Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume uses Guyana as an excellent, comprehensive case study to examine various sectors’ operations, effects upon the environment and the ways in which the sector can impact upon the vitality and development potential of other sectors. The authors attempt to demonstrate how it is possible to adjust current sectoral activities for improved resource utilisation. They begin in the interior looking at mining and forest resource exploitation. Attention then moves towards the coast, looking at agriculture, fishing, human settlement and service provision. A review of industry, transport and energy follows before examining biodiversity, tourism and the Amerindian community. Finally, a detailed analysis is presented of the challenges to be faced in devising a sustainable development national strategy.

Book Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources

Download or read book Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources written by Biological Diversity & Genetic Resources Project and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 1992 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of genetic resources have been priority issues for a number of countries and international organisations over the past decade. We have begun to realise that the rapid rate of development at all costs has generated forces that are threatening to destroy the very substratum of life on Earth.Biological diversity is the building block of the myriad life forms on our planet and our defence against global climate changes. Wider acceptance of this truth has given an impetus to the need for further work at political and scientific levels. However, little information is available on how to study, use and conserve our biological and genetic resources. The Commonwealth Science Council's programme on biological diversity and genetic resources attempts to redress this imbalance. Launched in 1986, this programme recognises that good policies for conservation of our genetic resources require not only public investment by a systematic approach for institutionalising the key process of such conservation. The programme supports the development of appropriate courses, documents and training materials for capacity building at the local level. This book discusses the programme and aims to contribute significantly towards establishing relevant mechanisms and developing practical action plans for conserving and sustainably using our rapidly vanishing biological diversity.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already in its sixth year of existence, this "Documentary Yearbook" provides you with the only independent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by international organizations. The "Yearbook" is arranged systematically and thereby gives the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea much improved access to essential documentation. Like the previous volumes, the 1990 volume focuses on the United Nations family of international organizations and on several non-UN intergovernmental organizations of developing states. The most important documents which were issued in the course of 1990 are reproduced (in whole or in part), while other relevant documents are listed. An extensive index of Keywords facilitates access by the reader to the complex and often interrelated matters dealt with by various organizations as well as to the information concerning individual states, regions and international instruments.

Book The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests

Download or read book The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests written by Caroline Harcourt and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final volume in the The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests covers the Americas. It provides an up-to-date overview of the status of rain forests in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Following the format of the two previous volumes The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests: Asia and the Pacific (1991) and The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests: Africa (1992), the atlas is divided into two parts. Part I introduces and discusses the complex interrelated issues in the regions that are involved in both deforestation as well as conservation of the tropical forests. Included are discussions on the history of the forests, agricultural colonization policies and deforestation, conservation polices for plants and wildlife, protected areas, and the future of the tropical forests. Part II is a detailed and well referenced country-by-country analysis of conservation status and trends. Four-colour maps have been compiled from satellite and radar imagery, aerial photography, and the latest information provided by forestry departments and development agencies.
