While very distinct patterns can be seen throughout the life-stages of women, few studies have looked at these patterns in mature females. As we maneuver through the stages of life, the ways we communicate with one another drastically change. With the baby boomer generation beginning to reach retirement age, it is becoming critical to study the ways in which older adults communicate. This study uses an inductive, critical approach to determine if specific communication patterns exist among women living in retirement communities. Multiple case studies were conducted and many patterns were discovered that are congruent with those seen in adolescence. Ten women, living in retirement communities throughout eastern Washington, were interviewed on the subject of female communication strategies in retirement. Their observations and experiences were analyzed using discourse analysis and the results support the notion that communicative behavior is similar to that displayed throughout the school-years. Six distinct themes were discovered to exist among this population"--Document.
