Book What It All Means

Download or read book What It All Means written by Philippe Schlenker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How meaning works—from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music—and how meaning is connected to truth. We communicate through language, connecting what we mean to the words we say. But humans convey meaning in other ways as well, with facial expressions, hand gestures, and other methods. Animals, too, can get their meanings across without words. In What It All Means, linguist Philippe Schlenker explains how meaning works, from monkey calls to human language, from spoken language to sign language, from gestures to music. He shows that these extraordinarily diverse types of meaning can be studied and compared within a unified approach—one in which the notion of truth plays a central role. “It’s just semantics” is often said dismissively. But Schlenker shows that semantics—the study of meaning—is an unsung success of modern linguistics, a way to investigate some of the deepest questions about human nature using tools from the empirical and formal sciences. Drawing on fifty years of research in formal semantics, Schlenker traces how meaning comes to life. After investigating meaning in primate communication, he explores how human meanings are built, using in some cases sign languages as a guide to the workings of our inner “logic machine.” Schlenker explores how these meanings can be enriched by iconicity in sign language and by gestures in spoken language, and then turns to more abstract forms of iconicity to understand the meaning of music. He concludes by examining paradoxes, which—being neither true nor false—test the very limits of meaning.

Book Application of Web Service Technologies on a B2B Communication Platform by Means of a Pattern and UML Based Software Development Process

Download or read book Application of Web Service Technologies on a B2B Communication Platform by Means of a Pattern and UML Based Software Development Process written by Arnd Schnieders and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2003-09-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: There are about 230.000 establishments in the Spanish hotel, restaurant and catering industry accounting for a turnover of about 15.6 thousand million euros. All of them sell food to private consumers. On the other hand suppliers and traders supply the catering trade with food and beverage products. Usually the different players in this food distribution network trade products by means of orders which are placed manually. This is a process which can be enhanced through the application of computer and Internet technology. A project lately also supported by the Spanish government is supposed to fill this gap. This project is called Catanet and has been established three years ago. Actually the Catanet platform is used by more than 100 customers, amongst them very important industry players like Lauren Films, Pepsi, Unilever and Nestle. Some of them will carry out a significant part of their overall food orders by the Catanet platform, which corresponds to a turnover volume of many million euros. In the former version of the Catanet platform clients had to apply a web page based interface in order to use the Catanet services. As this approach prohibited the full exploitation of the benefits the use of computer assistance provides (e.g. human participation still constitutes an inevitable and crucial part of the transaction, the interaction is completely asynchronous) an additional level is being added to the Catanet platform eliminating these shortcomings. During the time of this work the number of Catanet customers has grown explosively increasing also the diversity of the customer s computer systems. Additionally new subprojects could be launched due to the acquisition of a government grant. These encompassed among others new value added services demanded by the customers like an instant messaging module and a module for the automatic update of the local product catalogue. The characteristics of the IT infrastructure of the new customers which will carry out transactions with a serious turnover via the Catanet platform and the necessity to integrate the new subprojects required an adaptation of the design of the platform prototype which had been developed by this time and which is described in this work. Within this context the decision has been done to use .NET Framework based programs on the customer side instead of Java which had been used so far. The reasons for this were besides the easier integration with the IT [...]

The premise of this book is to understand English language and its practice thus enabling us to use it more effectively. This skill can enhance personal communication, college/university work finally percolating down to professional lives. Therefore, the present book will be useful for advanced level students who face difficulty with grammar and need a book for reference and practice. In writing this book, I have drawn on many years of my expertise in teaching, research, and writing. I Have taught the English language in a range of institutions and to multiple age groups at different levels: at a college of further education, and universities. Therefore, this book in front of you is a systematic account of grammatical forms and the way they are used in standard British English today. The emphasis is on the meanings and how the govern the choice of grammatical patterns. The book is thorough in its coverage but also pays attention to the points that are of importance to the intermediate and advanced learners of English, and to their teachers. It would be equally suitable for quick reference to details and the more leisured study of grammar topics. A useful feature of the book is the inclusion of example text and conversations, many of them authentic, to show how grammar is used in connected writing and speech. Study the rules, review the examples, and look for more examples of good writing in newspapers, magazines, and other available sources on the internet. Complete the exercises to practice what you have learned, but also remember to apply the rules whenever you speak and write. There are writing test exercises too for assessing the reader’s progress. Although every effort has been made to make the book as useful and accurate as possible but if students of teachers have any comments, criticisms, or suggestions I would be very pleased to hear from them. The more you use what’s written in this book, the better you would be able to apply it in real life. In the end, you will be a better and more effective speaker and writer. You’re on your way—good luck! Some salient features of the book: · This book is designed to help the reader’s master the basics of English grammar that they need to succeed in their studies. Best of all, when students understand the underpinnings of English language, learning will be fun – as it should be. This book has multiple purposes. Book Linguistic Variables

Download or read book Linguistic Variables written by Hans-Heinrich Lieb and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-09-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book for the first time reconstructs in a single theoretical framework the more important approaches to linguistic variation found in areas as different as historical linguistics, dialectology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, contrastive linguistics, language typology, so-called evaluation grammar, and current Chomskyan generative grammar (generally with an emphasis on syntax). The book concentrates on language-internal variation but also analyses typological research and considers the question of how linguistic descriptions may account for variation both within and between languages. The book's first and primary aim is adequate conceptualization in the area of linguistic variation. Its second aim is a practical one: to contribute, from a theoretical point of view, to the vast descriptive effort that is demanded in linguistics in documenting endangered languages. Its third aim is, simply, orientation. Using a non-Labovian notion of linguistic variable, the author distinguishes a holistic and a component approach to linguistic variation. A precise version of the former is developed by formulating a theory of language varieties based on the concept of variety structure of a language; it is then shown how the proposals made by major representatives of the component approach can be integrated into this framework. The theory is extended to interlanguage variation and applied, in particular, to typology. It is further extended to establish the properties of linguistic descriptions that account for variation in a unified way.

Book excerpt: The games presented in this book were designed to allow the ball and the game to be the true teachers. The aim is to get away from stagnant, boring line drills and restrictive exercises and give ownership of the game back to the players in the form of fun, age-appropriate exercises. In recent years, coaching at youth level, not only in soccer but in all sports, has trended toward specialization and over-coaching, which in effect has taken the joy of the game away and in many cases driven players away from the sport. These games will not only make your practices more fun, they will teach your players the skills and principles of soccer while allowing for creative expression.
