Book The Science and Engineering of Mechanical Shock

Download or read book The Science and Engineering of Mechanical Shock written by Carl Sisemore and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a unique position in the literature as a dedicated mechanical shock analysis book. Because shock events can be extremely damaging, mechanical shock is an important topic for engineers to understand. This book provides the reader with the tools needed to quantitatively describe shock environments and their damage potential on aerospace, civil, naval and mechanical systems. The authors include the relevant history of how shock testing and analysis came to its current state and a discussion of the different types of shock environments typically experienced by systems. Development of single-degree-of-freedom theory and the theory of the shock response spectra are covered, consistent with treatment of shock spectra theory in the literature. What is unique is the expansion to other types of spectra including less common types of shock spectra and energy spectra methods using fundamental principles of structural dynamics. In addition, non-spectral methods are discussed with their applications. Non-spectral methods are almost completely absent from the current books on mechanical shock. Multi-degree-of-freedom shock spectra and multi-degree-of-freedom testing are discussed and the theory is developed. Addressing an emerging field for laboratory shock testing, the authors bring together information currently available only in journals and conference publications. The volume is ideal for engineers, structural designers, and structural materials fabricators needing a foundation to practically analyze shock environments and understand their role in structural design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unspeakable probes the relationship between trauma theory and Christian theology in order to support preachers in the task of crafting sermons that adequately respond to trauma in the pews and the world at large. How might sermons contribute to resiliency and the repairing of wounds caused by traumatic experiences? This book seeks to provide a theological lens for preachers who wonder how their ‘beautiful words’ can address suffering amid traumatic wounding. Preaching is a healing discourse that proclaims gospel, or good news. Gospel is a complicated reality, especially in the face of trauma. Drawing on various theologies and insights from trauma theory, Unspeakable challenges the notion of a triumphant gospel, seeking an in-between perspective that honors both resurrection and the trauma that remains despite our desire to get to the good news. It builds on images of the preacher as witness and midwife in order to develop homiletical practices that acknowledge the limitations of language and imagination experienced by traumatized individuals.

Please see the Related Items Tab for a direct link I selected Models for Quantifying Risk as the text for my class. Given that the syllabus had changed quite dramatically from prior years, I was looking for a text that would cover all the material in the new syllabus in a way that was rigorous, easy to understand, and would prepare students for the May 2012 MLC exam. To me, the text with the accompanying solutions manual does precisely that. --Jay Vadiveloo, Ph.D., FSA, MAAA, CFA, Math Department, University of Connecticut I found that the exposition of the material is thorough while the concepts are readily accessible and well illustrated with examples. The book was an invaluable source of practice problems when I was preparing for the Exam MLC. Studying from it enabled me to pass this exam." -- Dmitry Glotov, Math Department, University of Connecticut "This book is extremely well written and structured." -- Kate Li, Student, University of Connecticut "Overall, the text is thorough, understandable, and well-organized. The clear exposition and excellent use of examples will benefit the student and help her avoid 'missing the forest for the trees'. I was impressed by the quality and quantity of examples and exercises throughout the text; students will find this collection of problems sorted by topic valuable for their exam preparation. Overall, I strongly recommend the book." -- Kristin Moore, Ph.D., ASA, University of Michigan

This work details the meaning of economic development and the comparative analysis of the recent growth of India and China, also the modelling of the macroeconomics of poverty reduction and the monetary policy rules in transition economies. Lastly, the research analyses the Asian Financial crisis, the impact of migration on investment and economic growth and international consumption patterns.

Book Foreign Entanglements

Download or read book Foreign Entanglements written by Mr.Andrew Swiston and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VARs of real growth since 1970 are used to estimate spillovers between the U.S., euro area, Japan, and an aggregate of small industrial countries, which proxies for global shocks. U.S. and global shocks generate significant spillovers, while those from the euro area and Japan are small. This paper also calculates the standard errors of impulse-response functions including uncertainty over the proper Cholesky ordering. Extensions adding real net exports, commodity prices, and financial variables indicate that financial effects dominate spillovers. The results by subperiod underline the importance of the great moderation in U.S. output fluctuations and associated financial stability in lowering output volatility elsewhere.

