Book Precaution Environmental Science and Preventive Public Policy

Download or read book Precaution Environmental Science and Preventive Public Policy written by Joel Tickner and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "precautionary principle"—the idea that society should guard against potentially harmful activities even if some cause and effect relationships have not been fully established—has often been attacked for being unscientific. However leading scientists studying the issue have begun to make the case that the precautionary principle is in fact science based, and that it creates a need for more rigorous and transparent science in examining complex and uncertain environmental risks.Precaution, Environmental Science, and Preventive Public Policy is the first book to explore the role of science in developing a more precautionary approach to environmental and public health policy. The book brings together leading scientists, legal experts, philosophers, environmental health professionals, and environmentalists to offer a multi-disciplinary perspective on the controversial debate over science and precaution. The book:discusses the critical need for science in promoting sustainabilityoutlines the ethical imperative of a more precautionary science and the philosophical foundations of that new approachconsiders some of the ways in which the current conduct of environmental science works against precautionary policiesexamines how the role and use of science differs across cultures and political systemsprovides the components of an approach to environmental science that more effectively supports precautionary decisionsThe book also offers case studies that consider various types of uncertainty and sets forth a framework for evaluating and addressing uncertainty in decision-making.Contributors include Juan Almendares, Katherine Barrett, Kamaljit Bawa, Finn Bro-Rasmussen, Donald Brown, Theofanis Christoforou, Terry Collins, Barry Commoner, Carl Cranor, Stephen Dovers, David Gee, Elizabeth Guillette, Cato ten Hallers-Tjabbes, James Huff, Matthias Kaiser, Richard Levins, Mary O'Brien, Carolyn Raffensperger, Jerry Ravetz, Vandana Shiva, Boyce Thorne-Miller, Joe Thornton, Reginald Victor, and Alistair Woodward.Precaution, Environmental Science, and Preventive Public Policy presents a broad overview of the role of science in implementing the precautionary principle and makes a compelling case that science should be used not just to study problems but to develop solutions.

Book Solid Waste Assessment Monitoring and Remediation

Download or read book Solid Waste Assessment Monitoring and Remediation written by I. Twardowska and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2004-04-22 with total page 1161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a broad group of wastes, from biowaste to hazardous waste, but primarily the largest (by mass and volume) group of wastes that are not hazardous, but also are not inert, and are problematic for three major reasons: (1) they are difficult to manage because of their volume: usually they are used in civil engineering as a common fill etc., where they are exposed to environmental conditions almost the same way as at disposal sites; (2) they are not geochemically stable and in the different periods of environmental exposure undergo transformations that might add hazardous properties to the material that are not displayed when it is freshly generated; (3) many designers and researchers in different countries involved in waste management are often not aware of time-delayed adverse environmental impact of some large-volume waste, and also do not consider some positive properties that may extend the area of their environmentally beneficial application.

Book E U Sales Directive

Download or read book E U Sales Directive written by C. Massimo Bianca and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2002 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European standards of interpretation (including interpretation of comparative law) and reference to the directive and to instruments of European law are now part of sound legal practice even in the most routine of domestic cases. The huge reforms in many national laws, in some countries the rewriting of their Code to reflect the Directive, is no more than good approximation. What really matters and what ultimately will be the decisive standard is the Directive. The Geneva Conventions on bills of exchange and cheques, the Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods and the Brussels Convention on jurisdiction and recognition of judgments were milestones. They did not, however, influence national private law in its core area as profoundly and as extensively as the EU Sales Law Directive will. This book starts off by explaining the instruments of European law and their influence on national law and lays solid foundations for a thorough transnational understanding of every single pro-vision of the directive. Also discussed are the philosophical, historical and economic foundations of the different rules, which are followed by a detailed commentary on each individual article. Contributions to this book are made by C.M. Bianca, M. Bridge, W. van Gerven, F. Gomez, S. Grundmann, E. Hondius, P. Malinvaud, A.L. Serrano, P. Sirena and S. Stijns.

Book EU Food Law

Download or read book EU Food Law written by K Goodburn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given its fragmented development, EU food law can be seen as both complex and confusing. With its distinguished team of contributors, EU food law highlights the key issues so those non-specialists can understand the legislation and what it means for them. It is designed to help readers ask the right questions when developing and marketing products in the European Union, and to provide answers to those questions. The book begins with an overview of the development of EU food law, and then describes the main institutions involved in framing food legislation and the legislative process. This discussion is designed to provide a context for the chapters on specific aspects of EU food law that follow. Part one there are a series of chapters on legislation controlling food safety, ranging from the way food products are manufactured (hygiene and the control of contaminants) to food composition and packaging (additives and food contact materials). Part two considers how EU food law ensures that consumers are properly informed about the food products they buy. There are chapters on labelling, nutrition information, the increasingly important area of health claims, and the handling of foods for particular nutritional purposes. Part three of the book contains two case studies illustrating how these various strands of EU food law impact in practice on a particular food product, looking at both an established food ingredient and the emerging area of functional foods.EU food law provides an authoritative introduction and guide to a complex subject. It will be widely welcomed by all those designing food products for and selling food products in the European Union.

