Book Weins Commercial Building

Download or read book Weins Commercial Building written by Mark A. White and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Weins Commercial Building is a historic building located in Independence, Iowa, United States. The central business district developed in Independence on the east side of the Wapsipinicon River along First Avenue. Fires in 1873 and 1874 destroyed the wooden buildings that were originally built there. They were replaced by brick and stone buildings, and the wooden sheds that accompanied the commercial buildings were eliminated. This two-story brick Romanesque Revival style building was part of a second wave of new commercial construction in Independence, this time away from First Avenue. Built in 1892, it features patterned brick work ornamentation, round-arch windows, and rusticated limestone and brick courses that emphasize the divisions of the interior. Most of the commercial buildings in Independence were built in the Italianate style, so the use of the Romanesque Revival for this building makes it unique. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997."--Wikipedia, November 17, 2022.

This two-story brick Italianate style building was one of the new buildings constructed in 1874. Book Grand Avenue Historic Commercial District

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grand Avenue Historic Commercial District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Spencer, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 57 resources, including 39 contributing buildings, and 18 noncontributing buildings. The district covers most of the city's central business district, mainly along Grand Avenue, but on some of the intersecting streets as well. In addition to commercial buildings, the district also includes the post office, a theater, and a fraternal lodge. The commercial Romanesque Revival and Neoclassical styles are dominant. The period of significance begins in 1913 when a building boom of more "modern" construction began and ends in 1935. A fire started by fireworks destroyed nearly two full blocks, and affected 70 businesses and professional offices. The architects who designed the new buildings went for a unified approach utilizing a Spanish/Mission influence. The Iowa Legislature passed a law banning the sale of fireworks throughout the state." --Wikipedia, March 15, 2023.

Book Cherokee Commercial Historic District

Download or read book Cherokee Commercial Historic District written by James Edward Jacobsen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cherokee Commercial Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Cherokee, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. At the time of its nomination it contained 70 resources, which included 50 contributing buildings and 20 non-contributing buildings. The historic district covers most of the city's central business district. Most of the buildings are two and three stories tall, and built of brick. There are two frame buildings from the city's earliest years. Cherokee is somewhat unusual in that it did not have a devastating fire in its history, therefore the downtown area was able to grow incrementally. Unlike many county seats, it does not have a focal point such as a centrally located courthouse square. The Cherokee County Courthouse was built on a hill to the west of the downtown area. The district is almost completely made up of commercial buildings. Churches, residential, and civic buildings are either on the periphery or well outside of the downtown proper. The upper floors of the buildings generally house professional offices. Both the Illinois Central Railroad Depot (1896), and the Baggage Terminal (1896) are contributing properties. The period of significance is from 1867 to 1955, and the buildings are constructed during that time frame. The commercial Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Neoclassical, and Art Deco/Moderne Style are dominant. Prominent architects who have buildings in the district include Josselyn & Taylor (Lewis Hotel; 1899), Warren Wilfred Beach (Hawley Allison Block; c. 1910), and William Beuttler and Ralph Arnold (Sachse, Bunn & Company Block; 1920)." --Wikipedia, 03 March 2023.

The two-and three-story structure of locally quarried limestone was completed around 1855 by C. Albertus. A unique feature of the building are the pointed arch doorways and windows, which have not been found on similar commercial buildings in Iowa. The building was initially used for a combination of commercial and residential use. Clothing and grocery stores were located on the first floor of the southern three-story block. By 1886 the northern two-story block was all residential, and by 1894 the whole building had gone residential. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 26, 1979. In 1984 it was listed as a contributing property in the Front Street (River Park Drive) Historic District."--Wikipedia, 11 April 2023.
