Book The Banks and the Monetary System in the UK 1959 1971

Download or read book The Banks and the Monetary System in the UK 1959 1971 written by J.E. Wadsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Monetary Surveys published in the Midland Bank Review have become an established and authoritative source of reference for all students of money and banking and related topics, and for those concerned with general economics and current affairs. This superb volume brings together reprints of these Surveys with a selection of special articles published in the Review since the 1959 Radcliffe Report on the working of the monetary system. In his introduction the editor discusses in outline Britain’s financial dilemma. The period covered is an interesting and exciting one{emru}economic conditions in the UK were swinging from achievement in the early 19605 to near calamity, and in the international monetary field policy moved from convertibility for current transactions through tighter restrictions and devaluation, to the experiments of 1971. The book is set out in four sections. The first section contains articles dealing mainly with official activities in the management of government debt, of the money supply, and of the banking system. In the second section are five articles describing and analysing London’s money market operations, and examining the swift growth of non-bank financial intermediaries and the markets in which they are active, including the Eurodollar market. These are followed by the annual Monetary Surveys for the years 1959 to 1971, which tell the story of the struggle to preserve the parity of sterling, the devaluation of 1967, and the consequences for Britain’s position at home and abroad; they also record developments in banking and the first effects of the new methods of credit control. The final section of appendices presents up-to-date statistics and charts and relevant documents illustrating the monetary and economic background of the period covered. This excellent text was first published in 1973.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential origin story of modern society’s most influential economic doctrine. The Chicago School of economic thought has been subject to endless generalizations—and mischaracterizations—in contemporary debate. What is often portrayed as a monolithic obsession with markets is, in fact, a nuanced set of economic theories born from decades of research and debate. The Monetarists is a deeply researched history of the monetary policies—and personalities—that codified the Chicago School of monetary thought from the 1930s through the 1960s. These policies can be characterized broadly as monetarism: the belief that prices and interest rates can be kept stable by controlling the amount of money in circulation. As economist George S. Tavlas makes clear, these ideas were more than just the legacy of Milton Friedman; they were a tradition in theory brought forth by a crucible of minds and debates throughout campus. Through unprecedented mining of archival material, The Monetarists offers the first complete history of one of the twentieth century’s most formative intellectual periods and places. It promises to elevate our understanding of this doctrine and its origins for generations to come.

Book Post Keynesian Monetary Economics

Download or read book Post Keynesian Monetary Economics written by Rousseas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past five years, crises in the US savings and loan industry, commercial banks, and other financial institutions have borne out the ideas that Rousseas expressed in the first edition. His main theme stresses the role of innovation in the financial sector of the economy and its implications for control of the money supply and credit, as well as the larger issue of macroeconomic policy. He holds a Post-Keynesian view of an elastic and endogenous money supply that is largely founded on the "general liquidity thesis" of the Radcliffe Committee. Indeed, the elasticity of the credit structure is even greater than the Radcliffe Committee originally claimed. Tables and charts are revised through 1990, and the text has been revised accordingly. An expanded preface to the revised edition makes this book very relevant to contemporary problems and policy.

Book Back to the future of Socialism

Download or read book Back to the future of Socialism written by Hain, Peter and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's gone wrong with capitalism and how should governments respond? Did Big Government or Big Banking cause the global financial crisis? Is the answer austerity or investment in growth; untrammelled market forces or regulating for the common good? Anthony CroslandÕs The Future of Socialism (1956) provided a creed for governments of the centre left until the global banking crisis. Now Peter Hain, with over 50 yearsÕ experience in politics, revisits this classic text and presents a stimulating political prospectus for today. Hain argues that capitalism is now more financially unstable and unfair, productive but prone to paralysis, dynamic but discriminatory. A rousing alternative to the neoliberal, right-wing orthodoxy of our era, HainÕs new book should be read by everyone interested in the future of the left.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international symposium on Monetary Conditions for Economic Recovery was organised in Amsterdam from 14-16 November 1984 by the Department of Macroeconomics, Faculty of Economics of the University of Amsterdam, to honour its distinguished member, Professor G. A. Kessler, who had recently retired from his Chair of Monetary Econo mics. Experts on monetary theory and monetary policy from various parts of the world took part in the discussions on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the theme. The papers have been collected in this volume. Our debts in organizing the symposium and preparing this volume for publication are many. The symposium was financed through the support of a number of sponsors whose names have been listed on the next page. The Netherlands Bank accommodated the conference sessions. The organizing Committee owes much to the successful efforts of its members Jean Morreau, Casper van Ewijk and Annette Deckers. We are grateful to the President of the Netherlands Bank for his intro ductory speech on the work of Professor Kessler, which is included in this volume. Wouter Zant assisted in editing the volume for publication.

Book Giro Credit Transfer Systems

Download or read book Giro Credit Transfer Systems written by F. P. Thomson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giro Credit Transfer Systems: Popular International Facilities for Economic Efficiency presents the financial, economic, and social system that has been a successful part of everyday life in nearly every West European country. This book discusses the remarkable benefits conferred by the giro system methods. Organized into six chapters, this book begins with an overview of the origin of the credit transfer principle to minimize the public's demand for coinage. This text then explains the financial system in which credit circulation takes the place of banknotes and coinage. Other chapters consider the implications of a comprehensive giro system, which is necessary to analyze the processes and costs incurred in operating British monetary transmission methods. This book discusses as well the general survey of the growth of the service. The final chapter deals with the establishment of the bank's credit transfer scheme. This book is a valuable resource for bankers and stockbrokers.
