This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Agrarwissenschaften, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This review is done on comparative evaluation of production and reproduction performances and constraints of local and exotic layer chicken in Ethiopia. Poultry is by far the largest group of livestock species in the world and chicken largely dominate flock composition. In Ethiopia; except chickens other poultry species production is not practicing that they are living in their natural habitat. The poultry sector in Ethiopia can be characterized into three major production systems based on some selected parameters such as breed, flock size, housing, feed, health, technology and bio-security. These are large commercial or intensive, small scale commercial or semi-intensive and free range or village back yard poultry production system. However, the majority of chicken production system in Ethiopia remains as village or back scavenging system which consist the indigenous chickens as major. In Ethiopia, poultry industry plays a significant role in the supply of human food (eggs and meat) in rural and urban area and as a source of income, especially to small holder farmers. Mean number of egg production was higher for exotic breed than local chicken ecotypes. Higher egg production and better reproductive life span is obtained from exotic chickens than local ones. Moreover, overall survival rate of exotic and crossbred chickens are found comparable to local chicken. Therefore, introducing Bovans Brown chickens having better productive and reproductive performance is important to enhance productivity. Non-genetic factors should also be considered to improve the performance of existing local chicken population. But, feed shortage, disease and other critical gaps that need to be filled by the institutions of research and development to improve the productive performance of exotic chicken breed in Ethiopia.

This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Agrarian Studies, language: English, abstract: The study was conducted in Jimma zone of three Agro-ecology in six-selected farmer's kebele starting from March to June 2017 with the aim to phenotypic ally characterize selected indigenous chicken, identify poultry management and breeding practices in three agro-ecologies of Jimma Zone. A survey was carried out on 180 randomly selected respondent as well as 555 heads of native chickens, (445 females and 105 males) for qualitative and quantitative trait measurements. In Ethiopia, the agricultural sector is a corner stone of the economic and social life of the people. The livestock sector in Ethiopia contributes 12% and 33% of the total and agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively, and provides livelihood for 65% of the population. The sector also accounts for 12-15% of the total export earnings. These livestock genetic resources are important or vital to development of the economic, social and environmental of the one country. The diverse agro-ecology and agronomic practice prevailing in the country together with the huge population of livestock in general and poultry in particular, could be a promising attribute to boost up the sector and increase its contribution to the total agricultural output as well as to improve the living standards of the poor livestock keepers. Poultry production, as one segment of livestock production, has a peculiar privilege to contribute to the sector. This is mainly due to their small size and fast reproduction compared to most other livestock and its well fitness with the concept of small-scale agricultural development. Moreover, it goes eco-friendly and does not compete for scarce land rest. The majority of indigenous chickens in the tropics are maintained under village chicken production systems. These production systems are typically characterized by low input and low output systems, mainly in terms of egg and meat p

This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poultry sector continues to grow and industrialize in many parts of the world. An increasing human population, greater purchasing power and urbanization have been strong drivers of growth. A clear division is developing between industrialized production systems of large and medium size feeding into integrated value chains, and extensive production systems supporting livelihoods and supplying local or niche markets. The primary role of the former is to supply cheap and safe food to populations often distant from the source of supply, while the latter acts as a livelihood safety net, often as part of a diverse portfolio of income sources. Understanding how poultry production systems and value chains work is essential in order to develop a countryโ€™s poultry sector sustainably. This review for Tanzania is part of a series of Livestock Country Reviews developed by FAO's Animal Production and Health Division (AGA). The reviews aim to support sustainable and effective development interventions and policy recommendations and contribute to informed decision-making and investments in the poultry sector by: (i) providing information and data about national poultry supply chains (with a special focus on poultry production); (ii) analysing strengths, weaknesses and prospects along the supply chain; and (iii) identifying opportunities for poultry sector development.

Book Exotic Layer Breeders Reproductive Performance in the Tropics

Download or read book Exotic Layer Breeders Reproductive Performance in the Tropics written by Simeon Olawumi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poultry industry in the Tropics, and Nigeria in particular is bedeviled with low productivity due to unfavourable rearing environment, coupled with the inability of exotic breeds to adapt to the prevailing hot weather conditions.Worse still, the indigenous chickens are slow growers and poor egg producers because of their broody nature. This book, therefore, provides valuable information on the performance of two breeds of exotic layer breeders reared for the production of commercial day-old chicks. They were Barred Plymouth Rock and White Plymouth Rock breeder hens.Barred Plymouth Rock birds were good and superior to White Plymouth Rock breeders in hatchability, survivability and egg quality traits. The former appeared hardy, heat tolerant, productive and adaptable to humid conditions. For increased production of animal products therefore, Barred Plymouth Rock genotype could be used in tropically-oriented breeding programme to improve and upgrade the genetic potential of our indigenous chickens. These findings should be especially useful to Poultry Breeders and Research Institutes or anyone else who may be interested in the development of a breed of chicken suitable for Tropical re

Book Laying Performance of Nigerian and Exotic Chickens

Download or read book Laying Performance of Nigerian and Exotic Chickens written by Brilliant Agaviezor and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigeria local chicken has several important features like adaptation to the local environment, broodiness, desired pigmentation and taste. It constitutes about 92% of the total poultry population in Nigeria which is estimated to be 102.832 million. There is considerable scope for the development of stocks that are better able to survive under the prevailing conditions and with the ability to produce increased quantities of eggs. Considering the problems of lack of suitable stock, cross breeding and upgrading involving indigenous chicken with standard exotic breeds has been recommended to improve the quality of stocks suitable for rural condition. In a bid to seek solution to the problems resulting from importation of exotic poultry breeds to our economy and the poor performance of our local chicken, this study was directed at crossing the exotic poultry breeds that are available in the country with the local chicken to produce crosses having important economic traits of both parents which will serve as a foundation stock in the country.

Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Book Village Chicken Production Systems in Rural Africa

Download or read book Village Chicken Production Systems in Rural Africa written by Aichi J. Kitalyi and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The poultry production systems of Africa are mainly based on the scavenging indigenous chickens found in virtually all villages and households in rural Africa. These systems are characterized by low output per bird. Nevertheless, over 70 percent of the poultry products and 20 percent of animal protein intake in most African countries come from this sector. Therefore, increased rural poultry production would result in a positive impact on household food security both in increased dietary intake and in income generation. ... This study coincided with the World Food Summit, held at FAO, Rome, from 13 to 17 November 1996, where delegations committed their governments and civil society to a global attack on food insecurity and poverty. Poultry, like other short-cycle animal stock, is viewed by the FAO Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) as a crucial element in the struggle for sustained food production and poverty alleviation. The guidelines provided in this study are particularly pertinent to those countries participating in the SPFS where village chicken production will have a substantial impact on increased household food security and gender equity."--Foreword.
