Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Beetles of the British Uplands Beetles, like all other objects in nature, have their affinities, and have been divided by naturalists accord ing to those affinities into sections which correspond more or less with what we must believe to have been the course of their evolution in time. Now, it is not my desire, nor would it be consonant with the purpose of this little book, to weary the reader with the com plicated tables necessary to explain all these divisions but I think I may at least state that there are some eight major groups into which the order may in the first case be divided, and that these divisions depend principally on various structural differences of legs and antennae, as well as of habit. The first of these groups, the Adephaga, contains both land and water beetles; they all have long thin antenna of uniform thickness throughout, five joints to each tarsus (the tarsus being the last of the three sections of the leg, and analogous to our foot), they are rapid in movement and predaceous in habit. Some are represented on plate B., Fig. I, z, and 3. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common British Insects: Selected From the Typical Beetles, Moths, and Butterflies of Great Britain There is scarcely a branch of science, however interesting it may be, which does not at first repel the intending student by the array of strange words with which the treasures of knowledge are surrounded. This is especially the case in Botany and Zoology, which contain, in addition to the usual technical language, vast numbers of names belonging to various plants or animals, each name consisting of two words, one denoting the genus and the other the species. In the following pages I intend to describe, as far as possible within so limited a space, the butter ies moths, and beetles of Great Britain, and, though giving the needful scientific information, to use few technical terms, and always to explain those which of necessity must be employed. Our first business is evidently, when treating of these insects, to define precisely what an insect is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carabidae form one of the largest and best studied families of insects, occurring in nearly every terrestrial habitat. The contributions included in this book cover a broad spectrum of recent research into this beetle family, with an emphasis on various aspects of ecology and evolution. They deal both with individual carabid species, for example in studies on population and reproductive biology or life history in general, and with ground beetle communities, as exemplified in papers treating assemblages in natural habitats, on agricultural land and in forests. Disciplines range from biogeography and faunistics, over morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, ecophysiology and functional ecology, to population, community, conservation and landscape ecology. This volume is the result of the 8th European Carabidologists' Meeting, 2nd International Symposium of Carabidology, September 1-4, 1992, Belgium.
