Book excerpt: Communication and the Dental Team is an essential guide for all dental team members including trainees and undergraduates. The book is written in an easily accessible style by two leading communicators in dentistry in response to requests from many dental practitioners and their teams. Care of clients in any successful organisation begins and ends with communication. Dental care is no different. The book is designed to help the team to place the patient at the heart of dental practice and to allow patients to participate fully in their care. The authors observe that the teams in happy, successful dental practices smile and talk a lot. This book is intended to bring that ambience to all practices. Includes advice on successfully: building good relationships with patients and colleagues, meeting other people, learning and teaching motivation, using the psychology of neuro-linguistic programming, and dealing with problems in the practice.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy focuses on bringing together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to address challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. The roundtable serves to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding the issues of health literacy, sponsoring workshops to discuss approaches to resolve health literacy challenges. It also builds partnerships to move the field of health literacy forward by translating research findings into practical strategies for implementation. The Roundtable held a workshop March 29, 2012, to explore the field of oral health literacy. The workshop was organized by an independent planning committee in accordance with the procedures of the National Academy of Sciences. The planning group was composed of Sharon Barrett, Benard P. Dreyer, Alice M. Horowitz, Clarence Pearson, and Rima Rudd. The role of the workshop planning committee was limited to planning the workshop. Unlike a consensus committee report, a workshop summary may not contain conclusions and recommendations, except as expressed by and attributed to individual presenters and participants. Therefore, the summary has been prepared by the workshop rapporteur as a factual summary of what occurred at the workshop.

Download or read book How To Break Bad News written by Robert Buckman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1992-08-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many health care professionals and social service providers, the hardest part of the job is breaking bad news. The news may be about a condition that is life-threatening (such as cancer or AIDS), disabling (such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis), or embarrassing (such as genital herpes). To date medical education has done little to train practitioners in coping with such situations. With this guide Robert Buckman and Yvonne Kason provide help. Using plain, intelligible language they outline the basic principles of breaking bad new and present a technique, or protocol, that can be easily learned. It draws on listening and interviewing skills that consider such factors as how much the patient knows and/or wants to know; how to identify the patient's agenda and understanding, and how to respond to his or her feelings about the information. They also discuss reactions of family and friends and of other members of the health care team. Based on Buckman's award-winning training videos and Kason's courses on interviewing skills for medical students, this volume is an indispensable aid for doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, social workers, and all those in related fields.
