Download or read book Commodity Derivative Market and its Impact on Spot Market written by Golaka C. Nath and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation wide trading in commodities futures in India was introduced for many agricultural commodities and later trading in futures was banned for few commodities due to pressure on spot prices of these commodities. The paper studies the impact of futures trading in three important commodities which were banned by the government from trading in futures and their impact on spot prices. The study uses simple linear regressions, correlations, Granger Causality tests to find the answer. The study also tries to find if the seasonal/cyclical fluctuations in these commodities prices have been affected by the introduction of futures in those commodities. Hodrick-Prescott filter is used to differentiate the general trend and seasonal/cyclical fluctuations in prices. The study finds that in India future trading in the selected commodities had apparently led to increase in prices of commodities like urad. It also increased the volatilities in the spot market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spot and Future Trading in Commodity Derivatives Market, explores the dynamics and behavior of selected commodities in the context of both spot and future trading. Commodity derivatives markets play a crucial role in modern economies, providing essential instruments for managing price volatility and hedging risks related to various commodities. This research delves into the complexities of spot trading, where commodities are bought and sold for immediate delivery, as well as future trading, which involves contracts for the future delivery of commodities at predetermined prices. By focusing on specific commodities, the study aims to offer valuable insights into their supply and demand dynamics, pricing patterns, and how market participants use derivative instruments to manage their exposures. Through a combination of data analysis, market observations, and financial models, the study seeks to highlight the relationships between spot and future prices, as well as the impact of various market factors on both segments. Additionally, the research may investigate the role of speculation and the behavior of traders in influencing price movements in these commodity markets. The findings of this are expected to contribute to a better understanding of commodity derivatives markets, their functioning, and their implications for traders, producers, and consumers alike. Furthermore, the research may provide practical implications and recommendations for market participants seeking to make informed decisions related to commodity trading, risk management, and investment strategies.

Book Spot Market

Book excerpt: What is Spot Market The spot market, often known as the cash market, is a public financial market that facilitates the acquisition and sale of financial instruments or commodities for immediate delivery. On the other hand, a futures market, in which delivery is scheduled for a later date, is not the same thing. The settlement process in a spot market typically takes place in T+2 working days, which means that the delivery of cash and commodities must be completed after two working days have passed since the date of the trade. An exchange or an over-the-counter (OTC) market are both viable options for using a spot market. Spot markets are able to function in any location where the necessary infrastructure is present to carry out the transaction. Book Effect of Futures Trading on Spot Market Volatility

Download or read book Effect of Futures Trading on Spot Market Volatility written by Brajesh Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationship between futures trading activity and spot market volatility for agricultural, metal, precious metals and energy commodities in Indian commodity derivatives market. This article contributes to the debate whether the futures trading in Indian commodity futures market stabilizes or destabilizes spot market. We explore this issue by modeling contemporaneous as well as dynamic relationship between spot volatility and futures trading activity including trading volume (speculative/day trading) and open interest (hedging). Following Bessembinder and Senguin (1992), we examine contemporaneous relationship through augmented GARCH model in which spot volatility is modeled as GARCH (1,1) process and trading activity is used as explanatory variable. We also decompose futures trading volume and open interest series into expected and unexpected component. The lead-lag relationship between spot price volatility and futures trading volume and open interest is investigated through VAR model. Granger causality tests, forecast error variance decompositions and impulse response function are used to understand the dynamic relationship between these variables. We found that both expected and unexpected futures trading volume affects contemporaneous spot volatility positively. However, in case of agricultural commodities only unexpected volume affects the contemporaneous spot volatility. Granger causality tests, forecast error variance decompositions and impulse response function confirm that the lagged unexpected volatility causes spot price volatility for all commodities. The effect of speculative/day trading activity measured by trading volume on spot market volatility is positive. However, hedging activity measured by open interest does not show significant effect on spot market volatility. We do not find any effect of spot volatility on futures trading activity for most of the commodities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications, Neil Schofield provides a complete and accessible reference for anyone working in, or studying commodity markets and their associated derivatives. Using structures unique to the individual market, each chapter includes an explanation of the commodity and an analysis of its physical market, discussion on the typical patterns of demand and supply and the main factors that will influence the price of the commodity, and the main products. Each chapter focuses on how the products could be used along the physical supply chain and seeks to identify the main market risks and how they can be hedged. The book then brings into perspective how the structuring banks hedge their own resultant exposure and examines the attraction of OTC investment structures for the wholesale market. Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications is essential reading for those wishing to learn about the main features of the commodity markets, the mechanics of derivatives, and how they are applied.

