This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial and Industrial Geography a d104 Book for Schools, Colleges, and Private Reference The rapid expansion of the foreign trade and the increasing domestic commerce of the United States have made it necessary for the business man to inform himself as to the kind, quantity and value of the various natural and manufactured products that are bought and sold in the markets of the world. It is also desirable for him to know why certain countries have controlled certain lines of trade in the past and whether present conditions are such that he may compete successfully in the world's neutral markets. The author is daily called upon to answer questions coming from students, teachers and business men bearing upon such topics touching the industry and commerce of the world. In the preparation of this book it is assumed that the student already has a fair knowledge of political and physical geography. Commodities are first treated separately following the classification given in the United States Government reports. The processes of manufacture of some of the more important articles are incidentally given in order to aid in understanding any peculiarities in them affecting the course of trade. The countries in each continent are next considered in the order of their importance to the trade of the United States. The physical and other conditions affecting trade are also considered as well as the weights and measures, the currency, and the languages in use in each country. Trade routes, government revenues, aids to commerce, instruments of exchange, and the metric system, and their effect upon commerce are treated in separate chapters. Statistics are used only to the extent necessary to show the relative importance of the various commodities and different countries engaged in the world's trade. For United States imports and exports those of the fiscal years ending June 30 are given, as these are the only periods for which complete statistics are published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commercial Geography: For Academies, High Schools, and Business Colleges A large proportion of boys in schools expect to enter business life. Comparatively few have opportunity for the extended training given by a college course, and must depend upon the academy, the high school, or the commercial school for their preparation. The problem is to give boys, having a limited time at their command, the training and knowledge that will be of the greatest practical value in a commercial life. A good knowledge of what are known as fundamental branches is necessary; but, beyond these, it has been difficult to decide what branches of instruction will prove of greatest practical service. Political economy, civics, physics, chemistry, history, and the modern languages are helpful toward training the mind; but, if the languages be excepted, the branches named do not directly give the practical results that are so much needed. If some facts bearing upon the active commercial questions of the day could be brought within the scope of a text-book, it would seem to supply a want. Among these questions are, the routes and growth of commerce, - the production - centres and the markets of the world, - waterways and railways, and the increase of commerce as related to the growth of cities. The staple articles of commerce, their relative value and importance, would also deserve attention. With a view of partly, at least, fulfilling this, object, I have prepared this textbook of Commercial Geography. The need of such a book has been felt in my own school work, and it is hoped that other teachers may find it useful in giving pupils some ideas of the magnitude of the world's production, in showing the interdependence of nations for the necessities as well as the luxuries of life; and in presenting many facts of practical value relating to commerce. While Commercial Geography deals mainly with the interchange of commercial products, it is also essential that the student should know something about the countries and localities where the raw materials are found, how the latter are obtained, what the processes of manufacture are, how interchange is effected, and what ratio home consumption bears to export. All these are important questions, that must be studied if practically useful knowledge is to be assimilated. Lakes, but, since the navigation of the St. Lawrence River has been improved, with all the rest of the world. In the matter of railroad advantages no other city surpasses Chicago. For these reasons the flour which is made there is easily marketed. Kansas. Kansas is profiting much from the westward movement of wheat raising and manufacturing. Between 1900 and 1905 its milling industry almost doubled, and in the latter year ranked second among the industries of the state in the value of its product. The mills are not concentrated in any one city or in any one part of the state, but there are a number of important centers, such as Atchison, Leavenworth, Topeka, and Wichita. Missouri. Missouri is also becoming an important flour-milling state, having come up from sixth place in 1900 to third place in 1905. Here, too, flour milling is the second industry in importance, coming next to slaughtering and meat packing. St. Louis, its chief city, has long been recognized as a center of trade because of its position on the Mississippi, and to-day its railway facilities are even greater than the advantages offered by that great waterway. Missouri's success illustrates the fact that it is cheaper to manufacture wheat in or near the wheat belt, and to send the flour, rather than the raw product, to market. Marketing The business of marketing the products manufactured from wheat, such as flour and stock feed, the former being the more important, has come to be a large one, and is greatly helped by our rapid and cheap transportation system. There was a time when each state produced nearly enough wheat to feed its own population; but through division of labor and specialization, various industries have come to be centered in the places best suited to...

