After a review of the essential background material, the authors investigate the range of matrix variate distributions, including: matrix variate normal distribution Wishart distribution Matrix variate t-distribution Matrix variate beta distribution F-distribution Matrix variate Dirichlet distribution Matrix quadratic forms With its inclusion of new results, Matrix Variate Distributions promises to stimulate further research and help advance the field of multivariate statistical analysis.

Book Equilibrium And Non equilibrium Statistical Mechanics New And Revised Printing

Download or read book Equilibrium And Non equilibrium Statistical Mechanics New And Revised Printing written by Carolyne M Van Vliet and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encompasses our current understanding of the ensemble approach to many-body physics, phase transitions and other thermal phenomena, as well as the quantum foundations of linear response theory, kinetic equations and stochastic processes. It is destined to be a standard text for graduate students, but it will also serve the specialist-researcher in this fascinating field; some more elementary topics have been included in order to make the book self-contained.The historical methods of J Willard Gibbs and Ludwig Boltzmann, applied to the quantum description rather than phase space, are featured. The tools for computations in the microcanonical, canonical and grand-canonical ensembles are carefully developed and then applied to a variety of classical and standard quantum situations. After the language of second quantization has been introduced, strongly interacting systems, such as quantum liquids, superfluids and superconductivity, are treated in detail. For the connoisseur, there is a section on diagrammatic methods and applications. In the second part dealing with non-equilibrium processes, the emphasis is on the quantum foundations of Markovian behaviour and irreversibility via the Pauli-Van Hove master equation. Justifiable linear response expressions and the quantum-Boltzmann approach are discussed and applied to various condensed matter problems. From this basis the Onsager-Casimir relations are derived, together with the mesoscopic master equation, the Langevin equation and the Fokker-Planck truncation procedure. Brownian motion and modern stochastic problems such as fluctuations in optical signals and radiation fields briefly make the round.

Book Bilinear Forms and Zonal Polynomials

Download or read book Bilinear Forms and Zonal Polynomials written by Arak M. Mathai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with bilinear forms in real random vectors and their generalizations as well as zonal polynomials and their applications in handling generalized quadratic and bilinear forms. The book is mostly self-contained. It starts from basic principles and brings the readers to the current research level in these areas. It is developed with detailed proofs and illustrative examples for easy readability and self-study. Several exercises are proposed at the end of the chapters. The complicated topic of zonal polynomials is explained in detail in this book. The book concentrates on the theoretical developments in all the topics covered. Some applications are pointed out but no detailed application to any particular field is attempted. This book can be used as a textbook for a one-semester graduate course on quadratic and bilinear forms and/or on zonal polynomials. It is hoped that this book will be a valuable reference source for graduate students and research workers in the areas of mathematical statistics, quadratic and bilinear forms and their generalizations, zonal polynomials, invariant polynomials and related topics, and will benefit statisticians, mathematicians and other theoretical and applied scientists who use any of the above topics in their areas. Chapter 1 gives the preliminaries needed in later chapters, including some Jacobians of matrix transformations. Chapter 2 is devoted to bilinear forms in Gaussian real ran dom vectors, their properties, and techniques specially developed to deal with bilinear forms where the standard methods for handling quadratic forms become complicated.

Book excerpt: The singular and regular Cauchy problems in question are relative to the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation (initial conditions being given on the singular plane t = 0 and the regular plane t = t0 > 0). This account reviews the progress made at Maryland on the subject, and was presented at the conference in Differential Equations held at the University of California at Berkeley, June 1955. An example, due to Miss R. M. Davis, is presented to show that, in general, for k
