Book Accelerating Clean Energy Technology Research Development and Deployment

Download or read book Accelerating Clean Energy Technology Research Development and Deployment written by Patrick Avato and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the key challenges of this century. At the same time, energy use the primary source of climate-altering global greenhouse gas emissions is increasing at unprecedented rates and is vital to the continued economic growth of developing countries. This poses a serious dilemma that can only be reconciled with new and improved clean energy technologies that balance climate change mitigation and increased energy needs in developing countries. Despite a recent increase in investment, public and private research, development, and deployment (RD&D) funding rates are well below historical levels. In addition, significant barriers impede the ability to develop new technologies, such as the uncertain future value of CO2 emissions, intellectual property rights issues, limited incentives to commercialize technologies for developing countries, and challenges with technology transfer. These factors must be overcome to accelerate innovation in the energy sector. To introduce new thinking to address these concerns, this report examines four cases from outside the energy sector where creative approaches to RD&D have successfully overcome similar barriers. The case studies review approaches to innovation by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, Advanced Market Commitments for Vaccines, the Human Genome Project, and the concept of Distributed Innovation. These case studies show how creative efforts can generate valuable public goods via: (i) international partnerships between public and private actors, (ii) information sharing and intellectual property rights, and (iii) novel financing schemes.

Book Sub Saharan renewable energy Assessing strategies and interconnections of producers

Download or read book Sub Saharan renewable energy Assessing strategies and interconnections of producers written by Jobaire Alam and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: B, Aalborg University, language: English, abstract: This study is going to examine the implementation of two renewable electrification technologies; solar PV and wind. In this proposal, literature review section presents a short and clear understanding of previous researches around this topic. This study intends to adopt qualitative method with PESTEL and multi criteria analysis. According to the expected result, this project is aiming to establish policies that contribute to universal energy access and reduction of energy poverty in Kenya. Renewable energy systems have been identified as key driver of sustainability and economic development. Kenya, among the Sub-Saharan countries is considered as one of the frontrunners for catalyzing economic growth by the development of their energy sectors. There are lots of potentials for solar energy in Kenya and it has one of the most active commercial Solar PV sectors in the developing world. Renewable energy technologies have been clearly identified as a key stagnation of sustainability and economic development. Modern energy systems affect the quality of life and supports three pillars of sustainable development: social equality, economic growth and environmental protection, which are very significant concerns in developing countries. As elsewhere, in Sub-Saharan African countries there is a high correlation between low per capita consumption of commercial energy and low per capita gross domestic products. In a continent where both per capita income and energy consumption are tragically low, renewable energy could be a valuable contribution to economic growth. Several developing countries among in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are considered as frontrunners for catalyzing economic growth by the development of their energy sectors. These are Ethiopia, Kenya, Benin, Malawi, Ghana, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Lack of access to affordable electricity is a major determinant of poverty in SSA. Urban populations remain underserved by inefficient, unreliable systems, while many rural villagers have no access to electricity except for power provided to relatively affluent households by small, privately owned generators.

This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by economic, political, and environmental dynamics, the path towards achieving sustainability in energy supply on a global scale is one of the key challenges for the twenty-first century. Within this long-term transition process, the transformation of the current energy sector has been identified as a key challenge for a sustainable energy future, which implies that incumbent firms in the two major energy industries (oil-gas and electricity) have a vital role in the development and commercialization process of renewable energy technologies. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has seen the most extensive growth over the last decade compared to other renewable energy technologies, and has been identified as a key technology for a sustainable energy future. This study analyzes the role of incumbent firms in the energy industries in the development and commercialization of solar PV technology, as their powerful position in the energy industry gives them a crucial position in the diffusion process of renewable energy technologies. It provides a comparative analysis of strategies regarding solar PV investments, based on in-depth case studies of Europe's leading energy companies.

Book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development

Download or read book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development written by Alexander Zahnd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis documents almost twenty years of the author’s work on the development and implementation of a new approach to holistic community development in remote and disadvantaged villages in Nepal. It describes the theoretical basis of the work, the main research activities, and the practical outcomes of the implemented programs. One of the fundamental cornerstones of holistic community development is the provision of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the long-term development of local communities. This requires that people’s own identified needs be recognized and addressed in partnership with them in holistic ways. The author explains the many synergies that result from this holistic approach to community development. Another cornerstone of his approach is to utilise the communities’ locally available renewable resources for long-term sustainable development. One of the key findings of the thesis is that improved access to energy services, such as cooking with a smokeless metal stove in a clean indoor environment, basic indoor lighting, and increased food production and safe food storage (through a greenhouse and a solar drier respectively), need to be at the very heart of any long-term holistic community development project. The thesis demonstrates that tapping into locally available renewable energy resources and converting them, through contextualized and locally manufactured renewable energy technologies, has a central role in long-term holistic community development programs. Such programs are successful because they provide both appropriate technologies and life-changing experiences for the local users involved.