Book Commodity Derivatives

Download or read book Commodity Derivatives written by Paul E. Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodity Derivatives: A Guide for Future Practitioners describes the origins and uses of these important markets. Commodities are often used as inputs in the production of other products, and commodity prices are notoriously volatile. Derivatives include forwards, futures, options, and swaps; all are types of contracts that allow buyers and sellers to establish the price at one time and exchange the commodity at another. These contracts can be used to establish a price now for a purchase or sale that will occur later, or establish a price later for a purchase or sale now. This book provides detailed examples for using derivatives to manage prices by hedging, using futures, options, and swaps. It also presents strategies for using derivatives to speculate on price levels, relationships, volatility, and the passage of time. Finally, because the relationship between a commodity price and a derivative price is not constant, this book examines the impact of basis behaviour on hedging results, and shows how the basis can be bought and sold like a commodity. The material in this book is based on the author’s 30-year career in commodity derivatives, and is essential reading for students planning careers as commodity merchandisers, traders, and related industry positions. Not only does it provide them with the necessary theoretical background, it also covers the practical applications that employers expect new hires to understand. Examples are coordinated across chapters using consistent prices and formats, and industry terminology is used so students can become familiar with standard terms and concepts. This book is organized into 18 chapters, corresponding to approximately one chapter per week for courses on the semester system.

Book Impact of U S Financial Market Deregulation on Commodity Derivatives Market

Download or read book Impact of U S Financial Market Deregulation on Commodity Derivatives Market written by Velmurugan Palaniappan Shanmugam and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With due credit to the globalized interlinked economy, the international linkages, information transmission, and the spillover effect from one futures market to other markets across the world is well researched and documented. Especially several studies on equity, currency, and commodity markets have documented the dominance of U.S markets in innovation and information dissemination to the rest to the world. The information of price, market return and volatility that is prevailing in U.S market is no more a domestic issue since it gets incorporated into international commodity futures markets immediately without sparing any lead-lag relationship. As US is the birthplace of several financial market and regulatory innovations, the entire world is looking at it for taking corrective measures. To conclude, it is not the failure of the derivatives market but it is the failure of the regulatory mechanism that have created turmoil in the market. The policy makers should understand that it is in their hands to design a regulatory architecture taking into account the developments and experiences during the first few years of the market - good and bad - and literally shape the financial and commodity market system that forms the foundation for the future of futures market.

Book Financial Markets for Commodities

Download or read book Financial Markets for Commodities written by Joel Priolon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural, energy or mineral commodities are traded internationally in two market categories: physical markets and financial markets. More specifically, on the financial markets, contracts are negotiated, the price of which depends on the price of a commodity. These contracts are called derivatives (futures, options contracts, swaps). This book presents, on the one hand, the characteristics of these derivatives and the markets on which they are traded and, on the other hand, those transactions that typically combine an action on the physical market and a transaction on the corresponding financial market. The understanding of commodity financial markets mainly relies on the resources of economic analysis, especially the financial economy, because the use of this discipline is essential to understanding the major operations that are conducted daily by the operators of these markets: traders, producers, processors, financiers.

Book Impacts of Derivative Markets on Spot Market Volatility and Their Persistence

Download or read book Impacts of Derivative Markets on Spot Market Volatility and Their Persistence written by Chulwoo Han and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article, I investigate the impacts of futures and options markets on the volatility of the underlying market with a focus on their persistence over time. Empirical study yields several interesting results that often contrast with previous findings. it suggests that the impacts on the spot market volatility depends on the quality of new information generated by derivatives trading. Futures market reduces spot market volatility by providing new, material information, but options market generates noisy information which results in increase in volatility and decrease in its sensitivity to price change. While the impact by futures persists, that of options mostly disappears as the market matures. This is perhaps because futures market is mainly driven by informed, experienced participants, while options market attracts new, inexperienced investors. It would be worth revisiting other markets with the methods in this study and testing validity of the conclusions made in previous studies.
