Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following official protection of natural environments for public benefit in Fontainebleau Forest in France (1861) and in Yosemite (1864) and Yellowstone (1872) in the USA, the New Forest Act of 1877 marked the first major instance in Britain. Art and artists were involved in this achievement to a greater extent than in all preceding cases. For the first time, and within an ecocritical framework, this study examines the role played by art during the previous anti-enclosure campaign – highlighting both the hitherto-unacknowledged extent of German influence in terms of the original artistic initiative and of German artists’ participation in the cause, as well as the significance of connections between landscape art of the day and priorities of the early Open Spaces movement. Ecocriticism in art history With works by the German and British artists George Bouverie Goddard, Wilhelm Kümpel, Alfred Pizzi Newton, Wilhelm Trautschold, Edmund George Warren

Book excerpt: That is what this book is about. It is a framework for planning, in which habitat is the key to managing wildlife and making forest managers accountable for their actions. This book is based on the collective knowledge of one group of resource professionals and their understanding about how wildlife relate to forest habitats. And it provides a longoverdue system for considering the impacts of changes in forest structure on all resident wildlife.

Download or read book Forest Recreation written by Robert W. Douglass and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Recreation focuses on the increasing consideration of forests as destination for recreation. The book aims to put together the findings of researchers on the issues and problems that confront forest recreation administrators and the demands of the public. The selection also offers guidance to forest land managers with respect to the basic requirements of forest recreation as well as in planning. The book starts by defining outdoor recreation, including history and the factors affecting this type of recreation. The text then gives information on the number of forest recreation areas and the distribution of these areas, as well as the underlying legislation covering outdoor recreation. Forest recreation planning is noted, which includes a discussion of a state-wide comprehensive outdoor recreation plan. The book also discusses site selection and the development of recreation areas. Classification of areas in forests is also described, which includes picnic grounds, camping sites, and trails. Sanitation in forest recreation areas is also discussed. The text can best serve the interest of forest land managers, forest technicians, foresters, park technicians, and private landowners who are responsible in planning, developing, and administering forest recreation places.

Download or read book Natural Disturbances and Historic Range of Variation written by Cathryn H. Greenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the historic range of variation (HRV) in the types, frequencies, severities and scales of natural disturbances, and explores how they create heterogeneous structure within upland hardwood forests of the Central Hardwood Region (CHR). The book was written in response to a 2012 forest planning rule which requires that national forests to be managed to sustain ‘ecological integrity’ and within the ‘natural range of variation’ of natural disturbances and vegetation structure. Synthesizing information on HRV of natural disturbance types, and their impacts on forest structure, has been identified as a top need.
