Book Principles of Commodity Economics and Finance

Download or read book Principles of Commodity Economics and Finance written by Daniel P. Ahn and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous but practical introduction to the economic, financial, and political principles underlying commodity markets. Commodities have become one of the fastest growing asset classes of the last decade and the object of increasing attention from investors, scholars, and policy makers. Yet existing treatments of the topic are either too theoretical, ignoring practical realities, or largely narrative and nonrigorous. This book bridges the gap, striking a balance between theory and practice. It offers a solid foundation in the economic, financial, and political principles underlying commodities markets. The book, which grows out of courses taught by the author at Columbia and Johns Hopkins, can be used by graduate students in economics, finance, and public policy, or as a conceptual reference for practitioners. After an introduction to basic concepts and a review of the various types of commodities—energy, metals, agricultural products—the book delves into the economic and financial dynamics of commodity markets, with a particular focus on energy. The text covers fundamental demand and supply for resources, the mechanics behind commodity financial markets, and how they motivate investment decisions around both physical and financial portfolio exposure to commodities, and the evolving political and regulatory landscape for commodity markets. Additional special topics include geopolitics, financial regulation, and electricity markets. The book is divided into thematic modules that progress in complexity. Text boxes offer additional, related material, and numerous charts and graphs provide further insight into important concepts.

Book Commodity Treatments

Download or read book Commodity Treatments written by Werner J. Lipton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commodity Treatments: Responses of Tomatoes and Green Bell Peppers to Fumigation With Methyl Bromide or Ethylene Dibromide Tomatoes with a high decay potential should not be fumigated with MB because the treatment sometimes increases susceptibility of the fruit to decay. Although this effect is not consistently observed, it is important in lots of tomatoes that have cracks or that have been physically injured (7) or in lots that have suffered chilling injury before or after harvest Consequently, no attempt should be made to ship tomatoes with a high decay potential out of a quarantined area. The consistency of the results reported here with those reported in the literature suggests that diverse cultivars of tomatoes react similarly to fumigation with me. Thus, a continued, extensive program of evaluation should not be necessary as new cultivars are released. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an essential resource, water has been the object of warfare, political wrangling, and individual and corporate abuse. It has also become an object of commodification, with multinational corporations vying for water supply contracts in many countries. In Precious Commodity, Martin V. Melosi examines water resources in the United States and addresses whether access to water is an inalienable right of citizens, and if government is responsible for its distribution as a public good. Melosi provides historical background on the construction, administration, and adaptability of water supply and wastewater systems in urban America. He cites budgetary constraints and the deterioration of existing water infrastructures as factors leading many municipalities to seriously consider the privatization of their water supply. Melosi also views the role of government in the management of, development of, and legal jurisdiction over America's rivers and waterways for hydroelectric power, flood control, irrigation, and transportation access. Looking to the future, he compares the costs and benefits of public versus private water supply, examining the global movement toward privatization.
