Book excerpt: As a teacher, how can I increase my personal effectiveness, and how can I improve the quality of relationships in the classroom? These are the two fundamental questions which Human Relations in Education sets out to answer - in a way that will appeal to all those concerned with education. Eric and Carol Hall examine issues such as self-concept, social and emotional learning, the dynamics of the staffroom and the classroom, as well as stress management and relaxation. They demonstrate how these affect human relations in schools and colleges. Interpersonal communications and counselling skills are then examined in terms of language, imagery and non-verbal communication. With its original blend of theory and practical exercises, Human Relations in Education is essential reading for both experienced teachers and teachers in training.

Book Gender Power and Communication in Human Relationships

Download or read book Gender Power and Communication in Human Relationships written by Pamela J. Kalbfleisch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume establishes a state-of-the-art perspective on theory and research on gender, power, and communication in human relationships. Both theoretical essays and review chapters address issues relevant to female and male differences in power, dominance, communication, equality, and expectations/beliefs. All chapter contributors share two commonalities. First, each provides a 1990s assessment of power and equality in female and male relationships. Second, each reviews respective programs of research and focuses attention on the relevance of this research to understanding the relationships of women and men. Unique because it incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to the study of gender and the communication of power in human relationships, this book includes the original work of intellectuals with national and international reputations in the social sciences. The volume provides both scholastic breadth and centralized treatment of issues that form the very foundation of social and personal relationships. It will appeal to scholars working in the disciplines of communication and psychology as well as other areas of social science research.

Book Communication in Interpersonal Relationships

Download or read book Communication in Interpersonal Relationships written by Donald P. Cushman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses communication principles, processes, and skills from four different perspectives by explaining four related propositions. First, human communication is guided by socially established rules, the knowledge of which allows interacting persons to exert influence over the outcome of their interactions. Second, self concepts are formed and sustained in our interactions with others. Third, the formation of sustained interpersonal relations depends upon the attraction resulting from reciprocal self concept support. And fourth, organizations and the cultural system provide the parameters within which self concepts and interpersonal relations are formed. The implications of these propositions are examined in chapters two through ten. The authors develop their system in terms of results. What patterns of communication—what patterns of signal exchange—increase the probability of the development of affective relationship? What patterns erode interpersonal systems or prevent them from forming? The book also examines patterns of communication within task-oriented organizations and in situations involving cultural differences.

Book Semiotic Approaches to Human Relations

Download or read book Semiotic Approaches to Human Relations written by Juergen Ruesch and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1951 psychiatrist Jürgen Ruesch and polymath Gregory Bateson published "Communication: The Social Matrix of Psychiatry" within which was the first designation of the discipline of human communication. Their communication model took into account the complexity of curvilinear human interaction (three dimensional, multi-directional transactions, interpreting signs and symbols in language, or semiotics) and created four divisions of communication amenable to scientific study. These are intrapersonal communication (e.g., one's own thinking); interpersonal communication (e.g., conversation); group communication (e.g., a work team); and cultural communication (e.g., a global conference). Many scholars thus consider Jürgen Ruesch as a virtual founder of the modern human science discipline of communication. This volume collects his most influential articles in that discipline.
