Download or read book The Spirit of Praise written by Monique M. Ingalls and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Spirit of Praise, Monique Ingalls and Amos Yong bring together a multidisciplinary, scholarly exploration of music and worship in global pentecostal-charismatic Christianity at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The Spirit of Praise contends that gaining a full understanding of this influential religious movement requires close listening to its songs and careful attention to its patterns of worship. The essays in this volume place ethnomusicological, theological, historical, and sociological perspectives into dialogue. By engaging with these disciplines and exploring themes of interconnection, interface, and identity within musical and ritual practices, the essays illuminate larger social processes such as globalization, sacralization, and secularization, as well as the role of religion in social and cultural change. Aside from the editors, the contributors are Peter Althouse, Will Boone, Mark Evans, Ryan R. Gladwin, Birgitta J. Johnson, Jean Ngoya Kidula, Miranda Klaver, Andrew Mall, Kimberly Jenkins Marshall, Andrew M. McCoy, Martijn Oosterbaan, Dave Perkins, Wen Reagan, Tanya Riches, Michael Webb, and Michael Wilkinson.

Book Anglicans and Pentecostals in Dialogue

Download or read book Anglicans and Pentecostals in Dialogue written by David Hilborn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book on Anglican and Pentecostal ecumenical relations. It introduces both movements with a particular focus on their approaches to ecumenism, before exploring sacraments, ministry, ecclesiology, pneumatology, and mission with respect to both traditions. As well as providing more theological and historical discussion, the book also offers personal accounts of local, national, and international ecumenical engagement by both Anglicans and Pentecostals. It is written predominantly—although not exclusively—from a British perspective. Even so, as the first major published dialogue between these two global Christian traditions, the book will be of value to all interested in Anglicanism, Pentecostalism, and ecumenism.

Book Pentecostal Theology and the Christian Spiritual Tradition

Download or read book Pentecostal Theology and the Christian Spiritual Tradition written by Simon Chan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the problem of Pentecostal 'traditioning'. Traditioning has been ineffective thus far because the richness of Pentecostal faith and experience has been inadequately captured in the classical Pentecostal doctrines of Spirit-baptism and glossolalia. A more adequate understanding of the key theological symbol of Pentecostalism, glossolalia, emerges when it is interpreted in the light of Christian spiritual tradition. Within this larger tradition glossolalia can be seen as bringing together both the ascetical and contemplative dimensions of the Christian life. Chan thus explores the shape of Pentecostal ecclesiology as 'traditioning community'.

Book The Social Life of Prayer

Download or read book The Social Life of Prayer written by Andreas Bandak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings the theme of prayer into anthropological discussion. Across diverse significant ethnographic case studies, five anthropologists attend to prayers and how they are performed and seen to intervene in the social world. The studies include Pentecostals in Zambia, Charismatic Christians in Ghana, Protestants in Scotland, Eastern Orthodox Christians in Romania, and Catholics in Syria. Across these ethnographic cases, the book argues that focusing on the social life of prayer offers a significant way to engage with matters close to people. Prayers are a way to map affect and the affective relationships people hold in what they are oriented towards and care about. Taking its cue from Marcel Mauss, the book invites us to go beyond the individual and see how prayers always point to a broader social landscape of obligation and affective investment. Focusing on the social life of prayers, the book posits, accordingly entices a particular form of situated comparison of diverse Christian traditions that pushes the scholarly conversation on Christianity to consider central questions of agency, responsibility and subjectivity. Taking up prayer as the object of study, this book offers novel anthropological perspectives on Christian life and practice. The chapters in this book were originally published a special issue of Religion.

Book Pentecostal Spirituality

Download or read book Pentecostal Spirituality written by Steven Jack Land and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic book, leading Pentecostal scholar Steven J. Land offers a constructive and controversial interpretation, a 're-vision', of the Pentecostal tradition. As Pentecostalism approaches its centennial, Land argues that the early years of the movement form the heart, not the infancy, of its spirituality, and he emphasizes the crucial importance of its Wesleyan, Holiness and nineteenth-century revivalist-restorationist roots. Land's foundational study includes - an account of the relationship of spirituality and theology - a description and analysis of Pentecostal beliefs and practices - a demonstration of how these beliefs and practices are integrated into Pentecostal affections - a trinitarian definition of Pentecostal Spirituality, arguing that a passion for the kingdom of God is ultimately a passion for God Himself
