Book Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics

Download or read book Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics written by Steffen Bo Jensen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics explores the notoriously brutal Philippine war on drugs from below. Steffen Bo Jensen and Karl Hapal examine how the war on drugs folded itself into communal and intimate spheres in one Manila neighborhood, Bagong Silang. Police killings have been regular occurrences since the birth of Bagong Silang. Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics shows that although the drug war was introduced from the outside, it fit into and perpetuated already existing gendered and generational structures. In Bagong Silang, the war on drugs implicated local structures of authority, including a justice system that had always been deeply integrated into communal relations. The ways in which the war on drugs transformed these intimate relations between the state and its citizens, and between neighbors, may turn out to be the most lasting impact of Duterte's infamously violent policies.

Book Communal Politics

Download or read book Communal Politics written by Ram Puniyani and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2003-04-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucid and absorbing book explores many facets of communalism and its growing threat to the social fabric of the nation. Ram Puniyani argues that one of the main reasons for the ascendancy of communal politics is the misconceptions and distortions spread by those bent upon constructing an identity based on suspicion and hatred. These misconceptions (or myths as the author calls them) are drawn from different arenas such as history and culture and are built upon a partial projection of events and `facts`combined with a skewed assertion of norms and practices of the `other` community. A mountain of hatred, says the author, is then built upon these totally selective `facts` which misinform and mould common perceptions. Overall, this fascinating book dispels, in a novel and logical manner, many distortions which have been responsible for arousing communal passions and which have created an external or `enemy` image of religious minorities and the socially disadvantaged.

Book Communal Luxury

Download or read book Communal Luxury written by Kristin Ross and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-11-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming the legacy of the Paris Commune for the twenty-first century Kristin Ross’s highly acclaimed work on the thought and culture of the Communard uprising of 1871 resonates with the motivations and actions of contemporary protest, which has found its most powerful expression in the reclamation of public space. Today’s concerns—internationalism, education, the future of labor, the status of art, and ecological theory and practice—frame and inform her carefully researched restaging of the words and actions of individual Communards. This original analysis of an event and its centrifugal effects brings to life the workers in Paris who became revolutionaries, the significance they attributed to their struggle, and the elaboration and continuation of their thought in the encounters that transpired between the insurrection’s survivors and supporters like Marx, Kropotkin, and William Morris. The Paris Commune was a laboratory of political invention, important simply and above all for, as Marx reminds us, its own “working existence.” Communal Luxury allows readers to revisit the intricate workings of an extraordinary experiment.

Sidney Verba and Norman H. Nie addresses the question of who participates in the American democratic process, how, and with what effects. They distinguish four kinds of political participation: voting, campaigning, communal activity, and interaction with a public official to achieve a personal goal. Using a national sample survey and interviews with leaders in 64 communities, the authors investigate the correlation between socioeconomic status and political participation. Recipient of the Kammerer Award (1972), Participation in America provides fundamental information about the nature of American democracy.

Book Anatomy of a Confrontation

Download or read book Anatomy of a Confrontation written by Sarvepalli Gopal and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1993 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of the Hindu fundamentalist BJP as a significant electoral force nationwide, Indian politics are in the process of a major shift in character. Not only is the shaky hold of Congress on power threatened by this dynamic party with its overt appeal to religious chauvinism, but the secular nature of the Indian state and delicate balance of relations between diverse religious communities are at stake. The eminent scholars who have collaborated in this book examine both the flash point issue of the mosque at Ayodha (demolished by militant Hindus), as well as the deeper causes - historic and contemporary - underlying rising communal tension in India today/ This book constitutes a profound but accessible re-examination of many basic features of Indian society and politics.

Download or read book A Narrative of Communal Politics written by Salil Misra and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2001-05 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promulgation of the Government of India Act of 1935 not only reinforced the phenomenon of separate electorates on the basis of religion but led to a dramatic change in the nature of communalism in the Indian subcontinent. This is the story of how the different political forces in Uttar Pradesh the Congress, the Muslim League, the landlords and the Hindu Mahasabha responded to the new context, and how they strove to establish control over the available political space. This seminal work is a significant departure from other studies of the period, in that it addresses communalism as an independent force, acutely conscious of its interests and very keen on preserving itself, and not allied to either the Congress or the British.
