Book International Organizations and the Media in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book International Organizations and the Media in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Jonas Brendebach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Organizations and the Media in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries is the first volume to explore the historical relationship between international organizations and the media. Beginning in the early nineteenth century and coming up to the 1990s, the volume shows how people around the globe largely learned about international organizations and their activities through the media and images created by journalists, publicists, and filmmakers in texts, sound bites, and pictures. The book examines how interactions with the media are a formative component of international organizations. At the same time, it questions some of the basic assumptions about how media promoted or enabled international governance. Written by leading scholars in the field from Europe, North America, and Australasia, and including case studies from all regions of the world, it covers a wide range of issues from humanitarianism and environmentalism to Hollywood and debates about international information orders. Bringing together two burgeoning yet largely unconnected strands of research—the history of international organizations and international media histories—this book is essential reading for scholars of international history and those interested in the development and impact of media over time.

Book Global Media and Communication Policy

Download or read book Global Media and Communication Policy written by P. Iosifidis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petros Iosifidis addresses an increasingly prominent subject area in the field of media and communications, and one that has attracted increased attention in areas such as sociology, economics, political science and law: global media policy and regulation. Specifically, he considers the wider social, political, economic and technological changes arising from the globalization of the communications industries and assesses their impact on matters of regulation and policy. By focusing on the convergence of the communication and media industries, he makes reference to the paradigmatic shift from a system based on the traditions of public service in broadcast and telecommunications delivery to one that is demarcated by commercialization, privatization and competition. In doing so, Iosifidis tackles a key question in the field: to what extent do new media developments require changes in regulatory philosophy and objectives. It considers the various possible meanings of the public interest concept in exploring the different regulatory modes and the interplay between the local and the global in policy-making.

Book Afro Optimism

  • Author : Ebere Onwudiwe
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2002-12-30
  • ISBN : 0313014205
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Afro Optimism written by Ebere Onwudiwe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-12-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The view that Africa regressed the moment that colonial governments left its shores is widespread. This volume is a counterpoint to the orthodoxy. Here 13 scholars with specializations ranging from literature and history to philosophy and economics argue that Africa has advanced since colonialism and is poised to march forward in spite of setbacks and disappointments. The contributors to the book contend that development is about human beings, so they do not rely exclusively on statistical estimates and projections. Afro-Optimism is a book with a simple thesis: Africa is marching forward, even if at times haltingly and at a different pace from the rest of the world. A common view among journalists and academics alike is that African conditions declined the moment colonial governments left its shores. The chapters in this book cover Africa's progress in health, agriculture, transportation, cultural innovation, and economic advancement. The contributors to the book contend that development is about human beings, so they do not rely exclusively on statistical estimates and projections. The essays in this book discuss the advances African states have made in spite of, and at times because of, their experiences of European colonial rule. The contributors argue that in all facets of development, Africans had to overcome colonial obstacles or had to build on meager colonial foundations. Although the authors acknowledge Africa's disappointing performance in various respects, they stress throughout that exclusive concentration on African failures creates new and reinforces existing negative perceptions of contemporary Africa.

Book Media Reforms and Democratization in Emerging Democracies of Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Media Reforms and Democratization in Emerging Democracies of Sub Saharan Africa written by Ufuoma Akpojivi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the media reform processes and re-democratization projects of Ghana and Nigeria’s emerging democracies. It evaluates and critiques these reform processes, arguing that because of dependency approaches resulting from the transplanting of policy framework from the West into these emerging democracies, the policy goals and objectives of the reforms have not been achieved. Consequently, the inherent socio-cultural, economic and political factors, coupled with the historical antecedents of these countries, have also affected the reform process. Drawing from policy documents, analyses and interviews, Ufuoma Akpojivi argues that the lack of citizens’ active participation in policy processes has led to neo-liberalization and the continued universalization of Western ideologies such as democracy, media freedom and independence. Akpojivi posits that the recognition of socio-cultural, political and economic factors inherent to these emerging democracies, coupled with the communal participation of citizens, will facilitate true media reform processes and development of these countries.

Download or read book Mass Communication written by Tyler Miller and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass Communication has taken deep roots in the world. Mass communication research is a sprawling and multidisciplinary field of research approaches and theories, drawing inspiration from a range of disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences, and even from science disciplines such as mathematics, computing, and engineering. It continually develops and adapts to the changing nature and application of media technologies as well as changing political and social concerns with 'the media'. It influences almost all the aspects of human life viz. medical, education, culture, tradition and fashion etc. Like all other subjects mass communication also is worthy of research so that it can develop in a more understandable form. This book presents an epistemological view of levels of analysis. It guides the readers to understanding the challenges of media measurement, its quantification, datafication and assessment, and helps in developing skills of media audience analysis. A comparative analysis is also made as where required. The author is hopeful that this book will be very useful to those who have a flair of learning more about the mass communication.
