Book When is True Belief Knowledge

Download or read book When is True Belief Knowledge written by Richard Foley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-22 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman glances at a broken clock and comes to believe it is a quarter past seven. Yet, despite the broken clock, it really does happen to be a quarter past seven. Her belief is true, but it isn't knowledge. This is a classic illustration of a central problem in epistemology: determining what knowledge requires in addition to true belief. In this provocative book, Richard Foley finds a new solution to the problem in the observation that whenever someone has a true belief but not knowledge, there is some significant aspect of the situation about which she lacks true beliefs--something important that she doesn't quite "get." This may seem a modest point but, as Foley shows, it has the potential to reorient the theory of knowledge. Whether a true belief counts as knowledge depends on the importance of the information one does or doesn't have. This means that questions of knowledge cannot be separated from questions about human concerns and values. It also means that, contrary to what is often thought, there is no privileged way of coming to know. Knowledge is a mutt. Proper pedigree is not required. What matters is that one doesn't lack important nearby information. Challenging some of the central assumptions of contemporary epistemology, this is an original and important account of knowledge.

Book Perception and Basic Beliefs

Download or read book Perception and Basic Beliefs written by Jack C Lyons and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2009-01-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that perceptual beliefs are epistemologically basic (noninferentially justifiable) and that a basic belief is one that results from a certain kind of cognitive module, of which perceptual modules are a special type. The result is a reliabilist epistemology that takes inferential justification seriously while remaining staunchly externalist.

Book The Cognitive Science of Belief

Download or read book The Cognitive Science of Belief written by Julien Musolino and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beliefs play a central role in our lives. They lie at the heart of what makes us human, they shape the organization and functioning of our minds, they define the boundaries of our culture, and they guide our motivation and behavior. Given their central importance, researchers across a number of disciplines have studied beliefs, leading to results and literatures that do not always interact. The Cognitive Science of Belief aims to integrate these disconnected lines of research to start a broader dialogue on the nature, role, and consequences of beliefs. It tackles timeless questions, as well as applications of beliefs that speak to current social issues. This multidisciplinary approach to beliefs will benefit graduate students and researchers in cognitive science, psychology, philosophy, political science, economics, and religious studies.

Book Popular Belief in Contemporary China

Download or read book Popular Belief in Contemporary China written by Monika Gaenssbauer and published by Projekt Verlag. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topic of this publication is "popular belief in contemporary China". It focuses on the positions of participants in the Chineselanguage discourse rather than taking the current state of research in the Western world as the starting point for its exploration. This study lays open the discursive thread in the People’s Republic of China about indigeneity and the critical reception by Chinese academics of Western research approaches. Many Chinese authors have begun to question the ability of Western theories to adequately explain phenomena in China. This book also deals with discursive strategies of Chinese academics aimed at the legitimation of popular belief and in support of a scientific treatment of popular belief in the People’s Republic of China. The author gives a comprehensive overview of the broad range of positions within this rapidly unfolding social and academic sphere.

Download or read book Unreal Beliefs written by Krzysztof Poslajko and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krzysztof Poslajko offers a novel version of an anti-realist view about beliefs, rejecting the extreme proposal of eliminativism that beliefs do not exist. He shows us we should rather say that beliefs exist, but they are not real. Poslajko demonstrates how we might make sense of this idea by providing a unified account of the debates in philosophical psychology. The antirealist view interprets beliefs as being causally irrelevant, that they do not constitute a natural kind, and that their content cannot be naturalized. Exploring the status of folk psychology, Poslajko raises key questions in the analytic metaphysics of mind: Are beliefs real? Do people really possess mental states which are causally efficacious bearers of propositional content? By arguing for the antirealist view and revising our common-sense view about the nature of mind, he makes a compelling case for adopting a pragmatic metaphilosophy when we deal with questions about belief.

Book Saving Belief

  • Author : Lynne Rudder Baker
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-14
  • ISBN : 1400886937
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Saving Belief written by Lynne Rudder Baker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stimulating book critically examines a wide range of physicalistic conceptions of mind in the works of Jerry A. Fodor, Stephen P. Stich, Paul M. Churchland, Daniel C. Dennett, and others. Part I argues that intentional concepts cannot be reduced to nonintentional (and nonsemantic) concepts; Part II argues that intentional concepts are nevertheless indispensable to our cognitive enterprises and thus need no foundation in physicalism. As a sustained challenge to the prevailing interpretation of cognitive science, this timely book fills a large gap in the philosophical literature. It is sure to spark controversy, yet its clarity makes it attractive as a text in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of mind and cognitive science. Saving Belief should be read by philosophers, psychologists, and others interested in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and cognitive science. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Belief Truth and Knowledge

Download or read book Belief Truth and Knowledge written by D. M. Armstrong and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1973-02-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging study of the central concepts in epistemology - belief, truth and knowledge. Professor Armstrong offers a dispositional account of general beliefs and of knowledge of general propositions. Belief about particular matters of fact are described as structures in the mind of the believer which represent or 'map' reality, while general beliefs are dispositions to extend the 'map' or introduce casual relations between portions of the map according to general rules. 'Knowledge' denotes the reliability of such beliefs as representations of reality. Within this framework Professor Armstrong offers a distinctive account of many of the main questions in general epistemology - the relations between beliefs and language, the notions of proposition, concept and idea, the analysis of truth, the varieties of knowledge, and the way in which beleifs and knowledge are supported by reasons. The book as a whole if offered as a contribution to a naturalistic account of man.
