Book Commonwealth Millennium Development Goals Partnerships

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations is a priority objective of the Commonwealth Secretariat. One third of the Commonwealth's 1.8 billion people live on less than one dollar per day; nearly two-thirds of the world's maternal deaths and HIV/AIDs cases take place in Commonwealth countries; the majority of the world's children with no access to education can be found in the Commonwealth. Time is running out: by 2005, some thirty-one of the Commonwealth's fifty-three member countries had made either slow or negligible progress on the MDGs. As Secretary-General Don McKinnon pointed out in his address to the UN World Summit, however, It's not too late to achieve the MDGs by 2015 with the requisite will, partnerships and resources.

Download or read book Commonwealth Education written by Beth Kreling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education, once regarded as a key pillar of Commonwealth activity, is increasingly inconspicuous on Commonwealth agendas. Written to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the first Commonwealth Education Conference in 1959, the chapters in this volume reflect on the past, present, and future of Commonwealth educational cooperation. This book reviews some of the principal dimensions of education development in Commonwealth member states and the challenges they face, including girls’ education, student exchange, the use of technology, education challenges in small states, and efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in and through education. Across all its contributions, this book examines the case for education being a continued priority area for Commonwealth collective engagement and considers where and how the Commonwealth might direct future efforts in education at a time of constrained resources. This book is an insightful resource for scholars and researchers involved in Commonwealth studies and will be of particular interest to political scientists, economists, and educators. This book originally appeared as a special issue of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.

Book Internationalisation of African Higher Education

Download or read book Internationalisation of African Higher Education written by Chika Sehoole and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of higher education, especially the international dimension, is given little importance in the discourse on achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa. This book aims to change that. The potential of higher education’s contribution to Africa’s development remains unrealized and often misunderstood. In today’s globalised world, which prioritises economic growth through liberalised trade and competitive market strategies, much emphasis has been placed on higher education’s ability to produce graduates to serve the labour market and produce new knowledge for the knowledge economy. While these are important contributions, the book argues that international higher education and new knowledge must go beyond economic purposes and serve the human and social development needs of the continent. It is against this background that the African Network for the Internationalisation of Education (ANIE) undertook research on the international dimension of higher education in Africa and its role in the achievement of the MDGs. Through empirical research, seven case studies address how international and regional higher education programmes and policies in African universities can address MDG priorities of promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, combating HIV/AIDS and establishing global partnerships for development through academic mobility, joint research initiatives, curriculum innovation and policy development.

Book Public Private Partnerships in Education

Download or read book Public Private Partnerships in Education written by Susan Robertson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Far from simply being a form of cost sharing between the "state" and the "market," PPP has been celebrated by some, and condemned by others, as the champion of change in the new millennium. This book has been written by the best minds in education policy, political economy, and development studies. They convincingly argue that public private partnership represents a new mode of governance that ranges from covert support of the private sector (vouchers, subsidies) to overt collaboration with corporate actors in the rapidly growing education industry. The analyses are simply brilliant and indispensable for understanding how and why this particular best/worst practice went global.' – Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Columbia University, New York, US This insightful book brings together both academics and researchers from a variety of international organizations and aid agencies to explore the complexities of public private partnerships (PPPs) as a resurgent, hybrid mode of educational governance that operates across scales, from the community to the global. The contributors expertly study the different types of partnership arrangements and thoroughly critique the value of PPPs. Some chapters explore how PPPs, as a policy idea, have been constructed in transnational agendas for educational development and circulated globally, whilst other chapters explores the role and implications of PPPs in developing countries, providing arguments for and against an expanding reliance on PPPs in national educational systems. The theoretical framing of the book draws upon leading theories of international relations to develop a unique perspective on the global governance of education. It will prove insightful for both scholars and policymakers in public policy and education.