Book Real Sectoral Spillovers A Dynamic Factor Analysis of the Great Recession

Download or read book Real Sectoral Spillovers A Dynamic Factor Analysis of the Great Recession written by MissNan Li and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies changes in the transmission of common versus sectoral idiosyncratic shocks across different U.S. nonfarm business sectors during the Great Recession, and evaluates the cross-sectoral spillovers. Shocks are identified by dynamic factor methods. We find that the Great Recession is largely a time of heightened impact of common shocks— which accounts for 3/4 of aggregate volatility—and large spillovers of negative financerelated shocks. Moreover, in contrast with the earlier literature that failed to find a significant role of sectoral shocks (propagated through the input-output linkages across sectors) in driving variability in aggregate industry output, this study allows spillovers of shocks to operate through other mechanisms intertemporally. We find that prior to the recession the majority of aggregate fluctuations is explained by sector-specific shocks.

Book Fostering Monetary Financial Cooperation in East Asia

Download or read book Fostering Monetary Financial Cooperation in East Asia written by Duck-Koo Chung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Asian financial crisis of 1997OCo1998, there has been a deep and abiding desire on the part of Asian policy makers and opinion makers to enhance the region''s economic, monetary and financial self-sufficiency OCo or at least to ring-fence the region against financial instability and give it a louder voice in global financial affairs. There has been progress in these directions, notably in the form of the Chiang Mai Initiative of financial supports and the Asian Bond Market Initiative to build a single Asian financial market. But progress is hindered by disagreements among the principal national governments OCo Japan, China and South Korea OCo and resistance to the development of an Asian bloc from both Europe and the United States. This volume considers these issues from a number of different national and analytical perspectives. Scholars from all the relevant regions and countries are represented: Japan, China, Korea, Europe and the United States. While there have been a few previous books and articles concerned with the issue of Asian integration, this is one of the first volumes to successfully draw together top contributors from these different countries and regions to address the issues in a rigorous but relatively accessible way.

Book Counterparty Risk and Funding

Download or read book Counterparty Risk and Funding written by Stéphane Crépey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solve the DVA/FVA Overlap Issue and Effectively Manage Portfolio Credit Risk Counterparty Risk and Funding: A Tale of Two Puzzles explains how to study risk embedded in financial transactions between the bank and its counterparty. The authors provide an analytical basis for the quantitative methodology of dynamic valuation, mitigation, and hedging of bilateral counterparty risk on over-the-counter (OTC) derivative contracts under funding constraints. They explore credit, debt, funding, liquidity, and rating valuation adjustment (CVA, DVA, FVA, LVA, and RVA) as well as replacement cost (RC), wrong-way risk, multiple funding curves, and collateral. The first part of the book assesses today’s financial landscape, including the current multi-curve reality of financial markets. In mathematical but model-free terms, the second part describes all the basic elements of the pricing and hedging framework. Taking a more practical slant, the third part introduces a reduced-form modeling approach in which the risk of default of the two parties only shows up through their default intensities. The fourth part addresses counterparty risk on credit derivatives through dynamic copula models. In the fifth part, the authors present a credit migrations model that allows you to account for rating-dependent credit support annex (CSA) clauses. They also touch on nonlinear FVA computations in credit portfolio models. The final part covers classical tools from stochastic analysis and gives a brief introduction to the theory of Markov copulas. The credit crisis and ongoing European sovereign debt crisis have shown the importance of the proper assessment and management of counterparty risk. This book focuses on the interaction and possible overlap between DVA and FVA terms. It also explores the particularly challenging issue of counterparty risk in portfolio credit modeling. Primarily for researchers and graduate students in financial mathematics, the book is also suitable for financial quants, managers in banks, CVA desks, and members of supervisory bodies.

Book Aggregation and the Microfoundations of Dynamic Macroeconomics

Download or read book Aggregation and the Microfoundations of Dynamic Macroeconomics written by Mario Forni and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through careful methodological analysis, this book argues that modern macroeconomics has completely overlooked the aggregate nature of the data. In Part I, the authors test and reject the homogeneity assumption using disaggregate data. In Part II, they demonstrate that apart from random flukes, cointegration unidirectional Granger causality and restrictions on parameters do not survive aggregation when heterogeneity is introduced. They conclude that the claim that modern macroeconomics has solid microfoundations is unwarranted. However, some important theory-based models that do not fit aggregate data well in their representative-agent version can be reconciled with aggregate data by introducing heterogeneity.