Book Fundamental Texts on European Private Law

Download or read book Fundamental Texts on European Private Law written by Oliver Radley-Gardner KC and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 1651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most significant legal developments of our time is the emergence of a European private law. The European Union has enacted regulations and directives which profoundly affect the practice, teaching and study of core areas of 'classical' private law. Within Europe, commissions have formulated principles of European contract, tort, family and insolvency law as well as aspects of commercial law. Furthermore, uniform private law can be found in a number of international conventions and sets of principles. This second edition gathers together fundamental texts from these three sources into one convenient volume. Its emphasis is on general civil and commercial law, particularly on the obligations and property aspects of these. This second edition is a sister volume to the original German edition, now in its 5th edition.

Download or read book Expanding the Scope of the EuP Directive written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the documentation from the project "Expanding the Scope of the EuP Directive", financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers for the Environment. The project was kick-started by the adoption the ErP Directive (Directive 2009/125/EC). The recast means that Energy-related Products now are included in the scope of the. With this expansion of the scope to energy related products, focus is put on interesting issues, which have already been discussed in relation to Sustainable Consumption and Production in the EU. This concern: How can a common information platform be ensured, which can feed the setting of requirements for both energy- and eco-labelling, green procurement guidelines and performance requirements in for instance the ErP Directive? How is an optimal synergy between the minimum performance requirements in the ErP Directive, the energy labelling of all products and incentives for front-runner companies through eco-labels? The aim of this project was to organise a Workshop on Ecodesign and Resource Efficiency. The intention was to bring leading experts and other interested stakeholders together to discuss these issues. The Nordic perspective of the conference should be a common understanding of (1) how the ErP Directive and especially the Implementing measures could be changed to include more environmental requirements than just energy efficiency, (2) how the different ecodesign directives can supplement each other, (3) how a common information platform for IPP instruments can be realised and (4) how a synergy between minimum performance standards and energy- and ecolabels can be established.

Download or read book Migration Law in Albania written by Erjona Bana (Canaj) and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this monograph on the rules on immigration and right of residence of non-nationals in Albania examines the legal and administrative conditions for persons not having the citizenship of a State to enter the country and to stay and reside there. It provides a survey of the subject that is both usefully brief and sufficiently detailed to answer most questions likely to arise in any pertinent legal setting. It follows the common structure of all monographs appearing in the International Encyclopaedia for Migration Law, thus allowing easy comparison between the country studies. As migration and economic activities are often interlinked, the analysis pays particular attention to labour market access and regulation of self-employed activities for non-nationals. The book describes the status of such specific categories of persons as students, researchers, temporary workers, and asylum seekers, as well as the position of family members, detailing applicable legislation and providing practical information on administrative procedures, sanctions, and legal remedies and guarantees. The impact of international human rights law and various bilateral and multilateral agreements is considered, along with the broader application of national and local law to non-citizens in such areas as family relations, labour, social security, and education. Lawyers, scholars, practitioners, policymakers, government administrations, and non-governmental organizations involved in the development, practice and study of migration law will find this book indispensable. It will be welcomed by lawyers representing parties with interests in Albania and immigration specialists in both public and private organizations. Academics and researchers also will appreciate its value in the study of comparative trends and harmonization initiatives affecting migrants.

Book European Energy Policy

Download or read book European Energy Policy written by Francesc Morata and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book analyses a highly important topic. It is based on a comprehensive and empirically rich assessment of European energy policy, including both internal and external determinants. Its encompassing approach and the thoughtful combination of different analytical perspectives makes the book an important and fresh contribution to the field.' Christoph Knill, University of Konstanz, Germany 'Energy was one of the founding pillars of European integration, while environmental concerns have become an identity sign of today's European Union energy policy. However, notwithstanding the obvious links between both issues, little attention has been devoted to the complex relationship between the EU's environmental performance and the Europeanization of its energy policy. This book, carefully edited by Morata and Solorio, has come to fill this gap becoming a "must" to understand the interactions between these two fundamental drivers of EU policies.' José María Marín-Quemada, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, and Member of the Governing Council of the Spanish Central Bank, Spain This path-breaking book explores the new European energy policy, highlighting the significance of environmental policy concerns, instruments, and objectives vis-à-vis competing security and market dimensions in order to achieve an all-embracing EU energy policy perspective for the future. While the past years have witnessed unprecedented development of EU energy policy, the understanding of this process has lagged behind. Alongside the scarce literature on this emergent policy, there is also a gap regarding the attention paid to its different components. The study stems from the perception of a mismatch between the valuable debate that certain dimensions of energy policy namely, energy security and the market and competition framework have triggered and the neglect of its environmental and climate change dimensions. European Energy Policy will prove to be insightful for academics and postgraduate students interested in European integration, political science, international relations, public policy and environmental science. Energy stakeholders and governmental policymakers will also find plenty of invaluable information in this enriching resource.
