Book New England Plantations Commerce and Slavery

Download or read book New England Plantations Commerce and Slavery written by Robert A. Geake and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first settlements within New England, the developing colonies of British North America became inextricably linked to slavery. The region supplied critical goods to the sugar plantations established by British planters in the West Indies. The northern colonies established their own slave plantations to supply the growing demand for goods that led to unparalleled growth in commerce and to the subsequent involvement in the triangle trade. As these northern plantations diminished at the close of the eighteenth century, the rise of textile manufacturing continued to tie the region to slavery. Historian Robert A. Geake explores the familial and economic ties that bound New England and the South into the Civil War.

Book Consumerism and the Emergence of the Middle Class in Colonial America

Download or read book Consumerism and the Emergence of the Middle Class in Colonial America written by Christina J. Hodge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study presents compelling evidence for a revolutionary idea: that to understand the historical entrenchment of gentility in America, we must understand its creation among non-elite people: colonial middling sorts who laid the groundwork for the later American middle class. Focusing on the daily life of Widow Elizabeth Pratt, a shopkeeper from early eighteenth-century Newport, Rhode Island, Christina J. Hodge uses material remains as a means of reconstructing not only how Mrs Pratt lived, but also how these objects reflect shifting class and gender relationships in this period. Challenging the 'emulation thesis', a common assumption that wealthy elites led fashion and culture change while middling sorts only followed, Hodge shows how middling consumers were in fact discerning cultural leaders, adopting genteel material practices early and aggressively. By focusing on the rise and emergence of the middle class, this book brings new insights into the evolution of consumerism, class, and identity in colonial America.

Book George Berkeley

Download or read book George Berkeley written by Tom Jones and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers a comprehensive account of the life and thought of the major Irish philosopher of the Enlightenment. Building on a study of Berkeley's better known early life and work as an immaterialist philosopher in Trinity College, Dublin the book explores connections between Berkeley's metaphysics and every aspect of his career. Touring Italy as a chaplain and tutor, campaigning for and travelling to Rhode Island to establish a university on Bermuda, working as a bishop in rural Ireland, writing on Christian apologetics, economic stimulus, and the philosophical implications of drinking tar-water - all of these activities are occasions for Berkeley to practice philosophy. In his family life, his daily routines, his educational projects, this book discovers a thinker motivated by finding the means to bring human wills into conformity with God's will, and defending laws, rules, order and hierarchy to do so. This book presents research into the institutional history of schools, universities, societies and the church, studies the neglected figures - particularly women - whose presence in Berkeley's life was significant, and describes his relationships with social groups other than white Protestants in order to revise our understanding of a man who was at once a radical metaphysician, a missionary Protestant, a conservative social reformer, and a person of intense religious commitment. In telling his story, the book expands our understanding of the relationship between canonical early modern philosophy, the eighteenth-century Church, and the history of educational and social improvement"--
