Book We Cannot Win Overnight

Download or read book We Cannot Win Overnight written by Mujib Urrehman and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is based on the food security and livelihood status and the impact of development activities on the rural households in the Abbottabad district of North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. In the thesis, different methodological approaches are used including review and analyses of the available literature related to sustainable livelihoods, food security, natural resource management; historical reason of the under-development of the country and of the province particularly; a qualitative analysis of natural resource management and NGOs impact on development activities; quantitative analysis of households livelihoods status and livelihood strategies by gathering 500 questionnaires from 20 different villages; and logistic regression analysis of households preferences and attitudes towards natural resource management and community-based activities. The key findings of the study are: First, in the absence of well-developed physical and economic capital and to preserve the natural capital for sustainable use, the role of social capital is of vital importance. Both the qualitative and quantitative data suggests that the creation of social capital can ensure sustainable natural resource management and sustainable livelihood improvement activities. Second, management and livelihoods activities needs to be interrelated with each other as the area is pre-dominantly poor; and to involve poor in the management activities they needs incentive but on the other hand wealthy households are in much better position to participate in natural resource management activities because of both their economic status and comparatively making more out of the natural resources such as forests. Third, there are opportunities of off-farm and non-farm economic activities available in the area but needs proper support from the government and non-government Supporting Institutions. For this, provision of micro-credit to the poor households through community-based organizations and proper guidance and training for enterprise development and support till the marketing of the products is much needed for sustainable livelihoods.