Book Industrial Commercial Geography of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Commercial Geography of the United States Classic Reprint written by Levi Clyde Rusmisel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial-Commercial Geography of the United States This book is not a technical treatise upon the industries discussed, but simply an attempt to describe, in a clear and simple way. some of the every-day features, as well as some of the unusual things, that belong to these industries. I have attempted to keep constantly in view the human elements of the stories. At the same time, the leading thought has been to emphasize the importance of these activities, as carried on in the United States. The student is free to investigate their existence in other countries should he desire to do so. The nations that control the world arc those which lead industrially, for this is an industrial age. Perhaps ninety per cent, of our pupils will enter some form of industrial life, as the whole world is united by a network of commerce and industry. The study of the great industries is the surest way to obtain a practical knowledge of any country. Commercial Geography is a study of the centralization of industry, and has become one of the most essential branches in our schools. The most valuable stenographer is not simply the most speedy shorthand writer, but the one who can, by reason of her general knowledge, make the most intelligent and accurate transcript with reasonable speed. The best-salaried accountant is not alone the finest penman or most rapid calculator, but the one who is most familiar with the sources of supply, process of manufacture, and cost of the common commodities with which he has to reckon. Likewise, the most successful business man is not the narrow-minded tradesman, but the broad-gauged, calculating man of affairs, whose knowledge of the world's great industries gives him power to cope with the problems of business life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Geography The material is arranged so that it shall be practical from the point of view of either the teacher or the candidate doing private study. The main part of the text is concerned definitely with the geographical aspects of trade, while the statistics and other facts are assembled in a separate reference-section. The geography is intended to present to the student ideas about the methods of approaching the subject of commerce; it is something meant to be read for reading's sake, and not primarily to be 'learnt' and then, perhaps, 'tested' iri class. Separate topios are divided into rather short chapters to form lesson units as desired, and groups of these chapters, based on strictly geographical regions, have their own sets of sketch-maps and numerous exercises, written and oral. The maps provided are not intended. To replace those found in most school-atlases, to which reference will constantly have to be made, especially in doing the notebook work suggested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Commerce and Industry You have long since learned that the sur land and water face of the earth is composed of land and water and that there is practically three times as much water as land. Probably you have also learned that the land and water are very unequally distributed, the greater part of the land lying north of the Equator and the greater part of the water lying south of it; but you may not have considered the relations which these condi tions sustain to human life, occupations and commerce. Unequal distm_ Of the fourteen hundred million people liv Ing upon the earth about one-half live upon Bunon 0f FE less than one-seventh of its surface. The principal causes for this unequal distribution of life are climate and the condition of the earth's surface. Animals are compelled to live in the regions that produce their food. Man only can live away from the sources of his food supply, because he alone has devised means for transporting what he needs to any locality in which he desires to dwell. Some animals feed upon plants, and some upon other animals. Those animals that furnish food for others, themselves feed upon plants; therefore the animal life of a locality is determined by its plant life, and even man finds it to his advantage to dwell in those portions of the earth where his supply of food is abundant and easily obtained. The most important features of climate are temper climate ature and rainfall. As these are, so are the vegeta tion, animal life and people. In general, the earth is divided climatically into the tropical, temperate and polar regions. The tropical regions are characterized by high temperatures, and in some localities an abundance of rainfall, and in others almost an entire absence of rainfall. Where there is an abundance of rainfall we find the most luxuriant vegetation. The regions best illustrating these condi tions of life are found in the valleys of the Amazon and Kongo Rivers. In the forests of the Amazon the trees grow to an enormous size, and twining and climbing plants and undergrowth form thickets so dense that it is impossible to penetrate them. Here also are myriads of insects of the most gorgeous hues and birds of brilliant plumage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial Geography: An Intermediate Text-Book The requirements of modern geographical method have been kept carefully in view, and an attempt has been made to harmonise regional treatment with the necessary consideration of political units. Questions, which have been added at the end of each chapter, should provide a useful basis for revision and many others of a similar nature will occur to the teacher. The free introduction of maps and diagrams is not intended to supersede the atlas, which should be always by the student's side and he should be encouraged to trace tendencies towards change by constant reference to the various Statistical Abstracts issued by the Board of Trade. Such exercises make no inordinate demand upon either time or ability, and are of the utmost value in conjunction with a rational text-book from the educative point of view.
