Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumption of Commercial Fertilizers and Primary Plant Nutrients in the United States: Year Ended June 30, 1957 Unlike the year 1955-56 when consumption of fertilizers in most of the regions was lower than-in 1954-55, consumption in 1956-57 was higher than in 1955-56 in all but a few regions. In the few exceptions where consumption was lower, the amount of decrease was usually not as great as occurred the previous year. Consumption of mixtures in the South Central region has continued to decrease which was offset, in part, by a higher use of materials. Only in the Pacific region has consumption of both classes increased and in the South Atlantic region, decreased in the two years, respectively. Book Commercial Fertilizers

Download or read book Commercial Fertilizers written by H. J. Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Fertilizers: Report for 1955 The term commercial fertilizers, -as used in the Connecticut fertilizer statute, includes any and every substance imported, manufactured, pre pared or sold for fertilizing or manuring or soil amendment purposes, ex cept barnyard manure and stable manure which have not been artificially treated or manipulated, marl and lime. An amendment of the law in 1949 permitted fertilizers to be labelled with guaranties of elements other than nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but did not change the requirement that mixed fertilizers must contain at least per cent of nitrogen, and l per cent of either phosphoric acid or potash, for guaranties of these elements to be made. Phosphorus must be declared as available phosphoric acid (except in the case of bone, tankage and other natural organic materials, where total phosphoric acid is guar anteed), and potassium as water-soluble potash; all other elements must be guaranteed in terms of percentages of the elements, not as oxides or salts. A registration fee of payable annually, is charged for each element guaranteed in each brand of fertilizer; there. Is also a six-cent tonnage tax, payable semiannually. While manufacturers usually register their own fertilizers, if a retailer sells a fertilizer manufactured by an out of state firm, and that firm re fuses to register, under the law the retailer ls responsible for registration fees and tonnage taxes. The retailer, therefore, should assure himself that the requirements of the law have been met by the manufacturers of the brands which he handles, or himself be prepared to meet all these requirements. The law exempts from registration, and from other requirements, only: (1) fertilizers passing through the State in transit; (2) fertilizers and fer tilizer materials shipped to regular fertilizer factories to be used for manufacturing purposes; and (3) fertilizers and fertilizer chemicals sold to The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station for experimental purposes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Green Manure Crops in Southern California Inthe execution of this experiment, the tract of land used was divided into seventeen plots, each 20 feet Wide by 218 feet long, containing approximately one-tenth of an acre. These were numbered consecutively 1 to 17. The plan of the experiment was to grow differ ent green-manure crops on these plots during the winter months. During the summer following, certain indicator crops, such as corn and potatoes, were to be grown in solid blocks crossing the plots and serve by their growth and yield to demonstrate the comparative value of the different treatments applied to the plots. The plots indicated by the Odd numbers have all had some variety Of legume grown on them each winter and turned under as a green manure in the spring. The plots of even numbers have had non leguminous plants grown and turned under. Certain Of these non legume plots were fertilized with commercial nitrogenous materials during the growth of the indicator crop, thus furnishing some means of comparing the value Of nitrogen from the leguminous manure crop with known quantities of nitrogen from commercial fertilizer.
