Book Commoner Sense

Download or read book Commoner Sense written by Patrick J. Fornari and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Commoner Sense", author Patrick J. Fornari, a no-nonsense average American working person, examines the United States' unique past, present, and possible future. Built on more than a decade of research condensed into an overview of the working person's role in America, Fornari's perspective lends credibility, importance, and a clear voice to the diminishing role of the American voter and worker in American politics. Commoner Sense addresses a variety of topics including slavery and racism, religious freedom, liberal utopian sensibility, American exceptionalism, the IRS, the economy, and Obamacare. It presents the ideas of our founding fathers, shows how those ideas are playing out in today's America, looks toward the future, and encourages each American to regain control of the country's destiny, which has been hijacked by an elite ruling class. Fornari's "everyman" life experience represents the much-neglected commonsense view of the government and country by America's working class. He details how "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" isn't just for the history books anymore; it's for the present and the future.

Book The King and Commoner Tradition

Download or read book The King and Commoner Tradition written by Mark Truesdale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King and Commoner tales were hugely popular across the late medieval and early modern periods, their cultural influence extending from Robin Hood ballads to Shakespearean national histories. This study represents the first detailed exploration of this rich and fascinating literary tradition, tracing its development across deeply politicized fifteenth-century comic tales and early modern ballads. The medieval King and Commoner tales depict an incognito king becoming lost in the forest and encountering a disgruntled commoner who complains of class oppression and poaches the king’s deer. This is an upside-down world of tricksters, violence, and politicized feasting that critiques and deconstructs medieval hierarchy. The commoners of these tales utilize the inversion of the medieval carnival, crowning themselves as liminal mock kings in the forest while threatening to rend and devour a body politic that would oppress them. These tales are complex and ambiguous, reimagining the socio-political upheaval of the late medieval period in sophisticated ruminations on class relations. By contrast, the early modern ballads and chapbooks see the tradition undergo a conservative metamorphosis. Suppressing its more radical elements amid a celebration of proto-panoptical kings, the tradition remerges as royalist propaganda in which the king watches his thankful subjects through the keyhole.

Book Lexical Priming

Download or read book Lexical Priming written by Michael Hoey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexical Priming proposes a radical new theory of the lexicon, which amounts to a completely new theory of language based on how words are used in the real world. Here they are not confined to the definitions given to them in dictionaries but instead interact with other words in common patterns of use. Using concrete statistical evidence from a corpus of newspaper English, but also referring to travel writing and literary text, the author argues that words are 'primed' for use through our experience with them, so that everything we know about a word is a product of our encounters with it. This knowledge explains how speakers of a language succeed in being fluent, creative and natural.

Book Democracy and Imperialism

Download or read book Democracy and Imperialism written by William S Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following costly U.S. engagement in two wars in the Middle East, questions about the appropriateness of American military interventions dominate foreign policy debates. Is an interventionist foreign policy compatible with the American constitutional tradition? This book examines critic Irving Babbitt’s (1865–1933) unique contribution to understanding the quality of foreign policy leadership in a democracy. Babbitt explored how a democratic nation’s foreign policy is a product of the moral and cultural tendencies of the nation’s leaders, arguing that the substitution of expansive, sentimental Romanticism for the religious and ethical traditions of the West would lead to imperialism. The United States’ move away from the restraint and order of sound constitutionalism to involve itself in the affairs of other nations will inevitably cause a clash with the “civilizational” regions that have emerged in recent decades. Democracy and Imperialism uses the question of soul types to address issues of foreign policy leadership, and discusses the leadership qualities that are necessary for sound foreign policy.
