Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The heresy of heresies was common sense.” —George Orwell, 1984. This book is a defense of common-sense realism, which is the greatest heresy of our time. Following common-sense philosophers like Thomas Aquinas, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, Dallas Willard, and J. P. Moreland, this book defends a common-sense vision of reality within the Christian tradition. Mosteller shows how common-sense realism is more reasonable than the materialist, idealist, pragmatist, existentialist, and relativist spirits of our age. It maintains that we can know the nature of reality through common-sense experience and that this knowledge has profound implication for living the good life and being a good person.

Book The Apostle of Common Sense

Download or read book The Apostle of Common Sense written by Dale Ahlquist and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. K. Chesterton was one of the most well-known and beloved writers of his time. Yet he has been strangely neglected today. This book is the perfect introduction to Chesterton. Ahlquist is an able guide who takes the reader through twelve of Chesterton?s most important books as well as the famous Father Brown stories. One of the problems with approaching Chesterton is that he was so prolific that the reader is simply overwhelmed. But Ahlquist makes the literary giant accessible, highlighting Chesterton?s amazing reach, keen insight, and marvelous wit. Each chapter is liberally spiced with Chesterton?s striking quotations. There is something special that runs throughout Chesterton?s books that sets him apart from the confusing philosophies of the modern world. That common thread in Chesterton?s writings is common sense. It is instantly recognizable and utterly refreshing.

Book Lacan and Other Heresies

Download or read book Lacan and Other Heresies written by Linda Clifton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers together the recent writings of the analysts and members of the Freudian School of Melbourne and the Belgian analyst Christian Fierens, displaying the ongoing interrogation by the School of Lacanian psychoanalysis into its history, theories and practices. Within the framework of Lacan’s interventions in Freudian psychoanalysis, the book in particular highlights Lacan’s inventions in theoretical discourse and clinical practice, including the no-sexual relation, the discursive structures of language, the school, the cartel and the pass. Theoretical shibboleths such as the Oedipus complex are questioned, while the historical writings of Sabina Spielrein are read and interpreted anew. Chapters also engage with the psychoanalysis of children, the questions posed by the psychoses to psychoanalysis and the intersection of creativity and the arts in new and original ways. Bringing together a range of expert contributions, this text will be an illuminating resource for scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis.

Book Atheism Ayn Rand and Other Heresies

Download or read book Atheism Ayn Rand and Other Heresies written by George H. Smith and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging collection of articles, essays, and speeches, George H. Smith analyzes atheism and its relevance to society today. The featured essay in this volume provides a full analysis of Ayn Rand''s unique contribution to atheism, explaining how her objectivist metaphysics and laissez-faire economic principles rested on a purely godless worldview. Several chapters address the evolution of atheism; arguments in favor of religious toleration; the efforts of early Church fathers to discredit Roman polytheism and how these arguments can be used with equal force against later Christian descriptions of God; and a survey of the contributions to freethought made by the deists of the 18th and 19th centuries. With incisive logic and considerable wit, Smith ties atheism to reason and argues that reason itself can be a moral virtue. In one penetrating chapter, Smith salutes three Christian theorists who he believes embody the spirit of reason: Thomas Aquinas, Desiderius Erasmus, and John Locke. This is followed by a philosophical drubbing of his "least favorite Christians" - St. Paul, St. Augustine, and John Calvin. In subsequent chapters, Smith examines religion and education; addresses the 20th century fundamentalist revival; offers suggestions on how to debate atheism with religious believers; critiques "new religions," including pop therapy, est, and tranactional analysis; and provides a comprehensive bibliographic essay on the literature of freethought.

Book Common Sense in Early 18th Century British Literature and Culture

Download or read book Common Sense in Early 18th Century British Literature and Culture written by Christoph Henke and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the popular talk of English common sense in the eighteenth century might seem a by-product of familiar Enlightenment discourses of rationalism and empiricism, this book argues that terms such as ‘common sense’ or ‘good sense’ are not simply synonyms of applied reason. On the contrary, the discourse of common sense is shaped by a defensive impulse against the totalizing intellectual regimes of the Enlightenment and the cultural climate of change they promote, in order to contain the unbounded discursive proliferation of modern learning. Hence, common sense discourse has a vital regulatory function in cultural negotiations of political and intellectual change in eighteenth-century Britain against the backdrop of patriotic national self-concepts. This study discusses early eighteenth-century common sense in four broad complexes, as to its discursive functions that are ethical (which at that time implies aesthetic as well), transgressive (as a corrective), political (in patriotic constructs of the nation), and repressive (of otherness). The selection of texts in this study strikes a balance between dominant literary culture – Swift, Pope, Defoe, Fielding, Johnson – and the periphery, such as pamphlets and magazine essays, satiric poems and patriotic songs.
