Download or read book Strategic export controls written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government published a consultation document "Export Control Act 2002: 2007 review of export control legislation" in June 2007 (further details can be accessed at http://www.berr.gov.uk/consultations/page39910.html). This report contains the Quadripartite Committee's own review of export control legislation, along with its response to the Government's consultation document. The Committee concludes that the Export Control Act 2002 has provided a sound legislative basis for controlling and regulating the UK's strategic exports but with gaps and shortcomings. It also welcomes the Government's review as a constructive process that addresses many of the issues the Committee and other parties have raised over several years, and praises the improvement in the volume and quantity of information that the Government provides. But the review does not mention HM Revenue and Customs, the department that enforces the controls; and it ignores the EU dimension despite a significant part of the export control regime being derived from EU legislation. The Committee makes nearly 100 recommendations and observations on the review and the operation and effectiveness of the UK export control legislation.
Download or read book The Northern Ireland Prison Service written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With around 1500 prisoners and an estate of three prisons, the Northern Ireland Prison Service is a very small prison service. This inquiry was undertaken to examine whether the estate was adequate and appropriate for the secure accommodation of Northern Ireland's prisoners and whether the Prison Service meets the health, education and training needs of prisoners. One of the main conclusions is that the Current Comprehensive Spending Review does not provide sufficient capital for the substantial redesign of the prison estate. If criminal justice is to be devolved the Committee hope that capital investment in the prison estate will be a priority of the Northern Ireland Executive. If not the Secretary of State will have to argue for an increase in funding.
Download or read book Greening Government 2004 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environmental Audit Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase greening government was coined by the Committee to describe the objective of ensuring environmental concerns are incorporated into all aspects of government policy, in terms of appraisal and development, as well as in operational aspects of departmental performance (such as recycling waste and reducing energy consumption). Following on from the Committee's previous report on the Greening Government Initiative (HCP 961, session 2002-03; ISBN 0215013786) (November 2003), this report focuses on the progress made during the period from April 2002 to March 2003. The Committee concludes that, although progress continues to be made in some areas, there is a perceptible loss of overall momentum, particularly in embedding sustainable development within government policy making.
